Some of you guys might of heard of Touchbuddy, well I got it working on my iPad to use virtual cockpit touchscreen controls in CoD (and IL2 too!) with Air Display.
It even works with nvidia surround or AMD Eyefinity!
A nice guy called Buccaneer has already created a profile for a hurricane.
Im going to try adapt it for the spit! ;)
You can control the following with his default profile. (room to add a lot more too!)

What you will need if you want attempt this is;
1. iPad 1 or 2 (or iphone/ipod touch too - less resolution to play with obviously and you'll need to make your own screens)
2. Air Display for iPad by Avatron from the app store. (Its a bit expensive for an iPad App at $10 but it has so many more uses than just for gaming! :)
3. Air Display for PC from ipad.avatron.com
4. Wireless network at home
5. Touch buddy from > http://www.touch-buddy.com/forums/local_links.php?catid=1
6. CoD Profile from touchbuddy forum > http://www.touch-buddy.com/forums/local_links.php?catid=4&sort=N&pp=10&page=2
7. Optional! Touchbuddy toolkit 1.3.4 > http://www.touch-buddy.com/forums/local_links.php?catid=4&sort=N&pp=10&page=2
A couple tips.
You'll have to map the CoD keys to match the CoD profile in the readme.
You'll also need to change mouseuse=2 to mouseuse=1 in the conf.ini in your 1C softclub directory for the touch screen to work while in the game!
Ill take a video in the next couple days of it in action. :)

No they were just part of the panel that Buccaneer used. He must be using it for another game too.
I've already worked on the profile and scaled it from 800x600 to 1027x768 to match the iPad res and today Im going to re-task those switches and add some more! ;)

OMG! You are totally AWESOME!!!
I was about to buy the Asus Transformer Prime. Will this work with the Asus or do we have to use the Ipad?
Also How can we get a working app of this?
When can we get a downloadable file for us to use this with COD?
Love your work!

The touchbuddy app runs in a few different modes.
1. Native On machine
2. Server mode
3. Client mode
I'm using it on my pc in native mode.
The Air display app for ipad/iphone adds an additional extended screen to your PC over your wireless network you run this on both the iPad and pc to create an extended desktop.
Then you launch touchbuddy in local native mode and drag the control panel to your extended screen on the iPad.
Set CoD control keys to match the readme for Touchbuddy for the touchscreen commands.
Change mouseuse=1 in the user copy of conf.ini in 1c softclub folder to enable the mouse/touch screen to work outside the CoD game window.
Technically you could use touchbuddy on another normal monitor and just use the mouse, and you can use it in client/server mode and run the client app on a laptop or 2nd PC.
Launch a game and then just use the controls either with mouse or touchscreen.
When you use touchbuddy with the Ipad it is still running on your PC, all you have done is extended your desktop with Air Display to create an additional wireless touchscreen monitor.
I used to use touchbuddy with an old 15" touch screen hooked up to laptop for 1946. Thats why I researched how to do this with the iPad for CoD. There are far more detailed control panels available for IL2 1946 which work in exactly the same way. You can also use UDPSpeed with Devicelink on IL2 1946 to see realtime virtual gauges.
There is also work going on now by another guy here on the forums to get IL2 virtual gauges working as a native app on iPhone and iPad! Look forward to when he finally releases the beta of that!
Hope that makes it clearer. Ill try take a video tonight with the iPhone 4S in HD so you can see touchbuddy/Air Display in action on CoD.

My understanding is that the Asus transformer runs win7 so you would just run touchbuddy in client/server mode. No need for the air display app. See my description above of how to get a client/server version running. It should work exactly the same as with the iPad.
PS. avatron are also working on a Air Display app for some android based devices. No release date yet.

This looks great. Question though.
In the App Store for Air Display it states:
WINDOWS
To connect to a Windows PC,
Air Display requires Windows XP (32-bit only), or Vista or 7 (32-bit or 64-bit). Windows 7 Starter edition is not supported. Aero and DirectX will be disabled while connected to Air Display, and re-enabled upon disconnection.
Does this affect anything in the game?
FS~Phat
01-18-2012, 09:54 PM
It disables windows Aero but I haven't seen it effect the game in anyway.
I'm guessing Aero uses some direct X API calls and that's why they say direct X is disabled, so I would guess that any apps that make any "aero like" direct x API calls would not work. Fortunately this game and all my others have not been effected by this. (BF3, MWF3, Crisis 2, Skyrim and all the other usual top charting games)

If Air Display just provides an extended desktop than it should be possible to increase CloD resolution to cover this desktop (maybe in windowed mode) and touch-click instruments directly in cockpit without Touchbuddy. Anyone tried this?

