i thought the same thing..lol but i think they are left down for safety reasons during initial tests

In the first flights I believe they are left down in case they have a failure and can't lower them again.

that's correct.

Funnily enough they had a landing gear locking failure on one of the first flights, which led them to re-design a part of the lock mechanism to avoid the problem again.

Performance problems aside, it was beautiful engineering...
You got to believe, half of the German scientists and engineers were aware of his insane goals, and played a hand in his technological downfall, even though they could have had the upper in advancements...

It's funny, but in a way, the shape still looks quite modern. It's something in the design, but I can't place it.
