View Full Version : Any plans to release CoD without DRM?

So CoD is apparently dead now (I guess I'm quite late to the party...) and I've just started to look into it. I was going to buy it (despite some of the things I've heard about it), but then I found out it used Steamworks DRM. Does anyone know if there are any plans to release a DRM-free (or less-DRM-full) version of CoD at some point? If it was released on GoG or even D2D I'd likely pick it up pretty quickly (depending on the price, of course). I just don't see any reason to pay $20 or so for a game which is apparently not that great and uses Steamworks DRM.
Also, while I'm here - how come CoD is no longer supported, yet Il-2 1946 is still being patched more than a decade on? I'm looking forward to the 4.12 patch for it, but I'm confused about why CoD will have no more patches after only 1.11. Different devs? Different publisher? Same everything, but the game sucks so bad that they've dropped it and ran?

presumably you are aware of the latest community patch and the plans for further development of Clod..
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=39034
You are right, this is the official forum of Cliffs of Dover.
SlipBall linked to a different website of a different Second World War flightsim currently being developed (probably not released before end of 2014).
To my knowledge, there is no planning to make Cliffs of Dover run without Steam. Personally, I am a friend of the Steam plattform, but this is another topic.
Thanks to the guys of Team Fusion who have published an amazing first version of their community patch (see the thread in this forum (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=39034) or official Team Fusion forum (http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=91)) that fixes a lot of technical limitations of the game and adds great new content, I regard Cliffs of Dover as quite alive. In addition there is an enthusiastic online community on popular servers like ATAG or SOW with up to 100 pilots flying simultaneously.
Especially, if you like flying online with and against human pilots in a very realistic flight simulation and have a capable computer at home, I strongly recommend Cliffs of Dover.
Just try it out - for under $10 not much to think about.

DUI is correct!
Clod is not dead at all. Its just a huge secret! Its so good we want it all to ourselves!
Team Fusion has made a mod / community patch! - its very good! Plenty of servers with life on every night, ATAG and Storm of War. Also Ravenhost for those that dont like full realism settings. Something for everyone! There are also online wars between units too! But like I said, we dont want to many people to join our paradise because it will ruin it! :-P
The game itself is 1/3rd of the original cost! - just buy it!

I was aware of the ATAG mod, but I didn't realise there was a community patch. I didn't realise the community was still going to support this - that's very good news indeed!

Damn, I hope they will consider it later. I prefer to not have games which require Steam (unless they're really cheap), since I tend to move around a lot and am without internet for long stretches (you can only use Steam offline mode for 30 days after your last online log in). Plus, if anything ever happens to Steam (or they randomly ban my account - not likely, I know), I'd just rather have the game for myself, rather than having to rely on Steam working.
Just try it out - for under $10 not much to think about.
Where can I get it for under $10? I looked around, but the lowest I found was $14. I know that I missed out on a lot of sales where it was selling for $5 or so :( Where is the cheapest place to get it currently? I'm definitely going to buy it, now that I know the community is going to support it :)

Uh...it costs $49.99 USD on Steam (I'm in Australia, so it's probably just the usual terrible regional pricing we get - charging us in USD, but still raising the price anyway). But I checked on the US Steam and it doesn't even seem to have CoD on there
Is there anywhere else that I can get it cheap?

Dead? Not at all. More like finally playable! Community is releasing patches that rock. Pick it up now if you have a decent rig

I just sent you a private message. Maybe also for an Australian a way to get Cliffs of Dover a bit cheaper. :)

To answer the rest of your questions, '46 is still being "officially" worked on, because the support of this title had been outsourced to Team Daidalos, on official subcontractor for the job one might say. The original developers switched to next project (CoD) few years ago, but TD is still in the business and the old deal seems to be working just fine (upcoming patch 4.12 being the best example here).
Sadly, the same did not happen after official CoD support had been dropped last year, so we must rely on private, unofficial support attempts by modding community gathered around ATAG (similar case to submarine enthusiasts and their Silent Hunter franchise). So far so good, the latest community patch solved many of the game's issues and I can only hope that lack of access to source code will not become a "showstopper" for ambitious modders anytime soon.
Cheers.

