View Full Version : Stutters & Tweaks

S!
As we know this sim is still stuttering for most people even with powerful rigs as mine. I was so puzzled that I´d start to test every possible way to get rid of it, because stutters im a flight sim is a main killer. So this post it´s to share tweaks that reduced or eliminated this plague.
Here are mines:
- In game video confg everything is HIGH but Medium Forest, grass, shadows and roads on, vsync off (is forced on on NVCP with 4xAA and 4xAF).
- this one is from some dude in the net:
"One thing to try, stolen from Saint's Row 2: disable page file, clear the Windows prefetch directory. Reboot, start the game, load a game, quit and restart the game. That solved a lot of stuttering on that game. You'll basically teach Windows to load the game without virtual memory."
C:\Windows\Prefetch
- CPU overclocked to 4.0GHz, memory bus to 925MHz, FSB to 200MHz and GPU to 830/1660/2004.
Overall I have 48FPS average but clouds and low level flight are the main hit on performance/ stutters.
Also I have a feeling that it stutters more on a SSD then a HD, don´t know why. I´ll make some tests with a HD.
Well, I´m looking for to yours tweaks.

Hello,
the most stutters on my system coming from land shading, so i switched it to low. Well maybe its unacceptable for most people but try and see!
Shadows also off, but (for me) they are ugly and buggy anyway. With these settings I get nearly 50-60 frames mostly.
Other settings: textures high, forest low/very low, buildings medium, effects medium, AA off, model high, land detail medium, v sync on, grass off.
Oh and resolution at 1920x1080, anyway this week I change my GPU to Club3D HD 6870 2Gb.. hopefully i can turn up some details!
Cheers!

S!
Yes, the main culprit are shadows, it reminds me the Perfect Mode in IL2 FB, it took me 2 years to fly in that best mode. Also we have dynamic clouds and since Beta patch 2 it´s a major hit in performance, saddly.
I tested SSD x HD for stutters and is pretty much the same, sure SSD loading is very, very fast.
I believe that with this 2GB card it will let you increase settings.
By the way HT is off.

S!
Yes, HT is also off, same as page file but doesn't help. Yeah, same here regarding IL2/FB/1946.
Be sure in one year we have all 2-4Gb VGA memory :-), but maybe with further development the demand will also rise up, it's just the beginning!
So at the moment no tweaks help that much, seems the dev's turn to tweak further :-)!
Cheers!

Before the patch i had no problems After i get frozen screens ..no ingame settings were changed all were on high
However I do speed tests and run a great net connection I get double the Mbps then i pay for so shhhhh! I close processes i don't need, Clean my ram, Defrag on closing my computer down. Slight OC on my Vid card I'm running 1024 x 768 on a 47 inch screen
Next month im getting the Asus Crosshair formula V motherboard and a 8 Core CPU Xmas wishlist will be 12 gigs of ram and a 6xxx series video card
Even that said i know i still wil have problems with running Cliffs
Seems everyone from low end user to high end gamming rigs are getting issues Get sorta peved that the updates are """fixed bombing gyro""" when you can't even fly the dam plane

I guess you belong to the ones who have no problems distinguishing the dots from distance... :)
By the way, nice new rig, the planned one!

A lot of people could fly the planes, and for the fighters could do everything basic that you need to have a decent flight/fight. Bombers couldn't level bomb at all, making the whole class of plane useless, therefore they fixed the bombing gyro.
You shouldn't have been able to run your setup at full high, so whatever the new patch brought, fixed your "problem".
Well it's great to know while i'm in a frozzen window my "bomber" has a working gyro
LOL your right no one on CLOD should be able to run at full high settings untill theres a patch for there cpu of win7 app or video card I seen people with duel sli/crossfire I-7 12 gigs 25mbps All upgraded to play the game to find out there issue isn't a patch issue cause we now have working "gyros"

This is interesting. Seems that MSI Afterburner can cause stutters.

I use CCC no problems with shutters i also have 3 external fans plus the Cpu fan, Psu fan and video card fan .. cool cool temps even in OC

A quick hint for ATI users..
someone (don't remember who, sorry) posted a tip to get less stutter (after doing this its disappeared for me).
Set your video presets in CCC on "Performance" or "Optimal Performance" for AMD Vision Engine Control Center with newest drivers.
Really huge improvement in fps and reducing stutter!
Thanks (again) to the guy who found this :)

4 Gb ram and a 5770 GPU shouldn't be able to run a current gen game maxed out. The game was pretty stable for a good number of people prior to this patch, I imagine they thought they had alot of the crashes worked out, and could spare people for the gyro. Heck, if some people had their way, we'd all be on the release version of the game engine, but with working comms... Devs work in mysterious ways, heh.
How does that 47" look at those resolutions? I have an old 37" LG laying around, I've been thinking of hooking up to my rig.
I have to update my sig .. 6 gigs duel channel DDR3 the 5770 isn't that bad you can OC it runs HD no problems Eyefinity Multi-Monitors Yes its a few years old but its just now marking the low end of mid range video cards GTX-280/5770 I don't think my issue is my video card just yet .. otherwise i would have lag or burps .. i checked for heat issues or spikes in the system while playing Normal temps and Cpu Gpu normal .. 47" looks great for 47" I'm sure 18.5" 3D screen would look awsome But i'm not running out to buy one just yet .. p.s. I checked my drivers to see if any updates were made ..0

