View Full Version : Is Anti Aliasing supposed to work after the new patch?

What the title says. It is not mentioned in the patch release notes, and it certainly doesn't work on my setup, but I've noticed reports in the forum that it does actually work
Also, I remember reading somewhere that we'd have AA with the new graphic engine.
If it does actually work, can someone please describe how they got it to work?
I've tried both in-game settings (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, none of them works), and nvidia driver settings.
I'm using the FXAA injector (or whatever it's called) to get post AA effect. With it turned off, I have zero AA, regardless of in-game / driver configuration.
Any ideas?

AA is pretty similar to the state of the sim before the patch. It has an effect but just on a few things while others (like wires) are not affected. I assume that is why there are so many different opinions on the topic out there. From my standpoint it is clearly broken since a lot of things are not affected by AA which really hinders image quality a lot.

Hmmm. It doesn't work for cockpit objects, and it doesn't work for external view objekts (aircrafts and antennas). I guess the new engine will not have AA either. Good to know.

That is not really true. AA does smooth some edges in the cockpit but not all by far.

I really hope proper implementation of AA and AF is a priority, especially for ATI users that have no real alternative except the FXAA injection. Better than nothing yes, but until the dreadful jaggies and hideous shimmering are addressed the sim will always be an ugly duckling IMO.

comapring pre patch - after patch it does. also im running 1440x900. so less AA is needed to achieve a soft effect.
As far as im concerned, im satisfied with the current AA inside te pit. but waht suits me, may not suit other people at all.

Jaggies are present at cockpit frame and around the targeting sight glass, although FXAA removes them mostly. Even if there is an AA effect, it is unnoticeable, except turning on AA in game does cause an FPS hit.
The question remains tho: how come we still do not have proper AA now that we have a new graphic engine?

As far as I know it was said some time ago, that AA will be added after the new graphics engine is working fine. So it probably will take some time.
Best regards,

I agree, I don't see any difference but i do get an FPS hit with AA on

It seems like it is working a bit better for me with an NVidia card but one of my mates is using ATI and he swears blind that when AA is set to 0 he is getting no jaggies and when he puts in on 8 the jaggies are there!
Some one else in one of the other threads also said this was the case for him. Seems to be ATI specific.

The NVIDIA beta drivers that just came out have FXAA and after I installed them the FXAA smoothed the jaggies for me at a little fps hit.
Others have reported the same sucess.
For me I only use FXAA, the AA option is application controlled in the nvidia panel and off in game.
There is a profile called WRC 2010 in the programs list of the nvidia panel, use that one.
Good luck!

They said before the patch that SLI and AA was still not working. That being said I have an Nvidia card also and the AA does work on the cockpit. This is without forcing anything in the driver or using FXAA. In game settings only....The FXAA works too but it makes text too blurry for me.

Thanks, I must have missed that. Anyhow, I do use FXAA from a dll that someguy had originally developed for use with ArmA II. It sure is better than nothing.
Unlike you, however, I have zero AA in cockpit (unless I use FXAA). Maybe something's amiss at my end. Not sure what it is tho.
But I have noticed something interesting. My performance with the patch has improved over time :confused::confused: That is, initially I had worse FPS and stutters and a couple of CTDs. But now (after maybe 2 hours of on and off flying), I have slightly higher FPS, hardly any stutters, and no CTDs (at least none over two hours yesterday evening on ATAG).
This game really baffles me :)

S!
My guess is that the performance improves because some things are already in the memory thus not needed to be loaded next time you fly. Just a guess..

You might be right. Although I have CoD on a ~500MB read/write SSD, caching does appear to be more important to performance in CoD than most other games.

Before the patch when I turn on the AA in game it would always say AA=2 in the config file. Even if I set it to 8x
Now when I change it in game the config file matches the in game setting. AA can now equal 0,1,2,3,4 in the conf.ini Or 0,1x,2x,4x,8x in the game menu
Hard for me to tell any difference between 1x and 8x though...
I still just turn it off and use FXAA injector by someguy
I still get disappearing wings on distant planes :(

Same here, unfortunately. :( I hope LOD issues are on the devs' fix list also.
I hate losing sight of the enemy aircraft just before the merge.

I'm getting decent AA and good image quality with Nvidia card 301.24 drivers, FXAA turned on, 4xMSAA and 2xSGSAA, Adaptive Vsync and Aniso 16x, done through Nvidia Inspector, and all AA, VSync etc turned off in the game Video Options.
