I actually prefer the prop right now, at least it looks more 3D-ish.

The prop in the original il2 is like a thin disc if u look from the side, which doesn't resemble the real thing at all.

No no, they mean that what they did to the propeller for epilepsy (on top of the epilepsy filter), has been removed, so that if you disable the epilepsy filter, the prop are not affected anymore.

The 3D look doesn't change. Indeed much better than original IL-2.

I wonder if you can turn it off without turning the epilepsy filter on?

Now I wish I had figured out how to record ingame video. LOL

If I knew how to, I would.

Recording from a track with the game's built-in video utility won't work, because engine RPMs are still seriously bugged with that thing.

ARGH
05-21-2011, 04:55 AM
only tested with spitfire. prop does not work well at all. at high rpm's it dissapears again and is only visible when it spazzes out, which does not seem right to me. i expected a similar prop from IL1946 or wings of prey, a constant spinning disc that is soothing to stare at. this prop we got now is either buggy or complete trash.

and i was so excited for this:confused::confused::confused:

ARGH
05-21-2011, 05:33 AM
tested the bf109 and same lousy results. i am uploading a high def youtube video now showing the bf109 and spit's prop.

i used fraps and with max graphics settings. what i noticed was that when enabled fraps recording the prop graphics change and that it does not spaz out at high rpm's. it is simply invisible as before. when i disabled fraps recording the prop starts to become visible again at high rpm's but ONLY because of it spazzing out. the spaz looks exactly like the video shows at low engine rpm's where it looks like some kind of sun glare has hit the prop for a split second but the difference is that in low rpm's the prop does not spaz out. it's hard to explain.

vid up shortly.

ARGH

with fraps video record it pretty much eliminates the high rpm spazzing and because of this it looks like the prop before the patch, which looks like crap:confused:

Sauf

pretty sure from what I can see that your "spazzing" is just the sunlight reflecting off the prop

ARGH

when recording with fraps the spaz stops. the moment i stop recording with fraps the spaz at high rpm's starts back up.

White Owl

I bet the spaz happens when you have higher framerates. That would explain why it disappears when you run fraps. Try V-sync.

I can't make a vid cause it won't capture the effect.
But here is a screen shot. At high RPM it's exactly the same. Completely invisible in front of clouds.

I want it to be realistic and apparently at high RPM a real prop is just a blurred disc with no sense of spinning. But even when it works it think it's is too light and barely visible.

I haven't tried it yet (updated yesterday with the hotfix but i went out for the night) but from what i hear it sounds like they did a realistic job on it.

The blurry spinning blades that were seen in IL2 are definitely not realistic if we want it to appear the way it's viewed with a human eyeball and not through a camera. In reality props are more visible as blurry discs/blades at low RPM and almost disappear completely at high RPM, that's the reason many props come with painted tips on the blades to assist in determining their radius when they are turning.

That is unless there's sunlight glinting off the prop.In that case it can indeed cause a strobe effect if the combination of RPM and the light's angle of incidence is suitable.
I distinctly remember a real life pilot on this forum saying that one of the first things they teach you in flight school is how NOT to focus your eyes on the prop to prevent epileptic seizures (in case you have a condition and don't know it yet).

So it sounds they did a pretty good job on it in the sim. I'll go out and test this shortly to see it for myself.

Blackdog; when you say you will go out and test, I hope you don't mean to suggest that you will be testing whether you are epileptic or not....:o

I'd love to see a video showing the new prop effects. Considering the recent graphical advances in the patches (or, rather, attempts as some might say) it's nice to see the sim progressing this way.

I have to agree with some of the above posters, and the devs.

I spent last Saturday at the annual Planes of Fame airshow, which is mostly composed of warbirds, and this game seems to have done the props perfectly. (Note: I don't have the game yet, waiting for US release (yes I know about JustFlight)) When viewed head on, the props are invisible to barely-visible, and viewed from the side they're solid black ellipses, just like in all the screenshots and videos I've seen here.

And yes, there were plenty of examples for me to work off of. (Ignore the F-15)

Hahahah, no, definitely not testing if i can have a self-induced seizure, just testing the new prop effects :-P

I flew a few sorties in QMB and to be honest with you the change is very well done. It's definitely noticeable under the right conditions (low RPM and/or a light source aligned behind you) but it's also discreet, definitely not overdone. In fact, i think that the effect is so subtle that it could probably be lost in the youtube compression.

