One thing to consder.. the audio from that video is most likly from a mic placed on the dash that is exposed to the cockpit..
Where as 'most' pilots wore helmets that covered the ears.. which also contained a head set (speaker) to the radio.. Which would reduce the cockpit noise
In short, if you want to hear what the pilots 'heard' than you need to place the mic in the helmet between the ear and ear pad

There isn't a huge difference to me. Maybe it should be tad higher in pitch, but not bad, I think. In order to get the full experience though, one would have to crank up the volume until his or her ears start to bleed :-P

There is a RL difference with the two AC. The 109s exhaust exits just above the wing root. The Spits exits at the top of engine cowling.

Right. The 109 is quieter because of the stubs being down at your feet. Just remember this 109 is doing dives and loops, aerobatics over an airfield that's why you hear the increase of wind noise because of the dives.

And a little more explanation from Dave Southwood.

I was trying to get across that the Spitfire's in cockpit sound was very good. Somewhere in this forum it was suggested that only the 109 sounded good.

Hmmm, I haven't seen anyone complain about the Merlin in-cockpit or external start-up sounds. They're keepers. The Merlin in-flight external and flyby sounds, OTOH, don't sound like Merlins.

I agree with you on the externals. But they are so much better than they were stock out of the box.
