Any gains in CloD with 3GB over the 1.5GB one?

Can't say, didn't have the 1.5 GB version before...
Performance in CloD with 3 GB see here (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?p=366246#post366246)

S!

More VRAM = better performance at higher resolutions with AA applied among other things. But I think there is not much of a difference otherwise. I think HardOCP tested it somewhere.

I think I read where Clod uses an abnormal amount of texture memory and that is what causes some of the stutters and micro freezes.Somewhere in the 1.3 gig neighborhood. So people with 3 gig cards are saying it helps in Clod.

However a graphics rewrite is in the works and hopefully some better optimization is in the works.

I have nothing to back this up but if i were buying a new card now it would be at least a 2 gig.But my crystal ball fell off the desk and I am awaiting the new parts.

Well with my measly 1.5gb gtx580 I run the game very, very well.
No stutters and she runs smooth as silk with all the settings high.

Let me see... we have December 2011

If you can help it, wait for 2-3 months for the next generation of NV cards, they will be better, for the same money.

If you can not help it (and looking at the GPU you have now, I would not want to wait myself) then the 3Gb VRAM modell is the one you should buy.
It is not worthwhile saving a little bit of money for the big advantage of doubling the VRAM.

Flying over London, the game has been rated using 2.1Gb VRAM so you may put the 3Gb VRAM in good use.

my 2cents

Again the usage of VRAM and GFX code of CoD in general is far from optimized, so we might see improvements in that department after some patches, even this next one. AMD is also releasing new cards soonish so it will be very interesting to see how they fare along with NV's new offerings.

This past summer I tested both 1.5GB and 3GB GTX580's with a single monitor at 1920x1080 and 2560X1440, didn't see any difference in COD.
If you can wait 2-3 months ,do it.

Future proof your PC. Buy the 3gig it can play every game maximum graphics and will for a good two years I would expect. I always got the bigger better card which sees me wanting to upgrade every 2.5-3years. Never feel I need to upgrade every year.

My rig now plays Il2 and Skyrim on ultra settings, full graphics, and 8 frame pre-rended. Never a stutter.

Il2 avg 84fps Max 157 and I was on the Atag for 14 hours last night.. did not go to bed ;) got up to 58 people on the server and system was smooth as silk in huge dogfigts and lots of action.

just my 2 cents

Thanks for all the replies. http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/froehlich/d055.gif

Unfortunately the card is not for me*, I'm asking on behalf of a squad mate - but the infos are very helpful.

*: In current state that Clod is in, I just cannot justify buying a new card for this game alone...sorry.

As it stands today il2 cod will use more than 2 GB of memory if it is available in SP and MP at times in 1920x1080 resolution. That being said if your buddy is getting a card now get the 3gb as it is not much more, however it does not max out every game .(Witcher 2, Metro 2033, Battlefield 3 etc) but will offer the best experience in most cases

I myself opted for the EVGA gtx580 3GB some months ago and really like the lifetime warranty with available 3 day cross shipping. I had an asus gtx570 burn out and it took more than a month to get through the red tape for the $ back and with no onboard gpu I was out a newly built pc the entire time!(lucky for me it was with in 30days of purchase)

*NVIDIA Keplar may be released in the near future and most certainly will offer some performance gain but when the gtx680 will be released is another story, looking at release dates for the 400 series and the 500 series it is of note that the 480 and 580 cards were released 7 and 8 months after the initial release with 3gb models 3 months after that so it may be some time before the gtx 580 3gb is dethroned.

I am looking into the the 3 gig too..but will hold off until the new patch is out..and might also wait till the new cards are out..as the 580s will then drop in price for sure. I only built this system in June..and did not know there was a 3 gig 580..ohh well...

With my gtx580 3GB I see a VRAM usage up to 2.5 GB, when playing CoD. So that DDR 5 is put at good use ... :-)