I'm over my head technically on this subject...but...we can already click instruments/controls in cockpit, right? I'm not sure what would be on the extended desktop (does "extended" mean a second monitor?)...
If there is a simple answer, thanks. If not, just disregard a stupid question.

Yes an extra monitor. I my case, 4th monitor because I already have Nvidia surround with 3 screens.
@Ataros
It won't work as an extended desktop the way you describe.
You can't get the game window to go in the T shape required.
Not only that but the refresh rate of the iPad extended desktop is quite low so it's not design for fast 3d, it couldnt keep up... It's like 12fps or something. So it's ok for static or low speed graphics but not 3d gaming screens.
@vnvv_stea
No plans to do a 109 panel at the moment, it's not hard to create your own though with the toolkit. It basically uses static images overlayed for animation and macros to record key strokes.
@jg27_mc
As I mentioned earlier, an android version is planned but not yet released.

SO just thought I would post my experience, hope it helps some of you!
StkNRdr posted a helpful link above, getting the app working on Android. I happened to have a $99 HP Touchpad and loaded Android CM7 on it. However any android tablet will do.
The application works great through VNC, i was surprised how fast it was. you don't need a 2nd monitor to run the application, you can run the application on a seperate windows laptop. Or in my case a linux box running windows in a virtual machine... then using your local network send commands to a server instance that you start on your gaming system.
I think the only hurdle is configuring your custom switch panel. after that, it's a neat little application,
I positioned the tablet next to my flight system angled upright and was able to set magnetos , fuel cock , and start the engine from my tablet. my hands did stray far from the stick as they do when using the mouse to start the engines!
if anyone has questions feel free to PM me. I can offer assistance.

sfmadmax,
I have a Samsung 8.9 tablet I am working with. I am connecting to my PC via a fast wifi, though USB is possible if supported by VNC.
I downloaded the programs and installed them. Was able to get the VNC up and running to control my desktop. Loaded the TB Hurricane profile and was able to turn switches, knobs, etc. from the tablet. I haven't tried it in the game as the control keys are different. Was having a difficult time getting the Hurricane panel sized right on the tablet (1280 X 800). It also seemed sluggish to move around the screen. As a result I am wondering about the resource impact to COD.
Thoughts?

In my instructional link above the guy states:
All there is to do now is to drag the TB window into the second screen on your PC.
On your android pan across to the portion of the screen that TB is in and you should see it repeated.
OK, I have one monitor, how do I get this to a "second" screen? If I can do this will panning on the tablet be enough to see it or is there a trick there also?
I tried it from the main screen but it just shows the game on the tablet.
I get 50fps on the tablet. (just kidding!)

OK, update. I could not get the Tight VNC to work. It is me I am sure.
I was however able to get iDisplay to allow me to drop a window onto my tablet and have control over it. If it works with a Chrome window, it should work with a TB window. I did this using WiFi, however, iDisplay is supposed to work through a USB connection also. I haven't been able to get this to work yet but I am going to keep on trying.

OK, I loaded the TB Hurricane panel to my Android tablet and had control over the buttons. I then loaded COD. After the game loaded I hit fly. I was in the cockpit with no hit to fps BUT I could no longer see the TB panel on the tablet (screen goes black). If I alt-tab out of the game the panel comes back. I tried loading it after the game also with the same results.
My game resolution is 1440 X 900 (1920 X 1200 native). Tablet is 1280 X 800. I then changed the desktop screen res first to game res and then loaded the panel to the tablet, same result. Any ideas?
Maybe I need to resize the panel to 800 vertical pixels.
BTW, Don't worry vnvv_stea, I'm not confused. The heart of the thread is getting Touchbuddy panels to work with COD.

StkNRdr

Yes, mouseuse=1 (just double checked). Thanks though.
I resized the panel to 1280 X 800. No dice, still goes black while the game is up on screen, comes back when the game is down.
Tried Tight VNC again but it doesn't seem to open a second screen like iDisplay does, therefore I can't offload the panel.
I'm hoping it is something in PC or tablet settings somewhere that I am overlooking. iDisplay does not have a configuration menu though. I wonder how close iDisplay is to Air Display.

