I was thinking that it might be a nice feature that one could optionally use a view mode that automatically switches from aim mode (gazing through the sight) to free view (looking around) through a sort of override. This would be triggered for TrackIR users if the angle between "looking straight throug the sight" and the angle of sight that my head just has at this moment is above a certain threshold.

Or by pressing shortly twice or three times the coolie hat for those who use this method.

The transition should be of course smooth that is have a transition animation that is quick enough and moves the virtual head from the current aim mode head position to the free few head position for track ir users or just liberate the view for coolie hat users.

I also think it should be optional and not compulsory as an addition to the current availabe view management in case somebody really would not like that.

You could use some key macro software to achieve this I reckon

Only if I use coolie hat I'd say. But I use TrackIR. Also the current animation is awkward and does not correspond to what I have in mind.
