What a disapointment.:(

Q. What will be the player count for the online battles? 32, 64, 128, or as far up as 256?

A. We believe that the optimal number is 32. That's not a technical question — we can support up to 256 players or even more. This is just a design decision.

Q. How big are the online maps? Are they bigger than what we saw in Wings of Prey?

A. We don't think that for a battle focused online game we need bigger maps. However, we are planning bigger maps for the Jet planes.

You can play pretty much any game with 32 players in one room. Massive Multiplayers should be just that....MASSIVE.

Please go fly a few missions in Aces High and see how dramatically different is a game with 32 players compared to a game with 300+ players.

Back in the day, when I usded to play AH, many times we would go attack some enemy positions with over 100 players in the strike team. The defenses were in many ocasions just as strong.

That's massive multiplayer, not some 30-40 planes skirmish on a tiny map.

Up to this moment I was looking forward to this game. All my interest died right here. :(

Thanks for the heads up! Read the article, signed up for beta testing. :) Also, you don't have to pay 40€ to beta test this game;).

Actually I went to the Gaijin website and wrote this:

"It's very impressive to hear from Anton and great he has taken time to answer the questions on another forum?

Anyway, I was impressed with all the current news, except this one detail:

Q. How big are the online maps? Are they bigger than what we saw in Wings of Prey?

A. We don't think that for a battle focused online game we need bigger maps. However, we are planning bigger maps for the Jet planes.

What I don't understand with that, is that currently every Map I start in online is really small and all I see are red-square icons flying around with pilots killing veryone (no-teams).

So if the Map stays the same, what roll will there be for Bomber pilots trying to take out enemy fuel and munitions areas if the map only allows a short flight?

It sounds almost as though there will be no-need for take-off and landing, everything will happen in a very small area and most of all, there will be no benefit taking a bomber as (from what I have seen in most online games with a Bomber involved (IL2)), these Pilots love a mission to involve, take-off, climb to altitude, meet up with Fighters, get to target, be defended from enemy aircraft, then try and get back while being covered by Friendly Fighters.

If the map stays the same size, I can only envisage Dogfighting and can't see how a dynamic rolling battlefront can evolve in such a small arena.

I would hope that in the Beta test they do try a missions/missions where they use Bombers on a larger map (I believe the maximum was stated at 256k/m x 256k/m and I think this would be a really benificial test, not only for the game , but also for Mission Builders who will know they can create large-scale missions allowing bombers to be escorted to a target?

I'd appreciate thoughts on this, but also hope the Developer's consider at-least one large map for the Beta (and maybe 128x128 players on another if possible?

Cheers, MP"

I would suggest that if you have signed up for the Beta it may be worth mentioning over at the Gaijin forums that as it will be a Beta test, it may be worth actually stressing the sytem with a large map and large amount of players....that is what a Beta is for?

At-least they do listen to feedback, so it may be worth visiting this thread I created and posting a vote:

Same sized maps? More arcade rubbish then. Shame, was holding out some kind of hope.

And "MMO" with "32 players"? Priceless!

Yeah :( I'm no bomber pilot but escorting them is fun. I knew it was just gonna be another fighter game with no depth to it.

in the old IL2 COOP onlinewars there where seldom more than 20 players in one mission, ok, bolstered in numbers by AI controled planes :)

For a dogfight kind of war, 32 player max is notvenough IMHO, and to call it MassiveOnlinePlay :D

I guess time will tell!
But if it will be 'just' airquake between fighters- its no game for me.

And after everything they said about learning from the last one and players' feedback/comments. Looks like they learned the square root of FA.

Hmm.... I won't bother to look it up after the "mmo of 32".

One thing I was hoping for of CoD was a central server (I'd even pay a modest sub) with a much larger on-line capability like 256 players but it doesn't seem likely.

3 words "world of tanks" , play'd it , moved on. Did not expect anything from that **** game company.

From my gross understanding of the network connections from fooling around with the DOS server box, I think 255 players online in a single server is actually possible. Our server definitely has the hardware to pull it off. We just got upgraded to from a 1gps to a 10gbps up/down connection as well. (Who could ever possibly use that much lol?) Hopefully, we'll get there one day. Once the servers can start using more than one core (even the load), and fixing the other errors/bugs, I think COD online will massively take off.

As far as the WoP, it's strange as they were advertising (at least initially) as a massive online experience, that it would fall really short. Either way, if the beta is free it's definitely worth trying out. I have my doubts, but you never know.

your server and connection can handle it but the players will also have to have a STOUT rig/connection as 256 players is ALOT of information for a PC to process .

Well yeah :) (in the future me hopes!)

But I don't think they need an overly stout connection though. It seems to me, at least in my testing, that the maximum upload/download connection at any given time regardless of the number of players is always less than 70kb to the client. The server with 30 people on it, is only streaming around 1.5 to 2mb of upload as well (with download a bit lower than that)..

If it is as fun as world of tanks* than this could be really interesting.
