View Full Version : N680GTX has just made my il2cod "flyable"

just my 2cents:

i have been using a 295GTX for the last 2-3 years, and today i have decided to upgrade and picked up an MSI N680GTX

so, with the current version of il2cod and the 295GTX i was having an average of 7-15fps and annoying stutters with the following settings (see the screen below), flying or doing anything in the sim was just impossible and with lower settings it was just looking ugly:

http://i.imgur.com/YEgjk.jpg

now, with the N680GTX and the same settings as above, i am having an average of 19-38 FPS! and i just couldn't believe how nearly smoothly it was running, the performance improvement was really really MAJOR here! it became nearly stutterless and, now definitely PLAYABLE/FLYABLE...

so far, i no longer need to wait for the new patch as i got my il2cod "fixed" somehow..

my other system specs are: i5 (oclocked to 4ghz), 8gb ram, win7 64bit

Good to hear, you will be very impressed wit the next patch though. Maybe you could tune a the highs to very high.

Agree to OP here. Put in an 680GTX in my rig too yesterday. 2560x1500 with everything to high and pretty smooth gameplay. Now if the patch makes whats its said to be doing CloD will be my next spare time filler and i can hopeyfully finally wave goodbye to the well done but "biased to hell an back FM- game" ROF.

I have a avg 85 fps on my rig. never drops below 58.

If i put vsync on i get 60fps and never below 58.

I run same full settings. power is in the i7

the RoF are canned and scripted FM's, with their current game core it wont get any better then what it is now, and/or has been in the past

nice, good to see the major gfx card upgrade made such an improvement :) am just slightly concerned you are qualifying your statement with the "nearly smoothly" it was running and "nearly stutterless"

for a 500$ card with 2gb vram, i'd expect/hope it would run smooooooth and flawless in all circumstances (over city, with large plane formations and close formation flying, flying through hangars, and with dust/smoke)

we need that gfx patch !!

Hey highness, I noticed you had the model detail set to high, try original, its probably the last setting you want move down. You should notice the cockpits and planes are improved with little performance hit:)

Let us know if its better for you;)

This would be reality if the game was optimized and working properly but it isn't so don't expect it to run smoothly in "all circumstances". If a code has enough flaws in it not even brute force will overcome some things, like smoke and particle effects in this case. If the patch delivers up to 100% performance increase in average and minimum FPS then the 680 will kick some serious b*tt, so will also many lower tier graphic cards.

This is so irrelevant. You have missed the word "biased" in post of Winger. If he thinks that RoF is biased towards Allies, then I wonder what he will think when La5s will be appearing in IL2 sequels.

Ill just fly them then:P Just like i started to fly allied porsches in ROF. No matter wich side. Its just stupid to favor one side over the other if i am a developer. Sadly seems to be common in Flightsims.

I can not agree here. I had a I7 2700 before, when i still had my GTX 480 running and i have it now. The big performanceboost came from the graphicscard with no doubt.

OT:

And what do you expect? FM based on extensive flight tests?

There is so little info about how those aieplanes flew. Modern flight test data comes from the 50s or 60s. And I mean "modern". In WWII era the did have flight test but mainly based on the main parameters and never combined as it was done later when E-M diagrams were created.

In wwI era they were just trying to fix the biggest engine possible in a given airframe or an airframe around a given engine.

I think the 777 guys have done a hell of a job, taking into consideration the amount of factual information available.

With the "texture quality" being the most hitting (besides SSAO/Epilepsy/AA), right?

Congratulations on the new card but if I may say so you were your own worst enemy with those settings on the old card. Such high settings (with the current graphics software) for Forest plus Grass and SSAO 'on' were always going to drag that card down. Also if you were near buildings, Buildings Detail and Buildings amount set so high could have been a problem.

Even with your new card your only just getting playable fps. Try turning some of those down and watch it leap forward. Big hitters are SSAO and Grass (do we need waving oversized grass?), I'd play with those to start with. Get up to 40-60fps and its a new world.

btw Anti-Aliasing x16 does nothing at the moment. It seems only x2 is working at the moment. You could try turning it off and setting it in your graphics card manager instead.

Do you have Hyperthreading disabled playing CloD?

How does CloD look on your 40" (which resolution btw?). Any problems with reading text on that screen when using as a pc screen?

Thank you :)

S!

Congrats on new card but why on earth PSEUDO?! USe Full Screen. Also put off SSAO, does VERY little for the stutter and lower FPS it causes in some cases. Also building detail to MEDIUM does not affect your visuals the slightest but again a bit more performance. Forest is good enough with Medium already. That antialiasing is as said before, use 2x. Biggest impact you get by setting Effcts to medium, even then they look good but with less effect..worth trying :) And again..grats on the card :)

Congrats on your new card. :) I'll have to chew you up a little for those settings on the old card tho.
This is one of the reasons so many people complain about poor performance. People with older, less powerful hardware use way too high graphics setings. Why would you use 16x antialiasing when the game can't render anything over 2x? All you get is the performance hit with no visual improvement. SSAO and "Original" texture size were also very bad for your old card.
I'm sure this new card will cut trough the game like hot knife in butter and what setings you use won't hurt performance.

Congrats and enjoy it.

19-38 fps on average?! with that card?! Please consider lowering texture quality to high, turn off in-game AA and download the MSAA injector thingie instead. This will dramatically increase your FPS I reckon.

thanks for all advices and recommendations, so now i have ssao&vsync OFF, AA 2x, fullscreen ON, building textures: medium, all the rest is set to high

im having now a very good fps (average 30-35fps) in missions with lots of different ai hardware here and there etc

i tried the quickmission flying over London with the previous settings set to full: i got 11fps (instead of 4-6fps before) :o)

but there is still something weird: despite that im having GRASS set to ON, i have never seen it! everything is dead flat

I got almost the same machine as you have. All settings at high. 2xAA and grass and shadows enabled. With a GTX570 and I2500@4.3 I'm getting around 50fps. It does get below 50fps though (low teens)when I fly close to explosions. I should get my 680 in this week. Somehow I don't think it's going to make that much of a difference. Just a bit faster with less power draw and heat. I'll make sure to do a few benchmarks before and after the switch with the same game settings.

Texture quality "original" for sure. If you want dull out of focus cockpits and airplanes that look lower res for a 1/2 fps improvement then switch from Original : )

Luther mentions Original textures in this link and its true in my experience.
