Can anyone help this noob pilot?

I am flying in full simulation configuration. I'm using an X360 game pad with Xpadder activated and my keyboard.

Plane: Spitfire MkIIa

Enemy: He-111

Location out in the channel ;)

So, I line up behind this guy (AI) and I light up his engines but only one goes out. I destroy half his rudder and wing tips to kill his lift at high altitude. We were at 10K'ish? It works he slowly descends engine is still smoking and I can see some airframe under the skin. I kill all of his gunners. What they hell am I doing wrong? He will not burst into flames. I emptied my guns on him too. Should I just energy fight the big bombers and kill the pilots? I tried cutting his wings off too but it's a lot harder to do than I thought. Oh well any help will be apreciated!

Attack from above/below instead of straight from the rear. It gives you a bigger target to shoot at, and that means more bullets will hit it = hopefully more damage.

The machine guns on British aircraft struggle to kill fighters, never mind bombers. With both 109s and 111s, unless you are good enough to deliberately kill the pilot, your aim is to cause enough damage to stop them getting home then move on to the next target - you will get your kill confirmation later. I find the most efficient attack on a LW bomber is a fast raking attack from 4 o/c or 8 o/c targeting the cockpit area as even if you miss the pilot you will probably damage the engine. The *safest* attack is high 10 o/c or 2 o/c which will still have a good chance of hitting cockpit and engine but is harder to do as you are closing faster and need to be better at deflection shooting. Sometimes you can also get good results diving under the tail and then coming up an shooting ahead of his nose and raking him from nose to tail; I have killed the pilot a few times that way.

This is not war thunder the planes dont go BOOM. You killed him. If he was going down on one engine he would very soon hit the ground and you would see if you followed. More real.

Or you could ram him if you really want a BOOM ;)

Not looking for boom just some fire and a very steep descent =o)

Or you could ram him if you really want a BOOM ;)

But notice if you collide in the target with speed greater than his,
you go "BOOM", and the target remains intact. CloD world. ;)

So, better avoid "Taran".

BTW - "Taran" after BoB

On 7 October 1940, Pilot Officer Ken W. Mackenzie of No. 501 Squadron RAF used his Hawker Hurricane to destroy a Messerschmitt Bf 109. His Combat Report read, "I attacked the three nearest machines in vic formation from beneath and a fourth enemy aircraft doing rear-guard flew across the line of fire and he developed a leak in the glycol tank... I emptied the rest of my ammunition into him from 200 yards but he still flew on and down to 80, to 100 feet off the sea. I flew around him and signalled him to go down, which had no result. I therefore attempted to ram his tail with my undercarriage but it reduced my speed too low to hit him. So flying alongside I dipped my starboard wing-tip onto his port tail plane. The tail plane came off and I lost the tip of my starboard wing. The enemy aircraft spun into the sea and partially sank...".[8][B]

I finally made something turn into a flamming ball of metal!!!! I killed a Beaufighter with my Bf-110. I closed into 150yd's lit him up with a 2-sec burst of my machine guns then I closed it 'nut-to-butt' and hit him with another 2 seconds of 20mm death kisses. I damn near took off his wing. The gunner bailed but the pilot went down with his plane in a spectacular streak of fire and then ending with the 'BOOM!':grin::grin:

Bombers are are very tough, especially when attacked from the rear, where all bullets hit armoured areas or bounce off the metal skin.
As others have said, attack from a 90 degree angle and the bullets will penetrate the engines and wings more easily.

This guy needs to quit smoking LOL

Well I'm now a triple ACE this being my 15th full kill. I have a few halfs and a few damaged A/C under my belt. I've been shot down once and forced landed 3 times. I must have hit something just right because a 0.5 sec burst did this.

He must have REALLY wanted that kill! Probably got fed up with all the shoulder shooting and kill-stealing! ;)