I found the following on the Touchbuddy site:
When I launch my game, the TouchBuddy screen calibration goes off. What gives?
Probably you have buggy Touchscreen Drivers. (There are some older Beta Drivers that seem to work the best.) Another solution is to check whether your game is running at the same resolution as your primary desktop. If it isn't you will need to change it to match so your touchscreen resolution doesn't get changed after calibration. If this doesnt fix the problem, please post a question on the Tech Q&A forum.
This probably explains what is happening to me. My desktop is set to 1920 X 1200. The game changes this to 1440 X 900. The resolution of the Galaxy Tab is 1280 X 800.
The iPad resolution is 1024 X 768. If you have TB working on an iPad with Air Display, what are your desktop versus in game screen resolutions?
StkNRdr
01-29-2012, 08:04 PM
I changed my game res to my desktop res. Same problem.
I then unchecked Full Screen in game and the panel on the tablet stayed on BUT the highest available game resolution without full screen on is only 1024 X 768 so it is pretty small. Also the buttons on the panel, although showing, did not work.
So close but...

Do you have any graphics overlay tools running? They might effect it.
The other thing is make sure the extended screen is not in a position where it might be considered part of the game window. Try different positions and make sure Touchbuddy is fitting completely within the extended screen and not spread across on to your desktop at all. This includes titlebars etc. Other than that Im at a loss.
PS one other thing, it wont work with Pseudo full screen mode!
It should work with Air Display in 1024x768 and desktop res at native 1920x1080.
StkNRdr
01-30-2012, 02:58 AM
Thanks for the effort Phat. No overlays on. The TB panel offloads to the tablet great. I am able to switch on and off knobs, toggles, etc.
I am fairly certain the issue lies with iDisplay. I ran it, loaded the panel to the tablet and started ROF which it the only flight sim I use in native mode. When in the cockpit, the panel stayed on and the switches were working. But for every step forward there is one back. I noticed that the CH Control Manager profile would not work with iDisplay. Also, TrackIR has to be loaded after iDisplay or there is a conflict.
Oddly enough, although I use native res in ROF I also have on Full Screen mode. When I try this in COD with native res it won't work. The closest I got to it working in COD was with Full Screen mode off. Unfortunately the selection of resolutions leaves much to be desired.
I think I will have to try to find a VNC program other than Tight VNC or iDisplay. Tight VNC requires a second physical monitor and iDisplay takes too much control of the graphics, etc. I wish Air Display had an Android app.
Not through yet though, there are many VNCs out there!

Here is something else you tech heads could look at. Apparently you can get Xbox kinect to work on a Windows 7 PC. In theory you could just use you hand to touch the screen and operate the switches? Don't know if this would work or would conflict with track IR but might be worth a play, especially if you have kinect hardware to hand - which I don't.

01-30-2012, 07:16 PM
I only happened to stumble across that site whilst doing some research on modding my lads Xbox controller and on reflection thought it would be unlikely to just work that easily as apps and games would no doubt need to be written especially for kinect. However, my curiosity arroused I did a bit more research and it seems an official version for Windows will be released on February 1, 2012.
It also seems that, according to Wiki, Microsoft released a non-commercial Kinect software development kit for Windows 7 on June 16, 2011, with a commercial version following at a later date. This SDK will allow .NET developers to write Kinecting apps in C++/CLI, C#, or Visual Basic .NET.
So maybe, if IC had a mind, they could write support for Kinect that would provide interaction with the cockpit, head tracking and even voice commands. Which I think would be pretty cool.

Oooo...just came across this, Air Display has been released for Android. Looks like you need ICS which shouldn't be a problem.

I wonder if it will work as well as the Apple app.
Hey guys,
I have setup touch buddy on 2 PCs over a network and I know it is working b/c I can send keystrokes to notepad. CloD on the other hand does not respond to the keystrokes.

Solved the problem by running TB in XP SP2 compatibility mode with admin rights on both machines.

I purchased Air Display for Android. Set it all up. Loaded the panel to my tablet. At that point the switches and toggles work. Load COD and when I am in the cockpit they stop working. Still more debugging to try.

hi guys,
i just bumped into this interesting thread and i was starting to sort out how to install all the required stuff in my iPad and the Pc when I came across another iPad/iPhone application called "custom keypad".
It allows you to create a custom keypad, even with custom images on it and several pages. It requires a vcn server installed in your computer (like the open source tightvcn that can be foun in http://www.tightvnc.com/)
Your computer needs only to have the vcn server software running, no extended desktop, no airdisplay or alike.
I did some quick tests under IL2:1946 and all was correct. I'm looking into using it for CloD because it looks promising.
I also did a quick search for a similar android application but unsecesfully.

