I'm not sure how many of you guys on this forum follow rugby, but there is an interesting match scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday 15 September) in New Zealand. The USA will play Russia in the Rugby World Cup- although it is a minor sport in both countries i will be watching with interest.
I will be supporting the Russians- i always like to see the underdog do well. The USA are the current Olympic rugby champions as they won the gold medal in 1920 & 1924.
GO THE RUSSIANS!

BTW- well done Canada, they played well to bet Tonga this afternoon.

I was in the US for the Ireland v US game and for the first time they actually showed it on telly, on NBC Sports. Despite the fact that Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the US at the moment, hardly any US people were in the bar. Needless to say the place was packed to the hilt with Irishmen.

Allez Les Ruskis!

how does winning in the 1920s make us the rugby champion?? i can only assume this is a typo of some sort....did you mean to say 2000 and 2004??

I think rugby hasn't been an olympic sport since 1924........so that would be my guess.

It's my poor attempt at humor. Rugby hasn't been played at the olympics since 1924 so that makes the USA the 'current' champions until the next medal is awarded in 2016 ;).

I just thought that as this is a Russian forum the mods might have a passing interest in tonight's match- and watching the rugby is interfering with the time i have to play COD:-P

Rugby tragic here :)

Should be an interesting match - 19th v 18th according to IRB rankings. The US is ranked 18th.

In my perverse mind I was actually hoping that the game was played at Invercargill (southern tip of the south Island - closest point in NZ to Antartica). Invercargill is very cold and the likelyhood of a frozen pitch is quite high, so the USA and Russia could swap their rugby boots for ice skates and reprise there Ice Hockey battles. :)

Good game- low scoring but hard fought. USA won but did it tough.
Russia lacking a good scrum half but have some talent in their squad. As for their kicker.... lucky for him the gulag is no longer used!

Unfortunately I'm at work and haven't had a chance to watch the game. I didn't even know the Russians played rugby. Just for that fact, I was quite interested in watching this game.
