View Full Version : Good news about crashes!

naryv, one of the developers, wrote at sukhoi.ru (http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=75699&p=1837024&viewfull=1#post1837024) that developers specifically addressed the issue of multi-engine aircraft crashes when flying in formation. 2-3 weeks ago I PMed BlackSix that this is the most fast way to reproduce online crashes. Then the devs reproduced and fixed it. Guys from ATAG tested it after the patch flying bombers in formation without crashes.
What does this mean?
This means that each individual type of crash has its own reasons and having received crash dump files of each individual crash developers will fix them one by one, and this is good news. But to fix crashes for your particular hardware and drivers developers must obtain crash dump files from your PC. If you do not send crash dumps you will crash more often than others eventually.
This is what this alpha-release was issued for.
Please take crash dumps from Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\cppcrash
and send them with a description to ishevchenko@1cpublishing.eu
together with log.txt which you can find in Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover (enable logging in conf.ini first by changing Log=0 to Log=1)
Please enable logging in your conf.ini (Log=1). If the game crashes, send us your log as well as any crash dump files created in the cppdump folder in the main game installation. Email everything to ishevchenko@1cpublishing.eu
So! Get testing. Get reporting. Make sure your logging is enabled, and send us your crashlogs!
Now, when the engine core is mostly rewritten and time for bug-fixing has come I hope we'll have new beta patches releases more often.
so the crash dump is enough ?
no need to give further informations about when and where ?

new beta patches releases more often.
i think the same thing... delay of 6 month for "wide" testing is too long...
we expect to the final patch in 6 month...
or if we have "friday beta-patch" we can participate to the exhaustiv test and not waiting an alpa patch as the final.

I hope this motivates them to fix a couple of crashes and release a 2nd alpha soon.
BTW. I had many crashes on Repka#3 server because server cache was not cleared during patching. Server side may also cause crashes.

Very true I'm thinking exactly the same thing, here's to hoping.
Oh yeah btw, i noticed (probably nothing) in my conf.ini Grass=3 normally off and on are 0 &1, wonder if this line might be a problem?

Thanks for the tip Ataros, it's nice to see something positive, and a few people who understand the term Beta.
As for bugs, here in the States our bug squashing time comes this November, unfortunately with so many of them overrunning Washington our job is very similar to 1C's.

With all respect, how long will that take? And, by implication, it will be our fault if the game will not work fine on all machines if we do not send crash dumps? After all that time you offer something like "cooperate or die" ? Sorry, IMO that's too easy and no real solution.
They should make it compatible and working flawless asap. That's it !

And the flip side of that coins is.. If you choose not to DL the alpha/beta patch, or choose to DL it but not send in your dump files, don't be surprised if your 'specific hardware error' does not get addressed (fixed) in the final patch.
There are so many different hardware and software OS, and driver combinations out there that it is unrealistic to expect 1C to account for them all while trying to developing cutting edge software.
In short, this is your chance to be part of the solution, you asked for it, now you got it, step up!

That will be key to this testing working, not only us sending in crash logs, but them turning around updates on a regular basis, weekly or bi-weekly...

They know it but it does not help them.
No one is obliged to help. Only those who want to may help. Others should not install alpha or beta anyway. There are plenty of other games to play till CloD is improved by those who want to help. It may take several years.
If Activision or EA have better developers they can try to produce a better WWII flightsim and make it profitable somehow. There are not many qualified developers in Russia unfortunately.
keep in mind there is 22 persons working on cod/bom ... much less than on angry birds

Thats an excellent point, as frustrated as we get with everything that goes on, we have to try and support these little companies to keep getting us the games we want, sims are not that big over here anymore, everyone wants to put out the next Call of Duty, so the most we can hope for are games like World of Warplanes... I dont want to live in a world like that so an Alpha of IL2 is better than what EA or Activision might publish... IMHO
So send in those crash reports... I will soon as I have one, but i havent yet, thank the sim gods! :)

You want the game to get fixed? Tell them what's wrong about it. That's what Ataros says and it's also the purpose of this testing patch.
But really tell them. Throwing hands up in the air and screaming "why won't it wooooork!", or saying "i don't care, just fix it" does not amount to telling. It amounts to expecting others to guess what you want and implement it. Not a very realistic expectation i might say.
Cheers ;)

Yea bombers seem fine. Which makes me very happy. But now I have a 109 that crashes after 20-30 minutes of flying.
I didn't have log=1 enabled but I do now. That so far is the only thing I can tell that is crashing.