Even I managed to get it going in 5 minutes.
it lets you define buttons, trackpads, gesture pads, directional pads and a cute 'virtual animated joystick'

...after playing around with the Custom Keypad app some more, for the life of me I can't see how you can import a picture to use as a background image.
However, I've found KeyPadPro which also does the business AND lets you use a background photo.
..so...no Air Display or touch buddy required if you are wanting to use an iPad as a cockpit controller.

But, if I understand correctly, you still need it to show the in-flight map or check the position of the gear indicator. Am I right?
And one question for Phat, I have read Air Display reviews where they say that a lot of CPU goes into it. This would be terrible for my PC, which needs all its CPU cycles for CoD :)
Any input about this?
Thank you!

As far as I know it doesn't give you any display FROM the Clod application.

Did a search for Keypadpro/key pad pro and couldn't find it, but I have found an app called KeyPad Plus Pro.
Is this the one that's being talked about?

Good job.
I am curious, Navegation Lights and Gun Camera work?

I fitted the profile "for" but not implemented yet. If these are added, they are on the profile waiting for the key to be assigned to them. The switches can be removed/added to/name changed as required.
I built the profile from an RAF perspective, hence the reason why all enemy are German.
All the icons are included with the profile. So if you have the Touchbuddy Toolkit you can easily change the names to reflect the RAF as the enemy for example.

But, if I understand correctly, you still need it to show the in-flight map or check the position of the gear indicator. Am I right?
I think I understand what you are asking? Correct me if wrong.
The Map provided with my profile is the one that some kind soul provided here in the forum last year (I forget the user name - sorry). It is a static Map only, it will not display your aircrafts position.
If you press flaps down (as an example), you will go from Neutral to Down, and the animation for the flaps lever in CLoD will also go from Neutral to Down (same with the Gear selector).
On my TB Profile (remember this is for the Hurricane only), the gear selector in Clod for Port and Starboard wheels Up/Down will also change from Red/Green or vice versa. (You hear them coming up or down anyway. If you have Buttkicker, you feel them coming up or down too).

How do I change the backgrounds and buttons in your profile to fit the iPad 3's resolution? The 800x600 displays so small on there, it's actually harder to use than the regular keyboard

Everything would have to be resized and positioned in the touchbuddy app.

hi guys,
i just bumped into this interesting thread and i was starting to sort out how to install all the required stuff in my iPad and the Pc when I came across another iPad/iPhone application called "custom keypad".
Did you have any luck using the app with CloD?

Buccaneer,
I bought the A2A RAF map, which is a jpeg file. Could I use that as the map in touchbuddy?

Yes binky9, you can.
Just substitute the provided map, for yours (might be a good idea to give your map the same name as mine, if different).
I don't have TB installed just now, so can't do any digging about for you.
If you have any problems give me a shout and I will help you as best I can.

The only problem with a static map is unless you know exactly where your own aircraft is, the map is a bit useless.

I assumed the map in your TB CoD profile was also static. It moves?
Also, on the TB website, the download for TB is 1.3.0.18, but in the Public Chat section there is a note about a TB v2.0 out last February. Any idea where it can be downloaded? Is there a new tool kit, or does the present one work with v2.0?
I'm just getting started with TB. I appreciate the offer of help. I may take you up on that offer, at some point.
Any idea when you might have the Spitfire profile done?
Thanks,

Good morning binky9.
The Map scrolls (rather than moves). Plus you can zoom in/out. It would have been nice to have been able to export the in game map to the TB screen. But this cannot be done - yet. If you are going to use your own map, substitute mine (Profiles > Hurricane > CoD_Map > CoD). Rename your own map as: CoD and replace mine.
I always used TB in the Server/Client configuration. Using an old PC to drive the Client. I moved house 18 months ago, and have not used TB since. I don't have the room for a 2nd PC.
The last version of the TB sofware I used was v1.3.0.18. I have not visited the TB website in 18 months either. Although there was talk of a v2.0 way back when, it was pretty much vapourware.
I will not be doing a Spitfire profile. I have stuck with the Hurricane since CoD was released, awaiting the patches to release the Sims full potential before I moved on to master the Spitfire (and a TB Spitfire profile). However, the Hurricane profile will work in the Spitfire (Gear Up/Down, Flaps Up/Down, Magneto's 1/2, Cockpit Lights etc will all work).
All important switches have now been migrated to my HOTAS (G940). Radiator, Flaps, Gear are all on my Saitek TQ Axis's. Magneto 1/2, Fuel Switch, Boost and Engine Start are all on the TQ's reversers. This works for me.
Technology has moved on since Zorlac made TB public. Tablets have now pretty much made the 2nd PC redundant. If I was ever going to use a 2nd screen for CoD it would be my iPad.

