View Full Version : Planes hiding in the bushes - is it a joke?

I flew some online sessions in CloD, and my jaw dropped when I realized that many people use the same defensive maneuver, that is, they dive down under tree level where they can't be seen because one can't collide with trees.
Seriously? *couldn't find a WTF smiley*

Lol!
They will have their eyes wide open when they'll wrap themselves around a tree sooner or later.

I've encountered this quite a few times when hanging around the south coast near RAF Manston: I've damaged quite a lot of spitties there and many of them used that thick patch of forest to slink away.
Personally I'de rather see the return of "oleg" trees combined with the visibile trees, if the outer layer of trees is the visibile type then having the oleg trees of '46 in the center then we not only can see the trees but also damn well collide with them too!

It is a great idea :D
What happens if the hunter sets his own graphics to: Trees= very low? ;)

I have trees off....no point in having them without collision model...

you could blame me for this i guess. i have tress off for performance, so i have no ideia were the trees are.

And that's probably why we do not have a collision model - because ppl can turn them off.
Solution would be to implement performance-friendly (simple looking) trees as option, remove the "tree-off" option (after proof that these don't impede performance for weaker machines) and equip all trees with a collision model.
My guess however is that we will have collision models only in a couple of years when the weaker machines have disappeared or have become marginal.

Ooops! That was a good point. Thanks for mentioning it Pupo! :)
I fly with trees very low (=no trees) or trees low (very few) so it does not hinder visibility even if somebody is low near ground.

Err...you're saying this as if it was an impossible task to develop trees that look good, have a collision model and have no impact on performance, and nobody has done it before..
Try RoF for instance.

I am not overwhelmed by the trees in RoF, that's all. I like the CoD trees better except that they don't have a damage model right now.
It is true that RoF fixed basically their performance issues that they had initially (remember the I've-got-stutters-threads in the Rof Forum?). But I also think that CoD has the edge in terms of graphics right now and I even don't run it yet on max settings.
BTW: I do not have any performance issues with trees at all in CoD. Some seem to have though.

Turn trees of or =very low then let them THINK they are hiding :) Right up to the point where you blow their backsides off.

Why are you fighting so low? Sooner or later an enemy is going to come along with an altitude advantage and smack you down.
Leave the arcade dogfighter ace guys to turn and burn down on the deck, and go find yourself some targets at altitude.

If trees are made collidable then surely it would have to be made a server side option in the same way as the realism settings, otherwise you may start seeing planes crash into invisible objects etc. Obviously this can only happen when the performance issues have been ironed out otherwise this would exclude players with weaker machines playing online.

i would prefer a "oleg-trees from 1946" over a "trees off" option, if it was available. also, if this allowed for colision would be nice

People dive because it is so much easier to see a plane above you than below in game. Planes can literally disappear to me when they cross under the horizon and its a major turn off to me in the sim.
How is that a turn off?
Only time I end up on the deck is when I've decided to leave the battle. Full throttle on the deck flying back to France!

There are many reasons people dive away in combat.
One may be to disengage from combat. Either your hoping that you'll get lost in the ground clutter and your opponent will loose contact with you or that they don't want to loose their height advantage.
The other may be that they're working with a squad mate and they're trying to get you to chase after them so their squad mate can get you when your engrossed in trying to get that kill.
I personally don't fly with trees on because the flickering shadows and hit to the frame rate. I'm sure there will be less flying through trees when they sort out those issue
Cheers

BTW I don't usually fly low, buti t was a case of a scrabmle, a 109 attacknig the airfield. As soon as I took off and got behind him, he hid in the trees.

Its called camouflage ;)

its more like a klingon cloaking device than camouflage. :(

Trees in RoF are inferior by far. They rotate to face you as you pass.
In my experience the 109's dive low and up. If you try that in a Hurricane or Spit you lose too much e and can't get back up to him. I'm not seeing much height loss on the 109 from a 1000m dive and zoom climb at the moment.

Preformance issues, having collisions detection for all those trees would slow even powerfull systems down.
