Question regarding DX 11.

For whatever reason my card is running DX 11. Should I find a driver for my MSI/ATI Radeon 4850 that runs DX 10?

When I upgraded my system to 64bit Windows, I grabbed the latest 64 bit graphics driver for my MSI card (from MSI's site) and I wasn't aware that it was DX 11. I'm getting more pronounced stutters. I had them before but they were subtler instead of really dramatic like they are now with the alpha. Could DX 11 be the issue since the alpha clearly states DX 10.... or was that only to delineate between DX 9 and DX 10?

I'll probably do it anyway and report back. If it is an issue, I wonder how many others having problems with the Alpha running DX 11?

No- DX11 is backwards compatible. If the game calls DX10 features, the card will only use DX10. It has the drivers and capability to run 11, but if the game doesn't call it it wont. Trying to downgrade might cause system problems, if the drivers even exist.

The only problem with DX10 only would be if you have a graphics card that can only handle DX9 as there is no DX9 support in the patch.

If you have DX10 card or DX11 card you are fine- you dont need to do anything, use the most up to date released drivers you can (usually from the ATI or NVidia website, go for full release, not beta ones).

You always have to look for the latest drivers at Nvidia/ATI website, MSI is a partner, they have drivers in theirs websites but its Nvidia/ATI who make new builds so as soon there a new public build its published in their website.

You should look for the version of your Os and the Bits when you are looking for a driver upgrade (DX9,DX10,DX11, are all included with the exception of XP which is DX9 only), for example Windows 7 - 64 Bits.

I'm having trouble finding just DX 10 video drivers.. LOL. I'll look on ATIs site for the latest relevent drivers. At this time I am running drivers from MSI's site and have no issues with other games/applications.

Thanks for the clarification Jimmy. I 'thought' that's how it worked, but wanted to be sure. DX 11 is backwards compatable. I was hoping to find a common error for those (as well as myself) still having stutters. C'est la vie.

Because there are no specific DX9/10/11 drivers. What API you have is mainly defined by the highest(!) DX-Version installed onto your PC (in your case DX11, as it´s shipped with W7). But, every DX Version is somewhat downwards compatible, if you have dx11 installed, you automatically have dx10.x installed, if you have dx9 installed, you have also dx6 installed (that one i´m sure of, as i didn´t have to install it, once i played a dx6 game).
But dx10 is not downwards compatible to dx9, that´s why you have to install it separately. The drivers only function is to act as an interface between the hardware and the software, itself has absolutely no control of the api used, because that´s the programmers job.