I have got the AirDisplay app on my iPad, and will download the same for the PC tonight. I have downloaded TB, the TB tool kit, and your profile. What do I do next?

Never used Air Display. Never used TB in a standalone configuration (as previously mentioned, mine was a server/client config). However, at a guess, try the following.
1. At the moment, you don't need the TB Toolkit.
2. Unzip (if not already) TB, and put it on C:\
3. Right Click the TB Icon and create a shortcut - put this on your desktop.
3. Open C:\Touchbuddy\Profiles and from my profile copy and paste the following folders: Background Tabs, CoD_Map, FRAPS Switches, Instrument Switches, View Switches. Also copy/paste the CoD_Hurricane.tbc file.
4. If you want to substitute my map for your own at this stage. Replace my map CoD from the CoD_Map folder, rename yours (CoD) and paste it in.
4. Run Air Display
5. Run TB (Local)
6. Load my Hurricane profile. Then drag the TB window to your 2nd monitor using Air Display.
7. Bobs your Aunty - this should work.

I forgot to add. Remember to change your Controls Page to the ones I have specified in the ReadMe. Otherwise when you press Gear Down (for example) nothing will happen!

Guys,
I'm about to try to install TB on my new i7 3770 3rd gen and a tablet PC for touch controls. But I am currently using all four outputs from the GTX 680 for 6 screens, 3 over 3 at 3840 X 2048. Will I need to run in client/server mode? I can't run in local because I don't have a screen to use from the vid card. Is this a correct understanding? I'm a total noob at TB. Thanks for any input. I noted Touch Pilot 1 for GA panels on iPad several months ago, went to the webpage, and intended to suggest military panels and a supply of icons to make our sim specific display profiles. This thread suggests Touchbuddy but many entries are several years old which surprises me. It is a terrific idea. It didn't catch on?I would like panel (1) TO and landing, (2) combat, ground warfare variuos outside views as I use IR5, panel (3) turret, firing MG, bombing, dive brakes etc. What surprises me is no one seems to offer a package to hook up iPad to pc, choose and size many instruments and control wheels, sliders, switches, perhaps blank captions to fill in as desired, etc again sim specific. I would like to exchange iPad for keyboard since my 75 year old memory is better at touching screen images labeled than remembering key strokes..though I do get by!
Thanks for information and I would gladly pay a developer for the software and directions.

This is a good alternative App for the iPad. You can make buttons, sliders, circular controls etc.
KeyPad Plus Pro
http://keypadplus.dopplerthepom.com/Home.html
You just install a free VNC server (TightVNC) to connect the pad to PC.
Works a treat:grin:

Thanks..I will set that up..then buy an Ipad! Are there any profiles for Rise of Flight or CoD? Any sources for buttons, switches, sliders, wheels you reccomend? The Touchbuddy site seems abandoned. I am very surprised as preping MilSim specific panels for ipad sounds like good business potential. CoD Apps?? I will sort it out, many thanks
Who can tell how to make a picture on full the screen display? It is a picture from my ipad 3, very small. thanks.11633

YouTube vids "Touchbuddy" Wild Bill Kelso has sevral panels, very well laid out, Il2 1946. They would be great for CoD. I will copy them when I get an iPad. The site appears inactive, registration not permitted and most thread are several yars old. I think he did exactly what I would like as my memory is weak now. Check the vids.....

Go to "Touch Control"..someone has posted DCS-A10 Warthog flight control panels for iPad. I have visited "TIGHTVCN" and am installing it with the help of a YouTube video..it allows my PC to talk with my iPad. I suggest you look at TouchBuddy Wild Bill Kelso 4 flight panels for Il2 1946. In fact go to YouTube and you will find several videos of his. Touchbuddy site appears inactive now. "Key Pad Plus" app says they have panels, buttons wheels to make your own touch screen panels but not there yet. At 75 yrs I use the "Blunder Forward" technique. I hope to light some sparks in you readers who will work out the way forward. Kelso panels are very nice, I wish I could download his designs for my Cod and I hope to learn the technique..when you see them you will too!
