I know that is not of much use to non-readers but in this month's copy there is some very interesting results regarding benchmarking and Graphics setup which on a reasonable system was running at a 21fps minimum with Very High settings.

I'll see if someone else can figure out how to post what was done without infringing copyright...but it was an impressive testing regime that seems to work.

There is hope chaps.....there is hope and just think with the Graphics work beng done at the moment, it could be great!!!!

Cheers, MP

Great! Of course it's a UK magazine, just went to their website, I could buy this issue online, but have to pay for oversees shipping. No clue where the pound stands compared to the dollar.
Ughhhh....I'll just wait a bit more, maybe someone can type up some tips from the article, looks like you cannot subscribe and see the magazine online.

10% of the article can be considered fair use, and in this case, for educational and discussion purposes

What? They did this with CloD?

Yes, they did it with CloD, it really is a great diagnosis and he got it working really well after much tweaking. If someone can work out how to post without infringement it would be a great article to feature.

Nine-Lives posted this:

For those who can't access the mag this is a very brief summary of what they found.

This is no substitute for buying the magazine though as it's excellent.

Basically they tried various settings and posted the max/average/min frame rates:

(This is with Corei7 920 over-clocked @4GHz, Radeon HD6870, 12GB RAM at 1920x1280 rez.)

ATI users take note.....There is some stuff about the Radeon clock speeds which I won't go into here as you need to read them for yourself to fix a bug with them-the frames below are with the bug fixed using ATI tray tools to lock the clocks.

1. Stock frames with settings 'High' with forest to 'low', texture qual to 'original', grass disabled, AA, AE, SSAO and Vsync all to 'off' - frames 13/54/117

2. Stock frames with everything maxed out 'very high' but grass 'off' - frames 7/46/107

3. As 2 above with AA turned off in game but turned on in graphics card control panel 8x - frames 10/51/117

4. As 3 above with Vsync off in game but on in graphics card control panel - frames 13/52/119

5. As 4 above with texture in game changed from 'high' to 'original' - frames 15/52/117

6. As 5 above but with AF enabled in the graphics card control panel set to 8x instead of application controlled. - frames 19/58/145

7. As 6 above but with the cards AF set to 4x. - frames 21/63/144

So as you can see the minimum frames have gone from the stock 7 to 21 and average 46 to 63.

Of course your own pc set up may vary these results. And grass is off so it's not going to look as good when sat on the ground but as grass and forest seem to be the biggest frame rate killer you may think this is worthwhile.

Hope this helps. It will be interesting to see what you get with these changes.

I would add that at step 7, the Textures were set back to 'High' and not 'Original' if I read the Magazine correctly?

The mag won't be available here in sweden until in a week or two.

I don't get that 7 bullet list.
Is this correct?

All MAX Settings Except
- Grass OFF
- Textures HIGH
- AA 8X on card and OFF in game
- V-sync ON on card and OFF in game
- AF 4X on card and OFF in game

I run with grass, AA and AF off already so guess this won't do anything for me.
I'll buy the mag anyhow.

Did they state at what resolution they were doing the tests with? Which ATI driver version? Some basic info is missing here.

If people read right and used the forum search then I wouldn't get the chance to shine and help others so...thank you. :-D

dont mean to dig up an old thread if this is but i found this last night, follows the intructions and it gave me a noticeable improvement even though i had everything on low/off before (except effect, couldnt do without planes going down with no smoke...)

dont get how but it improved performance and looks better as well.

the most noticable thing i had was when i got a plane to start flaming the smoke effects really slowed down my framerate when i tried to fly through the smoke (most of the time as soon as i got good hits) , its much smoother now

just thought id register share this in case others thought it wouldnt help, its worth a try

my comp specs (no making jokes pls i know im behind the times)

windows 7 64bit
amd dual core 2.8ghz
4 gig ram
9600gt 1gb card

I bought the zine to read about the "miracle" but it's all about turning off AA/AF in game and turning grass off and put textures to high (from original).
No news to me as I've benchmarked ALL variant of settings.

None shall laugh at these specs. I have pretty much the same, and I´m proud.

Anyhow, I bought a copy today and had to put things waaay down low and the res. too, in order to get a fair performance (which is everything in flying..)

I´ll be trying out these procedures tomorrow.

My specs...

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz)
Win7 x64 (SP1), DirectX 9.0c NVIDIA Geforce 8800GT 512Mb, 2Gb RAM, 2,8Tb HD

(I´ll be buying more RAM during the fall, and more stuff when I get the funds.. I still have a decent motherboard which can take all the high end stuff..)
