View Full Version : How's the optimizing coming along?

Per the title, (and I apologize I haven't been keeping up) but how is the optimizing of the sim's code coming along? Are quad cores being efficiently utilized now? System memory? Vram? Are stutters cured. I need to buy a new processor, probably the 2500K. I read here some time ago that the sim likes VRAM. Is 1.256gb of ram adequate, or low? Any performance gains from overclocking beyond 3.3ghz on a processor?
Meanwhile, i'll do a search. ;)

You can see my specs in my sig and I run it quite fine!
Quad-core support allows for some faster terrain generation I read somewhere. It's definately improved a lot. I have almost no stutter-problems not even over london and mostly smooth FPS sometimes playable FPS, but not smooth :)

S~ Strike! Thanks for the update. :D I see in your sig that you have the GTX 570. Should I assume that you don't have a VRAM shortage. I also see that you have an SSd. Is that just for your operating system? I'm still trying to formulate my system specs.

SSD for Windows 7 yes :) boots quite fast!
GTX 570 is ~1,3gb and sufficient to play CloD if you can sacrifice a few graphical options. I still get the impression that I'm running the game well beyond the communitys average graphics without much trouble. The idea is to buy another 570 once the price drops and run it SLI with 2,6GB total Vram :)

There's a thread here about something called RamDisk which means you allocate a part of your RAM as a disk where you can put all or some of the CLOD files for faster loading etc.
The conclusion was that it didn't help with framerates. I and other with me interpret that as that a SSD disk won't do anything for the game.
When it comes to VRAM I read about someone who said CLOD took max 1,5GB of his 2GB. I dunno. I woudn't go less than 1,5.
Gonna check usage myself (got 2GB) but dunno which program to use.
When running W7 and quad core you can see in task manager the usage of each core. When I launch CLOD I can see how it uses all four cores.
Neither one goes to max but they are all used.
Note, I didn't have this computer before the patch that balanced the load on all cores so can't say if anything changed.

I run it on a Gigabyte 560TI SOC, with everything at max, and it runs flawlessly, without any microstutters or anything. The system is in my sig.

Just a heads up, running two cards in SLI does not double your VRAM, you have the same amount of VRAM as a single card. Both cards keep exactly the same data in VRAM at the same time, your VRAM capacity does not double. If you run a single monitor fine with a single GTX570 then two will increase your FPS but higher resolutions, especially triple monitors kille the GTX570 due to hitting the VRAM limit.
If you notice your FPS dropping due to hitting a VRAM wall with a single GTX570 you will still hit the exact same VRAM wall with two of them.

Performance is fine with my system. A lot has already been done by dev's and I can even run it at 2.6 Ghz and still it runs with high fps. Up to 4 cpu cores are now used. However, if you like to run everything with max details I'd recommend a 1.5 or 2 Gb vid card.

Good info everyone. Thanks a lot. A few more ?s First, yes, it's true that SLi does not double the amount of available ram, but I sure wish it did!
As for the SSD; other than quicker boot time, is there any benefit to a combat sim like CLOD? So far as I've been able to read (on tech sites) there hasn't been shown to be any benefit, but they don't test using CLOD. ;) Seems that Ramdisk isn't much help either. Does that mean the sim needs even more optimizing to reduce stutters? What bottleneck causes the stutters? Are stutters also linked to the trees and the cities, and so can be called a "rendering issue"?
Adonys, it's impressive that you can run everything maxed out with a 1gb vram video card. I'll have to read up on that GPU.
Fall_Pink? I will try to configure towards as many features turned on as possible, so it's good to know that a quad will get utilized more efficiently. As for Vram, I think a 2gb gpu will give me a bit of breathing room in the short term.
thanks all! Great feedback, and sharing.

Just a heads up.
TY  I think maybe I'll go for a GTX 590 then when the prices are dropped on that, or sell my old GTX 570 HD and use the money to upgrade to a 580, we'll see :P

Shadows off = less stutter which would indicate that micro stutter is a rendering issue.

590 is a SLI card and has the same limitations. The ultimate solution today is aiming at 2 or 3 gtx580 with 3GB vram each in SLI. But in 6 months things will be much different as usual.

I also use a 560ti with 1 Gig although mine's an Asus. I also run with everything on maximum and get smooth frames. I have vsync on as I find that stops the props flickering and over the sea I am mostly getting 60fps overland 40 fps upwards and over London mid to high 30s or more.

Flyby,
SDD and ramdisk won't help CoD if you already have enough internal memory (>= 4Gb) and the stutters are largely game engine (and sometimes sound) related.
A faster cpu or one with more than 4 cores currently does not help much. A core i5 2500 (or AMD equivalent) is more than enough for this game right now.
A fast video card however seems to help a lot, especially with all things turned on (grass and roads, high land shading etc, etc). This seems one of those games that eats video mem. like no other game before. 1 Gb can be enough, but if you can buy a card with 2 Gb for a few euro's more, I'd choose that one.

What about CLOD bogs your system down, especially those with the 560Ti? Smooth frames over London, with how many aircraft?
Fall_Pink, how can a 1gb GPU be enough if this sim is VRAM hungry? I'm not clear on what you mean. Are you suggesting that some options have to be set to a lower level? I'm asking what aspects of gameplay are hardest on VRAM. I used to think something like flying low over London at high speed might bring things to a crawl. But of course I'm just guessing. Meanwhile the AMD 6970 still looks good to me,
thanks all for the great feedback! :D

1 Gb is enough if you don't set graphic options to very high/orginal but just to high and lower some other stuff. Buildings details, roads and grass should also be lowered or turned off, but even then CoD still looks very good.
If you like to have all graphicoptions turned on and set to max, I'd recommend a fast 2 Gb vid card, 4 to 6 Gb ram and a reasonably high end quad core cpu e.g. i5 2500 or AMD equiv.

Thanks for the clarification. I suppose even a fast GPU with 2gb of VRAM doesn't have much headroom left when running CLOD with most vram-hungry options set very high (even with a very good CPU and 6gb of system ram)?

I've got a evga gtx 560 ti SC and I have to turn things like shadows off and lower others to get decent frame rates, how are you doing it?
