I've got my cpu up to3.6..and dialed down the resolution..on buildings and such...I am still playing "original" textures..but am getting a good fps boos witht he resolution down..how much "detail" eye candy do I lose at the lower resolution? Also.where the fps really takes a dramatic hit is when Im engaging and have both guns and cannons firing..I can get a sure 15 fps drop quite quickly..thanks.

Easiest way to test, turn your resolution to 1920x, load a single player air start mission, pause instantly, take a couple of screenshots, changing your views. Then drop the resolution to 1680x, load same mission, take a couple of screenshots, try to get approximately the same shots, same angles. then open up the images and compare. Typically, the smaller the monitor, the less noticeable the lesser resolution will be, as the pictures tend to be pretty fine. On a huge 60", the differences will be much greater. So it all depends on what you can live with.
Thanks for the tip.I will do that.my moniter is 23 inch.so I dont think I'll notice much difference..I didnt take pics yet.but did change inflight the views..and realy didnt notice much at all different...but fps was much improved.the guns when engaging enemy really hits the fps..I run text on original.

An LCD will look best at its native resolution.Dropping down resolutions will increase fps but will not look as sharp.
You can use the resolution cheat and drop back to 800x600.There all the enemy planes are as large as grapefruits.
In the old IL2 the sounds of wing guns would cause a slow down in framerate. It was eventually fixed.I do not know if it is the same for Clod.
Also apparently explosions and ground dust also cause a slow down.

i run 1920x1080 on a 42" LCD and love it. I just turned down the sharpness on the LCD from 50% to 0 and the visual is now much better then turning up sharpness. Online I still see bomber groups in the distance a good few seconds or more than other pilots. They love me been wingman. Great spotter.
Love this game and runs soooo smooth on my pc. Avg 78-85 fps
