Key guide? To map your controls? Yes.
We're all awaiting a patch. It should download automatically when available
Sounds like you have to map your controller(s) in the controls setup. Also axes

I'm new to Steam myself but it hasn't caused me any issues yet (apart from the minor annoyance of resetting automatic updates to on whenever i exit from a game).

The reason there's no key guide is that the amount of controls is increased over what we had in IL2. There are now controls for magnetos, fuel tank selector switches, bomb release sequence devices and so on, which makes the total number of keys needed quite high.

Most people use a mix of keyboard/stick button commands for the commands they need to use most frequently and then use the mouse clickable cockpit to influence the rest.

In other words, what is a good keyboard setup for me might be a terrible one for you and as such, apart from the most rudimentary of settings there is no all-encompassing default setting. Which means, there's not a default key guide.

What i did was just open my options in the sim, go through all available commands and map the keys/buttons i wanted to whichever functions i considered time-critical. For the rest (things that i will only use once when starting the mission and once when i land and turn off the engine) i use the mouse click function on the cockpit switches.

As for patches now, Steam can do it automatically:
1)Log in to Steam and click on the "Library" button to see your games listing.
2) Right-click on the Cliffs of Dover icon and a a pop-up menu will appear, select properties.
3) Within the properties, you'll see an option to enable/disable automatic updates.

I have it turned off because i usually back-up the sim before updating, but most people have it turned on. In any case, whenever you want to check for updates all you have to do is make sure the auto-update function in Steam for the particular game is enabled.

If there's a new patch available, Steam will start downloading it and you'll see a progress bar on the bottom of the Steam window. You can pause the download if you want and i think it also pauses automatically if you are running the game (useful in case you want to have a quick flight, instead of waiting for it to finish first).

Finally, to get your game controllers configured you need to use the in-game options menu just like you configure your keyboard commands. On the top of the screen there are some title tabs, one is labeled "keys" and the others "axis". Select "axis" to calibrate and configure your analog controllers (stick/throttle/rudder/etc).

Even if it appears that some functions are mapped, it is advisable to remap them. Windows assigns separate IDs to the various USB devices and this is reflected in your games too: if the default setting the sim installs with "thinks" that the joystick is on ID #1 and your windows has assigned it ID #3, then your joystick won't work in the game because the game is looking for a non-existent stick.

By editing the in-game options you can overcome this, because when you re-map a function the game "listens" for a command and "intercepts" it the moment you move the stick. This allows you to map whichever analog controller you need to whichever function you want, without having to manually assign IDs to your stick/throttle/pedals via the windows options.

No its not you, everyone feels this way. But I think most of us have faith that they're working on it. (Their track record is epic/heroic) The game has huge potential if you can allow it some patience and hope...

I personally think Ubisoft and their insane epilepsy filter really mucked things up extraordinarily. All of it was done last minute too. Maybe Im wrong...who knows what is really going on. Based on the track record, I'd invest in anything they do

I think with upcoming patches and patience the game will be great. I've already seen many glimmers of awesome in there....just dont set your hopes up to high "out the box," I am focusing on the the areas that do work and I'm having a lot of fun for now. (Stay clear of London! Its not ready for business!)Cheers