Hmmm, what we really need, is the light to reflect in the propellar disc. A feature that doesn't seem to be modelled in CloD (is in WoP, but like so many other things in that game, ridicolously overmodelled).
This light-effect, is especially present in daytime, from the pilot/cockpit view.
See the Dauntless from around 0:14 sec to 0:16 sec and then again the f-6 from 1:08 sec to 1:12 sec. and you'll know of what I'm talking about...

This new hollywood prop effect must be the most stupid thing ever introduced... You don't friggin see the prop from inside the cockpit of a real plane like that. Period.

A camera taking a series of still shots at 25-30 fps sees those effects, but not the human eye! Just open you computer chassis and have a look at one of you fans spinning at some 1000 rpm. See anything accept a slight reduction of sight that is like looking through a thin light grey plastic sheet? Did not think so.

Is there an ini-file switch for us real pilots to turn this crap off? No I don't what to enable anti-epilepsy which will remove that but also a lot of other effects I want, and impact the fps.

In real life, the propeller is almost invisible at full RPM; you can just barely see it if you're deliberately looking for it. Very much like what's currently modeled. The closer you are, the harder it is to see. An airplane 100 yards away has a more clearly visible propeller than what's 5 feet in front of you.

In real life, the propeller starts to become more visible and individual blades can be seen rotating at lower RPM. Very much like what's currently modeled. For more perfect visuals, I'd say the prop disc should remain mostly invisible until RPM drops to around 1200 RPM or so... but still, this is a very small issue. I'm just so very glad the props don't look like IL-2 1946. Those were terrible.

Yes, I'm a real pilot. Aircraft mechanic too, so I've done my share of standing right next to spinning propellers even closer than the pilots ever get.

I'll admit I see a random flickering effect in the prop disc for just a split second every once in a while; that's not very realistic. I'm not sure whether it's a bug or a feature... either way it's a small enough issue to ignore, IMO.

Your video shows the prop effect through the eyes of a camera, which is not the same as what you'd see as the pilot. Unfortunately (as has been posted many times), you simply cannot use a film to judge what it should look like.

I'm not talking about visible propellars, but of the light-reflexions that sometimes occur, when the light comes from a certain angle...

Aircraft mechanic.

I'll admit I see a random flickering effect in the prop disc for just a split second every once in a while.

Totally agree with you White Owl

Aircraft mechanic here too. I think the prop visuals in CloD are quite good, like you say, just perhaps lower the RPM for where it starts fading out completely so that it's less visible at lower RPM's. Idle however should be fairly easy to see :)

Also the only time I can see a prop blade IRL is when moving my eyeballs. The human eye is very quick and if you move your eyes the relative speed between the prop-blade and eyesight decreases in the time period your eyeball uses to shift direction. In this miniature window you'll see the colour and shape of the prop blade that is traveling in the same direction as your vision. Try it out the next time you guys see a helicopter, it's even easier to do there. Try focusing on a blade tip and move your eyes after it. You'll see the blade "pop out" every time your eyeball shifts direction.

I've flown a cessna with an instructor for about 3 hours and never seen the blade when piloting the plane in air. On the ground however during startup and taxi, yes, it's visible, but only if you're looking for it :) Forget about youtube or videos. It's just like saying for a PC sim you want the monitors to flicker ingame, but that's just something that happens because of the cameras FPS versus the monitors refresh rate.

Have turned on vsync but no difference. I'm running on a 120hz monitor if that could have anything to do with it... Had to turn on the anti epilepsy filter to get rid of the damn rotating prop disc at all rpm. I get an average of 45 fps in the bomber attack over London mission on very high settings with anti epilepsy on so I will have to go with that until they fix the new prop or give us an ini file option to disable it...

The new prop effect is great (I've been around plenty of RL props), but it should be independent of frame rate, and dependent only on RPM's. Currently, if you get into a graphically intensive scene, the prop will flicker at regular intervals, despite a constant RPM. Move away from that scene, and the prop will smooth out again, ergo it seems tied somehow to framerate.
