I've got this game since it first came out. I've been waiting for it for many years, I even bought the collectors edition! My old graphics card was a Radeon HD4870 and it was barely enough to run the game. That is why I bought a new one, the Radeon HD6870. This card can run the game almost at its highest levels! I think I need to upgrade my CPU next, but that is for the future.

The thing is, I get random crashes in the game. These crashes can happen under varying circumstances. Sometimes during a heavy dogfight with tracers and parts of multiple aircraft flying around (over London) and sometimes when I quietly fly alone over the countryside. It starts with a chilling noise, coming from my computer. I can only describe the noise as something inbetween grinding and chirping. After a second or two, the signal to the monitor is lost and the sound from my speakers gets scrambled. It sounds a little bit like this: http://vimeo.com/646687

After that, the sound stops completly and since the screen hasn't got a signal at all, I can only push the reset button of my PC. No error messages are shown. I can press the "esc" button in the few seconds before my screen is lost. This gets me in the menu and the grinding noise stops instantly. I think this is because the game doesn't need to render anything anymore. After a few seconds, I can go back to flying like nothing has happened. I downloaded the free AMD systems monitor and both my CPU and GPU are going to 100% in a very short period of time during the grinding noise. (seen by quickly pressing ALT-TAB) The crashes seem to be getting worse if I set the video options higher in the game. So, it is definitly video related, altough I don't think it is Il-2 CoD itself.

I haven't tried any other games with this new vid card yet. Il-2 CoD is by far the most demanding game I own. I downloaded the latest drivers for my new vid-card and installed themn twice allready. I will now post my system specs and DXdiag, I hope you guys can help me!

Had the same issue.
Been having BSOD and Launcher exe stopped working a lot. Been trying to reinstall, check integrity of files and all, nothing helped.
I then checked all my driver versions. Used a tool, driver something, can't remember.
Anyway, it showed I still had some leftovers from old drivers, sound, video and throttles/joystick stuff. Deleted the whole bunch, had to restart in safe mode and deleted some more, after that installed all drivers fresh.
Solved the problem.

Good luck

If you have a on-board sound card ensure you disable it in the BIOS when running a plug in sound card.

Random thought, you probably did this anyway.

i'am doubtful about the quality of this "blackpower"

I've re-installed the drivers of my graphic card and the soundblaster, they all came fresh from the internet. I re-installed DirectX11 (redist), wich I also downloaded from the internet. I disconnected everything from the PSU that was not essential (DVD drive, extra fans and stuff) But this did not have any influence on the problems. Just before the black-out, I get a grinding/chirping noise from the computer. This comes from the PSU I think. When I press the ESC key quickly, the blackout is postponed and the fan of the CPU is going wild. With the free program "MSI afterburner" I can monitor the GPU usage and temp. from withint Il-2 COD. It seems that COD uses the HD6870 GPU for 80 to 100% and the temp is always anywhere around 65 to 70 degrees C. No abnormal spiking in FPS, GPU usage are temperature is observed, prior to the blackout.

Try disabling all sound cards.

If it is not sound, update chipset drivers, maybe even bios, reinstall .net from MS site.

Monitor CPU cores and motherboard temps.

Monitor PSU output with some software or borrow another PSU from a friend. Try running with an older videocard to reduce PSU load or underclock your video card and CPU for testing purposes.

The program to clean drivers is called drivercleaner iirc.

Try running some modern video benchmarks with 100% videocard load.

You have to pay for drivercleaner pro nowadays :(

I monitored the output voltage of the PSU with a multimeter. It fell to 10.5V (instead of 12!) shortly before a crash happens. I even had a crash without the GPU strained at all! Less then 50%. I also used MSI Afterburner to increase my fan speed for certain GPU temperatures. But nothing helps. It is sunday now, and in my little corner of the world, all shops are closed. I will be ordering a new PSU online and in the meantime, I will use my old HD4870, because I hate crashes. If anyone is interested, I made a thread in the UBI forum that could help someone else with the same problem: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m/9621013229

Thanks for replying! I downloaded a version of Drivercleaner Pro wich was still for free. In windows eventlog, there are Kernell power errors. But that is probably due to the fact that I always have to push the reset button on my PC.

We'll see what the new PSU does to my 3D card. The current PSU is a few years old. If this still doesn't work out, I am going to try for a refund of my 3D card or something.

Kernel error? Sudden powerloss maybe?
Google them.
You wouldn't be the first one to suffer from overloaded PSU, due to the load Cod on GPU creates.

PSUs age, quite fast if you run them at them at max load actually...

The PSU is from a brand named "blackpower". I can't find it on the internet, but the company is possibly bought by OCZ. It says 580 Watt, but i highly suspect they did not have in mind that one day, 3D accelerator cards would need two PCI-E connectors.

So, I ordered an 850 Watt XFX PSU today. It'll take a while to arrive with easter. So I put in my old HD4870, wich never crashed before. I can do Il-2 1946 with it on the highest settings and postpone my Il-2 COD for a few days.

Hi Platypus,
I've been struggling with sudden CTDs a lot lately...
The "Launcher.exe" especially crashes a lot... without apparent reasons.
I updated almost anything: from bios, chipsets, gpu, sound module, joysticks, even mouse and keyboard but... the game still crashes a lot.
I noticed this though: the first time I load a mission (any mission it seems...) the game loads fine and it's all "fire and sound".
After the first one, crashes can appear randomly...
Really weird.

Cheers

Hey Rickusty, This is very diffrent from the crashes I encountered. My montitor lost a signal, just in the middle of a mission. There was little or no warning beforehand and *BANG* black screen. This is due to a faulty PSU, wich is not able to provide my new ATI Radeon HD6870 with enough electricity. This is very diffrent from your problem. The best is to start a thread on your own. Launcher.exe failures are very common with this game. I'm sure someone can help you, but I don't know about that problem.

Hey I was having the same problem. If I was under load or idle system my computer would freeze and could only rest pc.

I googled after looking in my PC event wiewer at various critical erros. I found a small post on a forum about it and they said to go to your system Registry and change the Dword from 20 to 60

I did and system has not crashed since. I think it is something to do with RAM or something getting to full or the length of commands are two long. Who cares it is fixed.

Start > Run > Regedit.exe

Got to Registry and change the Dword from 20 to 60

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\WMI\Autologger\ReadyBoot

I did not have many critical errors in my eventlog viewer. Only one Kernell_Power_fault, or something similar. But that error was more likely to be generated by me, using the RESET button. I just had a sudden black screen, because the connection between my monitor and my new HD6870 was lost. A powerloss to the HD6870 is most likelyt the cause of this. My PSU is coming of age (and from a brand that is not found on internet), altough on paper, it should be sufficient to power the HD6870. So, I ordered a new one. But with easter, it'll take a couple of days to arrive.

PSU: Blackpower 580W
Motherboard: Asrock A780GXH 128M (AM2+ socket)
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7750
RAM: 4Gb DDR2
Video card: ATI Radeon HD 6870
Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi
DVD player
DVD recorder

My first thing i would look at would be your PowerSupply. It might be requiring more power then your power supply is giving out with your new Video Card. Im saying Power Supply is your issue

I just installed my new PSU!

I also installed my new graphics card (HD6870). The game is totally stable now. No stutters and reasonable FPS. The new PSU is a lot quieter too! I finally finished mission two of the RAF campaign!!
