View Full Version : Crashing at Launcher.exe
Hi all
Purchased CoD today and I am having some issues getting it running. Launcher.exe is crashing. I have tried the following:
1. Validation of files in steam.
2. Uninstall, reboot and redownload... manually ran all exe's in redist, rebooted and then ran the game.
3. Updated my graphics driver.
4. Manually downloaded the .Net 4.0 client package from the Microsoft web site and installed that.
5. Up to date with patches, and installed new graphics card drivers.
6. Directx update via the web installer.
One thing that I am noticing is that with the AVG false positive, there is a rendobj.dll mentioned that should be in the CoD folder. I do not have this file. The only DLL that I have in the same directory as Launcher.exe is launchergdf.dll, the rest are in sub directory(ies) of the parts directory.
Would I perhaps be missing some files? Any other suggestions welcome..
Thats weird, when I first installed CoD (like many with AVG) the rendobj.dll file came up as a virus and AVG deleted it. Updated AVG and no more problems but now I have used the search option for that file and it doesn't exist. ....
Not sure where that file is supposed to be located or even if it is used anymore after the official patch (I seem to recall it was mentioned in the update notes as the 'AVG false positive issue being fixed'). Best take a look at the official patch notes in your CoD folder regards that file.
Post your system specs, OS, DX version, screen res, etc, I would use the Steam 'verify cache' to get CoD back to the official patch and get it launching with that - then apply the later Beta patches.

I think rendobj.dll was part of the original drm.The drm was removed in the 1st patch.
Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the DRM angle.
I verified cache again and downloaded the 1.00.14072 Beta patch, but got the same issue.
Any other idea's?
A couple of extracts from dxdiag output...

You are installing the wrong beta patch.
Once the game is up to date through Steam the next update is the Beta patch 14413 (May 4)
Go here to download the properly version :

Thanks for the tip Buchon. I have tried that patch as well. No dice.

Mop, I notice that windows is not up to date...service pack 1 hasn't been installed.
Yours - Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.110408-1633)
Mine - Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110408-1631)
Grab the service pack and install then go here (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx) and download the .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool and run it (select the .Net 4 Client option) and when it finishes it'll produce a report, scroll down to the very bottom line to see if .NET 4 is setup correctly.
Hope this helps

Shoot!!!! Uninstalling the files from the redist directory during one of my reinstallations nerfed SP1, or windows identification of it... It's already reinstalled....
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110408-1631)
I did run the tool you recommended, just re-ran it then and everything seems fine.
Thanks for picking that up Goanna... just sent a support email and now I need to send them the updated Dxdiag.txt :)

What happens if you go to windows update, do you get the option to install SP1?

Not since I reinstalled it :P I reinstalled it yesterday, immediately after I noticed it had been nerfed. I just forgot to do another dxdiag.txt.

And I should pay more attention to writing posts..... :P Thanks for your help Goanna.
I am taking it up with support, but if there are any idea's that I have missed..
Fired up the debugger and got this error message on a first change exception....
"This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms."
Fix is here, but use "false" instead of "0"
