Has anyone had success running CoD on the Windows8 "Developer Preview" ?
- I'm having no problem with IL2-1946 v 4.10.1m (avg 45+ fps Black Death track with only the on-chip video), & X-Plane 10 ( runs, but more slowly than CoD does on my Win7, 165 Opteron, 8GB Ram, HD4850 machine - when I used only the on-chip video in the new machine).
But I've tried 4 times to get CoD to run on this new machine where I've been playing with Win8 Dev. Preview and it just will never launch.
I've uninstalled & reinstalled twice from "the downloaded program", once from a backup of Cod on the Win7 machine.
No Launch - lots of hard drive activity for about 3 min and then nothing
-- Programs running in background - only Windows Defender
COD filed "verify" correctly and the cache is defragmented
System is ASRock A55-Pro3, FM1 A6-3650 processor, 8GB Ram, HD 6850, 600W OCZ PS,
- Thoughts ?
- I'd "assume" that it's something to do with Steam since IL2-1946 and X-Plane10 install and run only from DVD, but ...
- A "most current" successful uninstall/reinstall step-by-step in case I'm overlooking something out of frustration ?

Preview means just that unfortunately.
Il2 1946 will run in its own environment Dx or OGL
Try Launching CoD with Steam in offline mode under Win8 Preview.
PS:
The Metro Apps are interesting too :)

Yes, I understand it's a "preview". That's why I've tried the "out of the mainstream" apps that I enjoy on it. The Metro apps of Win8 are interesting and some may even be useful, especially with the way Win8 is designed to work on TouchScreen devices. Should be a good option for phones and Tablets IF they can get the way it consumes memory sorted out. Presently it seems that if you have opened a Metro App that app remains in memory until you specifically close or exit it from Task Manager ( much the same way that Win Mobile 6.5 does ). I understand their thinking about the way phones or tablets may be used and the desire to have the most commonly accessed "apps" launch instantly. But for a Desktop or laptop system this may not be the best unless 4GB (or more) of memory becomes standard (the way desktop or laptop machines are typically used ).
It also seems from surveying the .NET software installed on the Win8 machine versus the Win7 one - that .NET ver. 2 cannot be installed on the Win8 machine.
The Win7 machine shows ( using Belarc's ADVISOR ) that .NET 2, .NET 3, and .NET 4 Frameworks are installed.
The Win 8 machine shows that only .NET 3 & .Net 4 Frameworks are installed. Attempting to install the .NET 2 from the redistribution copy of/in CoDhas no apparent effect. Don't know if the .NET 2 Framework redistributable on Microsoft's website is different and would be allowed to install on Win8 ( version number is the same so probably not but... ).
- Does anyone know if CoD relies on any .NET 2 code to run ?
- Are .NET 3 & 4 "backwards compatible" ( wouldn't seem so if the Win7 machine has programs that require .NET 2 to run & there'd be no reason to have .NET 3 remain on a machine if .NET 4 was in use) ?
- When I tried to install .NET 2 from the CoD redistrib a Win8 dialog displayed asking if I really wanted to do it and then when I "allowed it" the same dialog box showed only that .NET 3.5.1 had been refreshed/altered/ or some such thing.
- Does CoD (presently) require any .NET 2 code to run and is the "graphics rewrite " going to change that ?
- Since CoD won't launch on this Win8 machine and the older IL2-1946 (which apparently being older has had no .NET code ) and X-Plane10 ( since it is multi-platform couldn't rely on .NET code ) do run well, could that be the issue and going forward will mean maintaining a Win7 machine for CoD and its future expansions or siblings ?
Just thinking out loud ...

I would think the IL is .Net or .Net framework what version I have no idea.
Not being too conversant with programming myself I'm sure someone will come along soon and comment.
I take it the Launcher.exe drops off of the processes list completely and isn't running at all ?
TBH I remember over 3 years ago with the Win7 rc's busting a blood vessel tweaking them around,
I'm not that bothered this time around as I'm not going to be developing any metro Apps myself I'm happy to wait,
but might have a tinker with it as I have it on a separate HD not VM'd I can swap the drives over.

Yes, that's about it.
Think I'll swap this drive out for a Win7 one, install all the same bits as this one, see what transpires & try to optimize. Then after the "graphics patch" I'll try again later. Probably by then there will have been several newer builds of Win8.

From what I understand CloD runs on .NET4.0, and uses unmanaged calls to the DirectX API.
I would guess the reason why you have got issues is because of the WinRT layer in Win 8 which prevents direct access to the hardware. Win 7 does the same thing but the Win 8 layer is a complete rewrite to cater for Metro apps.
strike through => If CloD was a COM only based app it should run on Win 8 like IL-2 1946 does, but because its running on .NET, Win 8 may be trying to force it to go through WinRT, and it wasn't written to do that.
Actually just had a closer look at Win 8 Desktop Application Development model and I can't see why it shouldn't work, because WinRT is only for Metro apps. I would guess that CloD has some weird / non standard code that is causing issues on Win 8.
I'm only guessing mind you  But like Alpha said, it is a preview after all.
It is interesting that when MS mentions development for games in Win 8 Metro, they talk about 2D and basic 3D apps using C#, VB with XAML.
But for DX 11.1, it's C++ and HLSL only. This might confirm that Direct X will remain an unmanaged API, and probably fuel the rumors that XNA is being phased out.
