Those damn' Jerries are coming across the Channel again, but happily a merry band of Fighter Boys are awaiting them...

I know I should try something new and exciting in every new vid I make, but sometimes it feels great to just go up in an old acquaintance: the ever so beautiful Spitfire.

Can't say I was very daring this time round, but hey, there is a war going on, and no shame in going for the easy kill, especially when it will be your fifth... :)

For the first time in any of my movies I paid just a little bit attention to the workings of the gunsight. And, yes, it certainly works! - There is a big difference to shooting at proper convergence and just spraying and praying as I've done till now. It is a great feeling to see the bullets hit home, with lots of pyrotechnics to show for it. Definitely one of the more satisfying parts of this sim.

The Spit is a thoroughbred, so even in my incompetent hands it becomes quite dangerous. It is clear that as a guns' platform it doesn't possess the uncanny stability of the Hurricane, but then again, in the Spit it is a good deal easier to maneuver yourself into a position where you can actually bring your guns to bear, so that certainly compensates for the lesser stability.

Enjoy this one, and as always, comments very welcome!

Nice to see the DM of the 109 with one gear down, not flown CoD enough to notice that kind of stuff :(

hey freycinet, great video as always.
I just got the game last week and i'm still figuring stuff out.

One question about the convergence.

@1:25 of ur video, is it true for the current state of the game, we need to set our convergence on all aircrafts to twice of what we want to get the distance we need? so your convergence in this video was actually 200yards. Correct?

@ 9:25 of ur video where you flamed the 109's engine, is that 109 at half the distance of ur convergence because at that moment the wingtip of the 109 was touching the rim of ur sight. I'm not critisizing the way you shoot and aim, just out of curiosity. ;) If the 109 is right at ur convergence, would its wing be touching the horizontal bars at the middle of the sight?

Another question unrelated to this video: how to adjust the distance and base of 109's gunsight? There isn't a dial I can turn so far I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Thanks!

I love those witty comments. it's like adding a simple plot to a combat senario. definitely makes the videos more interesting to watch.

Yes.

Yes, they should just be the width of the space between the horizontal bars, so I was closer when I finally flamed him.

I just use the mouse on-screen as you see in the beginning of the video. Clicking at the dials at the base of the gunsight.

Lolo,

Only british gunsights have the adjustment.

And yes, in the current state of the game, if you wanted your aim to be at 200yds, then you'd set the range on the gunsight to 400yds.

hey cheesehawk,
how do I know how far away my target is then by looking into 109's gunsight? Is it set automatically to my convergence value as I input to the loadout menu?
thanks!

German gunsights only have one setting. I'm not entirely sure if it's calibrated based on the Spit or Hurricane (i guess they have fairly similar wingspans anyway), but it's a case of "when Spitfire/Hurricane wings touch the bars target is X meters away", where X would be a suitable value ( not more 200-300 meters i guess).

From that point on it's approximations by the pilot: double the wingspan for a twin engined bomber so that when wings touch the bars it should be about 2X meters away, and so on.

The easiest way to test it would be to make a short, airstart mission in the FMB with your 109, a Spit and a Hurricane. Set them to have low fuel and no ammo so they won't fight back and run for home, enable icons and fly behind them until you see their wings touch the bars, then check the icons for the range. Or wait for one of the guys with technical documentation or knowledge on the Revi sight to pop in and answer it for us

EDIT: Actually i couldn't resist so i flipped through Flea's datasheets and checklists and the answer is there on page 10. The revi is a 100 mil gunsight, which means that a target with a wingspan of 10 meters fills the gunsight (wingtips touch the bars) when it's 100 meters away. The Spitfire has a wingspan of 11.23 meters and the Hurricane sizes up at 12.19, so neither of them exactly fits the gunsight. I guess they went for the approximate rule that "fighters have about 10 meters of wingspan".

According to Flea's excellent document, when a Spit fills the sight it's 112 meters away, for the Hurricane it's 122 meters (as you can see, these numbers are approximately ten times the quoted wing span). In other words, since absolute precision is impossible anyway, just keep in mind that when they fill the sight they are tad further than 100 meters and you'll be ok. So if you have a convergence of 200 meters you should shoot when their wingspan is about half the distance from bar to bar.

Eklund comes to our rescue with a nice little visual guide as to how we should understand the German sight:

I didn't look too much into the German sight, though, so I cannot confirm this myself. And isn't there anything at all we can do to adjust the bars in that sight?

robtek

There is no need to adjust,

A german soldier with a technical manual and a order can do anything!!!

Why make it complicated?

IIRC the ring ist set that a plane with 10m wingspan is 100m away... ?
If this fit the game, i also dont know..........

and the german one was not adjustable like the english one.

Hi guys. The count is simple. (Size of object) X (How many times does he fit into the circle) x 10= it grants the distance of the object. Later, they put 1° marks onto the Revi, because of the facilitate of the counting.

You need this book. Here in detail, and more things are written: Horrido - Des Jagers Schiessfibel (GER) (www.pumaszallas.hu/elmelet-tankonyvek/Horrido-Des_Jagers_Schiessfibel_GER.zip). This is the original, german book.

I did not find English translation on the internet (with the Hungarian i guess you can't do nothing ). Many Years ago, I downloaded an English translate from the www.mission4today.com, which TX-Gunslinger wrote in 2004. I did not find the link of this, but I put the file on our side, from here you may download it: Horrido - Des Jagers Schiessfibel (ENG) - TX-Gunslinger (www.pumaszallas.hu/elmelet-tankonyvek/Horrido-Des_Jagers_Schiessfibel_ENG_(TX-Gunslinger).rar)

Of cousre, all of this work in the game.

Very nice work. Clever. You must have already shared this information, but what realism settings are you on as well as video settings? The land details are sharp and the video is very smooth.
Thanks.

All realism is on high, except cockpit always on, because I like to do the fly-by views.

I believe I have video settings all on high, but sorry, I don't remember to well.

All I can say is I can't wait for the 109 F and some auto prop pitch. I've talked to others and they say oh no problem...I'm still blowing engines when I have to fly for my life.

Same here, but I think of it as a learning experience and that with the new CEM skill will set pilots apart from less skilled ones more than just which aircraft they're flying.
Almost anything that promotes skill and is within the realistic realm is good for a sim IMO.
