I tried running COD on a system with the following specs:
Core 2 @ 3.2GHz
4GB ram
9800 GT

With all settings set to low except model left at high the game was very playable only over water (35-50 fps). Once over land it turned into a slide show even with shadows turned off and settings at low.

Sorry for the late reply....it took some time to dig out the components from the archive;)

You will definitely need more RAM. This game is more CPU/RAM intensive than GPU. Running performance monitor I see my CPU running 50/75% with spikes of near 100% and my RAM is somewhere aroung 3.75GB useage.

With that said I run in the 30-50 fps range at 1680x1050 set to medium, aa off, vsync off, ssao off, shadows off, land shading/building detail/forest/ground detail all to low. I do have Nvidia console set to 4xAA and force Vsync on along with some other Anistropic settings set to override or enhance the launcher.exe.

If you can stand dropping your resolution some you will get much better performance than I currently do. I was running 1280x800 and had 50+ fps but did not like the way things looked.

When the latest retail patch came out I was able to increase my resolution and have stable and acceptable frames.

Im using same cpu [e8400 3 ghz]
4 gig of ram and a gigabyte hd4850 [soon to be 6000 series]
The game runs smooth as silk at 1600 res wide but may slow if you turn anti aliasing on.. i dont use it.. my eyes are crap so what the point.
In conclusion
Cod4 mw2 runs nice
as does cod5 world at war and cod 4mw

crysis runs nice too in 1600 res

I say res because my desktop is 1920/1200. i run menofwar/rt/as at 1920
as jojovtx said. your ram is blowing it
But SAF badland seems to have a prob.. my system never lags on cod4mw at 1680
fraps gives 30+fps in all situations

I think its because i could buy his system and not blink
5000 enough..maybe 10
i spend money on my helocopter.. now THATS a bitch

I think you just need 4gigRam and win7 to run the game with your rig, it wont be spectacular but it will run.

My rig
win7 home premium 64bit
X64-based PC
intel Core 2 Quad cpu Q8300 @ 2.50GHz(4CPU)
4 Gig RAM
DX 11
NVIDIA Geforce GTS 250 (1 Gig RAM)
Saitek AV8R joystick
TrackIRv5

I'm running it on a laptop with a mid-range i5 CPU, and an nVidia 330M. I get an average of 15-20fps with everything on low except models High and effects Medium. When you're shooting someone from up close, it goes down to 10fps.

It's playable. Barely, but playable. Definitely not gorgeous ;) Done a couple bombing runs with a Blenheim and actually shot down a 109 and a bunch of AI bombers over at the Syndicate server.

--- edit ---

Oh, the resolution is 1280x720!

Thanks for the replies chaps. Will up grade the RAM to 4 GB.
And give it a go, while waiting for prices to come down on the high end cards

I'm running a system similar to you but with 6g of ram: -

Asus P5B m/b
E6600 core 2 Duo @ 2.4g
6G Ram
9600Gt 1 gig

I'm getting frame rates of 20--25fps over land, 30--35fps over water with the following settings: -

AA= off
Mod Detail= High
Blds= Medium
Land=med
Forest= Low
Visual Eff= High
Texture= High
Damage= Med
Bld Ammount= low
Shading= low

Grass= off
Shadows= off
Roads= on

Still getting micro stutters, but this should disappear as the game gets more optimised.

It is certainly playable on a low specs system, my advice is go ahead and buy it you won't regret it.

you really don't need a "high" end card .. try a med eng card .. i have a radeon xfx 5770 hd 1 gig ddr5 card at @ $120 CDN works great

just remember every thing you upgrade only works as good as the last thing you upgraded you can have 12 gigs of ram and a pentium 4 single core ..you'll still run slow ..4 gigs dual core 6 gigs quad core etc good luck

I think mines at 2.8mhz but i'm running everything at max and getting great fps and no shutter ..due to the video card change ..my last card was a 9800gt 1 gig and the frames were skippy

Dropping the texture detail to medium should go a long way to eliminating the microstutters.
I also have a 1gb. card and it helped when I lowered the texture detail. The tradeoff is a loss of some eye candy, so I suppose it's a question of what one values more.
