Hi,
I have had this sim for many months now but was afraid to start it due to the issued it had after release. It's been a long time since I bought it and I know there were many updates since. I hope to spend some time with it as I'm a big fan of WWII aircraft and flying in general. However, after launching the game and choosing to fly straight away (default options) my PC started choaking...
Is there any way to make this sim work for me?
I know there's a Technical Forum but as I said I was away from CoD since it was released and all the explanations are gibberish to me. Please, help me set up this sim!
My rig:
Win7 64bit Home Premium
Phenom II 6core @ 3.2GHz
16GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Radeon HD4890 2GB DDR5 :(:(:(
Hotaw Warthog
TrackIR4
Saitek Rudder Pedals
Somehow, I don't believe it's too weak to run this game in med-high settings...
BTW, I got my copy of CoD from STEAM...
Thanks!

Its not the just amount of ram that makes a videocard good, its also the speed of the ram and the GPU that make it fast and in most cases video cards are too slow to make use of all the ram the card has...
see its much cheaper to just stick 2GB of ram on a card than it is to put a faster GPU and faster ram on it, so they can stick big numbers on the box and people go ooohh ahhh... but if you wanna play this game on medium-high settings you need something more like a GTX560 or ATi 6870, tho a pair of either of those cards would ensure... of coarse better cards than those would be better...

You should be able to play CoD with that system. I started with a 2.4 dual core and a 9600gt card and 6gb ram and could get it running with some minor problems (like stuttering when down low over land) but I had to turn the settings down to med---low. Go into your video settings and turn off grass, shadows, V/sync (unless you're getting tearing problems), epilepsy filter and ssao. The video card you have is probably the weak point so don't expect to get high frame rates. As Tenn has said an up grade with that will give you better frame rates but not necessarily smoother play as there is still some stuttering that a lot of us are having (mainly minor) The new graphics engine, when it is finally ready for release, we hope will improve things so don't go out and spend heaps of dollars on a new card until you see how things are running after that. Unless you can get about 30fps+ when in game you will probably find a stuttery mess. The developers have said they expect improvements with frame rates will in crease by 50%+ with the new patch, so all of us are waiting in hope of this happening. In the mean time enjoy what you can get at the moment, this is going to be a great sim finally. See my sig below to see what I have now, it isn't too dis-similar to yours except I'm running Sli with two cards that are considered at the bottom end for performance. I'm getting good fps over land (40--60) and 80+ over water. The micro stuttering that I'm getting disappears (or appears to) when up high. A lot of players that go online to play at a server are having some CTD's (crash to desktop) which is spoiling their online experience, they are hoping the new graphics will fix that. Does your M/b support crossfire/Sli?? if so another card of the same that you have now will get you better performance. Your 4890 will out perform my Gts450 as single cards so get into the setup screens and optimise for your best performance.

A new engine?! Wow! That could work... Do we know when it should roughly be ready?
PS. Thank you both for help!

hey mangaroca...in case you havent done it already, try to delete the ubisoft logo(the intro video) of the game...many users with ati cards have a considerable performance increase by deleting the file, which is stored in your steam folder:steam/steamapps/common/il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover/parts/core/GUI......there is a file called logo, just delete it and you may see a way better performing game.

Gentlemen,
I have deleted the logo file, set my settings to "medium" and to my amazement the sim became playable! It stutters from time to time but switching off the Aero Theme under Windows 7 seems to be fixing it.
The only problem left for me to fix now (apart from getting the funds for a Crossfire Tandem ;P) is the ugly looking "shadow bug"... It's hard for me to explain it but it's as if the shadowed areas (both inside the cockpit and outside, on the fuselage) were shown in reversed, negative colours. Hmm, it's not even that - they seem to be all the colours of the rainbow: from red, through green and blue but white seems to be the most common. It is definitely only the shadows that are affected because when flying with the sun behind my back the cockpit looks "clean". When I turn however, all the shaded areas around the clocks get the "rainbow theme"... The rest of the textures apply correctly and I see no problems there. Any ideas?
Also, why aren't the control surfaces and the in-game flight stick working smoothly? Instead, they "stutter" and make flying unrealistic...
