Closing down during fist campaign mission

I have had several goes of starting the UK campaign but as soon as I get near the bombers the screen goes black and reverts to windows. On pulling up the task manager it shows memory used well in excess of 2 Gb.

Was this a common problem prior to the last 2 beta patches?

I don't have any of the patches installed and have done the clear cache bit in Steam.
