hey guys.if i set up a mission in full mission builder, the ai planes engage, but soon stop to fight and prefer to fly in formation, even if im at their six or twelve.its pretty boring to have a mission with more than 60 planes, only to have a dogfight which lasts not more than 2minutes. after that you can chase them and shoot one after the ohter down from the skies, without any reaction from them.
it doesnt matter if i set targets for them, they just disengage after a really short time.
is there a way to force them to fight?like in old il2 1946 where the ai fought till death when you set up a quick mission?

I had the same experience while testing the latest patch.

quick dogfight, 6 hurricanes vs E-3's. After 2 minutes I see that the hurricanes decided to fly home in a nice tight formation. I slip in behind them (its like they don't even care) and proceed to down each one without the other reacting. Completely ridiculous.

Here's my theory: make all enemy fighters separate flights containing only one A/C each, and each only 2 waypoints, both "hunting". I'm pretty sure they'll all stick around...

Actually, apart from the fact that they should take evasive action (which they currently don't if they are in "go home mode") it's pretty realistic.

A rather big percentage of engagements that day were like that, a couple of kills and probables/damaged for each side and then breaking off because of being separated and not wanting to push one's luck. Many were even inconclusive, since pilots would place first priority on survival and second on completing the mission objectives and not going off against every single target present in the area.

In fact, the "fight till the end" mentality of the IL2 AI was exactly what the majority of the offline fliers has been complaining about in the old series of sims.

Apart from their lack of evasive action when RTBing i actually prefer the new way of doing things, so i think that when it's fine tuned a bit it will be a keeper.

That being said, i know people might want to have some intense dogfight action once in a while and i'm all for extra options to suit as many people as possible. So, maybe it could be selectable under realism options to suit everyone.

Yesterday, I managed to catch up to a pack of 109s who had shot down 3 Hurris over Hawkinge, me in the Spitfire Ia. There were 6 of them making a bee line back to France, with one trailing behind about 500m behind the main group. I took some shots at the tail-end charlie, and was surprised that not only did he go evasive, but the rest of the 109s reacted, jinking and turning back as if to see what was going on. I checked in FMB and they were on a waypoint with action = escort, so maybe that effects the AI behavior; otherwise it may have changed with the latest beta patch. I got the mission from campaign_de: 87 0816 Hawkindge Attack.mis is anyone is interested in checking it out.

this kind of behavior should not be offered as an option, but instead should be a (dynamic) behavioral property of AIs.

Ie, most of them should not stay and fight to the death (unless in exceptional situations, like in no way of escape, or not enough fuel to reach friendly frontline, and so on), as in real life, while some of them, as in real life too, should be proud and stubborn pilots who once engaged won't disengage (and will even disobey disengaging orders) until the enemy aircraft, or their own one, is fallen.

well i should have added that i know that its not realistic what im asking for.and i appreciate the new way,the ai is supposed to behave.but when there are more than 60 enemy planes heading at me(a single plane), i expect at least a challenge to survive.normally it should be a fact of beeing dead in about 2minutes.
but with the new ai behaviour, after this beta patch(i think) i survive every time.
for two minutes some planes fight and then they fly in formation and ignoring me, even when i shoot one after the other down.thats boring.

Yes this is strange behaviour, It seems that the AI focuses on the next waypoint i.e. landing and they ignore enemy fire, sometimes they react other times just fly straight forward. Easy kills, this is not what we had in the IL-2 1946. So I hope that the AI will be changed regarding this.