LOL! Most CloD "haters/naysayers" are camping there, will lynch him. :)

If believed that is "not great", better dont buy.
Use this "20$" to buy RoF scarf or planes, "Lions/Eagles" for War Thunder or save to buy Il-2 BoS - "The Redemption". ;)
And, if are only a "offliner", I think that is better dont buy - because CloD IA issues - stay with the great Il-2 1946 content until Il-2 BoS - "The Redemption" arrive.
But, if are a "onliner", look at weekend sales of Gremangaming, Getgamesgo, eventually CloD are sold for U$ 5~10 - maybe chance your opnion about "no so great game".
BTW - In SimHQ are a workaround to use CloD (offline) without Steam.

Jason from 777 has said that they have nothing to do with CLOD. They don't have access to the code base and they don't have the rights to it.
Contacting 1C is the only avenue people should pursue if they want CLOD to be DRM free. But I very much doubt that 1C will do anything.

50 Dollars!!! Pfffffffff....
Get some one not in Oz to gift you it on steam, then send them the 10 dollars or what ever the exchange rate is via paypal...
Problem solved... ;)

There is no one left here that could answer the questions asked by him "plans to release a DRM-free"...he has a better shot over there with their access to the 1C front office

B6 is still here. Whether he would answer is another matter. I wouldn't bother going to il2 net for anything to do with CoD, as its a totally different game being developed by a different company.
Go to ATAG, install the TF patch, and enjoy.

Well, so far I've just got no responses from the people there. I wasn't really looking forward to posting there, though - I don't know how I feel about BoS, given that 1-C dropped support for it so that the devs could "force" people over to BoS. I figured that if I didn't say something along those lines, I wouldn't get lynched, haha. But maybe I still will, if they hate CoD that much.

I don't really like RoF, WT is ok as a very basic (modelling-wise) "sim" (it's really a game, though) and as I said, I currently don't like the idea of BoS because CoD was abandoned. Plus, every combat sim I've played has had unrealistically awesome Russian aircraft and unrealistically mediocre German aircraft at the start, until people complain enough that it gets patched. If they follow this tradition, but also abandon BoS early, the Russians will always win  (I think I'm only half serious about that...)

Awesome! I'll look that up now. I'm usually able to play (often online too), but it would be nice to know that I could keep playing it after 30 days of no internet. Thanks :)

Well, I post over at the BoS forums occasionally and check em at least once a day, I don't see a lot of anger at CloD or it's fans, they are just very clear (the moderators) that the usual pissing and moaning won't be put up with.
Frankly, I would not let the 1C/777 situation taint your view of the product they make, who knows, maybe it will end up being really good and then you will have missed out on it.
Anyway, everyone has personal feelings about the whole thing that seem to run pretty deep, I personally think there are so few good flight sims that it never hurts to just say screw it and enjoy them all for what they are :)
Well, except War Thunder, I don't do F2P MMO's :p

So a AI bombing? I am pretty sure that most sims (and even non-sims) can do that.
Perhaps I missed something specific? If so, please tell me what I am supposed to be seeing.
Please note, not trying to be snide or whatever, I am actually curious.

Everyone is different Mike and see thing's that they like or dislike. There would be no point of me to explain what would be cool to me. :) but I am looking forward to the new game and will certainly give it a try
Cool to me in this video is the nicely built airfield with the planes, cars and buildings, the graphic and sound in general, the beautiful and "unexpected" bomb explosions and the physic and damage model (though one of the trucks is flying quite some distance ;) ).

Very kind of you, I send to you the mission...it will play differently on the final game though. If you want to take off make a left and follow the service road to the wind sock
Mission downloaded - surely be tested out in the next days! Thanks!
