View Full Version : Graphics Card Upgrade

Hi,

My system is an AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core 2.2ghz & just upgraded from Windows XP to 7 64bit, & oh joy - can fly around london without the game freezing despite only having 3 gb of RAM.

However, there are little square patches of red on the screen. I assume this is because my system is now running Direct X 11 & my graphics card, being a GEForce Nvidia 9800 GT (1gb) which only supports Direct X 10.

I'm looking to puchase an GEForce Nvidia GT610 which is a 2gb ddr3 memory card as they support direct x 11 & also as they are on offer at the moment from a localshop - don't want to spend a lot on a graphic card at present as just bought Windows 7, thought not at the retail price.

Has any one got this card & how are they finding it on CoD? In the past the graphics cards I've bought have an on board fan, whereas this hasn't. I've plenty of space in my base & have 2 fans on the front of the case sucking in fresh air & obviously a large fan on the rear to exhaust hot air, so despite what the manufactuers say, is there an overheat issue?

Posted this in this forum as well as the technical forum as not sure how many people just look at this forum & only look at the technical forum for assistance if they have problems.

Hi mate, personally I think that card will struggle to run CLOD, if your on a tight budget you may have more success with a GeForce GTX550Ti but even this card isn't ideal.

thanks for the advice Tree.

Chosing a graphics card is a nightmare - still undecided which to go for. I must admit I do prefer Nvidia based graphics cards.

CloD is a DX10 game. The artifacts are caused by the epilepsy filter probably. Turn it off.

610 could be not faster than your card. Check detailed specs (like number of conveyors, data bus, etc.). I would recommend gtx560ti 2gb minimum, gtx660 or 670 as value for money or 680 as a top performer. ATI analogs would also do the job. 2BG+ vram should be good for the future game updates.

I use a 560 ti 1gb card (out of old pc) and it runs great on my new 3.8 ghz quad core system. I also have 16gb ddr 3 ram so dont know if this compensates for graphics not being latest one??

If you are on a tight budget 560(non Ti) will do, but you have slow CPU and CloD
is very dependant on processor power.
Maybe you should look for some phenom II (955, 965,..) or 960T if you can find them. I suppose your motherboard will support those CPUs.

I agree with the observations of the other posters in this thread.
However, note my system specs below... I cannot get CloD to run
useable with it.:(

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??????????????

got the same odd bits of graphics when not in CloD, but also when using desktop after coming out of CloD, but then they disapear.

Graphics on DCS A-10 simulator plays up also, ie. the ground has no details just a flat plain coloured patch that jumps between being ground & the plain patch - probably a compatability/confict problem.

Have the latest drivers for my Nvidia 9800GT after instaling Window 7 (64 bit), but I wonder if it's, as the box says, 'certified for windows vista' & 'compatable with windows 7'

Thanks for the advice on graphics cards guys - I'll let you know what I end up with, if I do get one, & let you know the outcome.

Going from 9800GT to GT610 is a HUGE downgrade. GT610 is couple of times slower than 9800GT. It has only 48 cuda cores and it is with 64 bit memory interface.
What is your display resolution? I guess that you have problem with drivers.
One year ago I played DCS A-10 with my old 4850 with only 512MB ram without any problems. I even played CloD, but with Effects set to LOW. With effects set to HIGH video card/driver crashed due lack of enough video memory.
My opinion is that with your current video card you can play CloD if you can solve the problem with drivers.

I would go for one of the top 5. Higher is better.
Get one with 2Gb or more of memory if you can although my GTX570 1.28Gb runs it quite well at High settings with the usual suspects turned down (bulidings, forest)

If you can stretch the budget the best bang for buck is the new 3GB 660TI

strange how my old 9800 card is better than the 610 seeing as it's 1gb smaller & using older memory.

Wish manufactuers would come up with a better system for numbering their cards!

Second figure usually tells card position in the product range. 1 < 8
1st figure tells only card generation/series. (Was reset after switching from 4 digits to 3 digits)