Hi to all,
I'm writing because I need your help to define "micro stutters".
This because in front of what I always guessed to be micro stutters playing IL2 Sturmovik series in the past, at this moment I've another kind of problem that I could call as "micro slowdowns" while the older could be for me like "micro freezes".
Trying to be more understandable, the micro slowdowns that I find flying IL2 CoD, look like the old trouble came with the first AMD X2 Processors that needed a patch to play games at the best way
So I would like to know which of them you mean speaking about in this thread.
thanks in advance

I just came back after a long absence and spent time with the sim yesterday.
I've noticed an old trick that helped alleviate stuttering (for me anyway) - which was to disable windows aero. Tested again last night on TBD track and it made quite a difference in smooth rendering - playback.
- Turn windows aero off, by right clicking the "Launcher.exe" in the CoD root directory to select Properties. Select the "Compatibility" tab then check "Disable Desktop Composition" and hit "OK"
If you've done this correctly, when CoD starts you'll get a message from windows saying "The Color Scheme has been changed to Windows Basic"......
To see if this affects you, I'd suggest running "The Black Death" track under your current configuration once - maybe take a fraps benchmark if it's easy. Then Disable Desktop Composition, restart - and run TBD track again. What I see is a signficant change in longer duration stutters or "pulsing" as the track is played back.
Maybe that can help - maybe not - but since this hasn't been posted since April - thought I'd throw it out there. Amazing that there are not more stickies for this sort of thing around (or I'm just blind).

I did that, but thanks for the info. Ive got stutters only when somebody repawns and not always. But the slowdowns occur when the dust is near (lets say when ditching) or (sometimes) when more planes are near, low, in dogfight....

Hey Grathos, let me know if it helps with current software build.. good to see you, man.
Tvrdi, it helps - but as I looked at it last night - it isn't a miracle cure. When TBD is running without it, there's this kind of slow pulsing of the track. It did stop that. Benchmark with Aero enabled - went down to minimum of 0 fps. With Aero disabled - popped back up to 6 - average fps up by 5 fps.
Off to practice bombing....

Exacly there are huge slow downs when more planes are in dogfight over land expecially when you make minimum FOV ( gunsight view) on them. Game could slow down even to 2 fps even if normaly i got 40-50 fps.

Gents, I would recommend to try your tests flying at the ATAG Server.
It is the first server I saw where I can fly on a single GTX570 card 3024x resolution at 50-60fps constant over land, bombers, planes etc etc without experiencing stutters (I fly without SLI since I realised it doubles fps but reduces the smoothness of the game).
ATAG changed completely my view about the game...
The only problem I have now is that when I spend too much time near the bomber formations and max zoom (gunsight mode) the memory leak is much faster.
~S~
PS: Gunslinger! It has been a long time, I think last time was the online team event (TUSA - 335th).Nice too see you around!

Can concur, ATAG is a nice server to fly. A Launcher.exe crash now and then, but nothing serious. I rarely use max zoom, rather the middle and far out.
Hello, guys.
I am just posting to let you know that i upgraded from a single 4870 512mb to a 6950 2gb.
Before: Unplayable, lots of stutter no matter the settings. Also low fps..
After: Everything on high, also roads ssao grass ON, i can get 35fps average on black death track. Also, i get no stutter at all. Only very rarely in online games, but that's more like a hiccup than constant stutter.
I am running on a i7 950 stock with 6gb ram and the aforementioned 6950 2gb ati card.
Edit : win7 64bit

one major find for me is the , uncheck of the ingame radio comms, think this is a resource hog atm causing a lot of lag ingame stutters ,
to my suprize when i unchecked this feature in audio options, its greatly reduced this glitch.

Holla guys, i deleted my conf.ini from the 1cSoft folder in the my docs folder (ive never dont this b4) and noticed it made a massive difference for me. Apon restart i jumped online (the only way i play CLoD) and a couple of things things happened:
1. smooth gameplay with default settings created in the new conf.ini - most things on medium settings (except landshading at low, grass and epilepsy filter off which i did manually), which suprised the crud out of me considering i normally have it all on low. Very very smooth.
2. i almost done my load cause id forgotten how awsome it looked :P
anyways, after the usual memory CTD destroyed my fun. i went back in and changed the settings to how i had it before and it couldnt be better. 10fps gain on how it used to be.
Im not sure if it will work for anyone else, but its worth a shot :)

thaks boys, I found it
I can see a few improvements in stutters into the black death track just before the explosion about min frame rate (due to the radio comm voices) but finally I get the same results for media, max and min. So it is usefull for that kind of stutters.