Hopefully getting rid of CTD's will be a faster process this time. What can you expect with a new graphics engine rewrite? If that is what they have done.

Blackdog, everything is said and documented a hundred times in this board. A database has been created for their easy reference, and if that's not enough they should simply spend a weekend playing CloD on a customary PC. I'm convinced they are fully aware of the problems but until now they are not able to get those damn thing work w/o crashes. We waited 7 month for a "beta" patch that finally was an "alpha" patch of what ever, but take your time follow the 1.06.17582 bug thread (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31760) to see what I'm talking about.
For me it makes no sense to send anything anywhere as long as they have obviously no clue whats wrong with their code in general.
Cheers ;)

Well, it's perfectly ok to feel however you want to feel about this. If you want to sit this one out, nobody is going to force you otherwise.
Personally, the only thing i'm convinced about is that we have too much speculation and conspiracy theories around here, which tend to muddy the waters considerably.
I generally take things in stride and prefer to test for myself before judging, because i believe that nobody here can claim to have actual knowledge of what happens in 1c's offices.
The reason i'm feeling ok with how things are going is that the end results have been getting better for me as time goes by. I sure would like them to speed up a bit, but i have other things to occupy me besides the sim so it's all good.
Maybe i'm just lucky, but i've seen nothing but improvements on my mid-range PC, patch after patch and for every single update.Or maybe i just had the free time to put in more of an effort during the first months post-release and learned how to properly patch and tweak my installation.
I don't know, because usually i don't know how the people who seem to have the biggest problems do things on their installation to compare: a lot times they don't really say much about what's wrong, except from the fact that they are displeased with something, so i can't really compare or offer any help.

Had a blast tonight. 7 He111s and 1 Ju88 took off from Tramcourt all flying in formation to give those RAF fellas a bomb or 100 :) 8 of us heavies all in formation at around 3000m the whole way. Around the 1/2 way point we picked up a couple 109 escorts. Within 2 minutes to target the spittys showed up and then a we had a massive fight. Spittys attacking the bombers, cannon shells from the 109s splattering all over the place, staying in formation we managed to drop our bombs.
All but 3 of us made it back home safe and sound. It was a good 2 hour sortie in a nice formation. One of the players that hopped in as a gunner even got a pilot kill. Not a single crash (even a launcher one at that :) ).
This is such a huge improvement for me. I wish it worked better for those having problems.
Edit: Doc shot this all on tape. Expect a video sometime in the near future ;)
@Ataros - Great post I hope everyone is sending their crash logs in and maybe giving a little summary of what they were doing when it happened. We were trying to get it to crash with formations and can't make it happen. Perhaps we'll get a group of 10 or more bombers in a formation tomorrow!

As the Ju88 in Bliss's harrowing recount, I must say it was great fun getting harrased inbound and outbound by multiple allied fighters durring our sortie last night in the ATAG server.
No ctd for anyone in our bomber group:cool:
I want to see 20 manned bombers in formation next :grin::grin::grin:

Good to here positive reports. Looking forward to the video. Please post it as a new thread in the main forums. Will attract more bombers to ATAG probably  and encourage others who almost lost hope :)
This clearly shows there is progress. Most of the time we do not realize (including myself) how small the team is and how much trouble they are facing starting from 2008 crisis with all merges and personnel rotation :-x
Oleg mentioned that one of reasons for troubled launch was that they tried to implement too many features. Now they still have to deal with this complexity. It will take time. Send crash and bugreports please.

Hey Bliss, ju88 was among my favourite plane in il2, in cloD since the release I'm confident and 'combat ready' only in spit Ia, give me some time to jump in a LW bomber and I'll join your formation!
