From the rumours circulating it seems ' anonymous' have been hacking the psn. Parts of the US went down first and it now looks like they are either succeeding or Sony have taken it down to resolve.
The old adage of 'How to win friends and influence people' springs to mind!

Here's what the Sony blog states:

Posted on 21 April by James Gallagher – Blog Manager, SCEE

As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.

Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.

Found a fun thing to do in free flight! Take a hurricane up over Dover, machine guns only, and see how many of the little boats you can explode before dying/getting bored! (Yes, I am easily amused when it comes to exploding things from aeroplanes!)

I'm a little disappointed that there's no more news which only reinforces the 'hack' theory especially with 'maintenance' being cited as the reason for it. Come on it's Easter and probably one of PSN's busiest time. That would be as insane as deciding to have roadworks during the easter break.......

I agree with you Gilly 100% a sit rep more often would be nice . I keep an eye on the ps3 europe blog and apart from the initial external source message which you posted earlier it has been 1 or 2 day fix since the 21st now . I am not asking for an hour by hour update but i would like to know , are they working on a 24hr shift basis or a standard working day to get it fixed . Have they knocked off for the weekend and will fix it Tuesday . Is the maintenance message a standard one used when they turn the network off . According to posters on the blog it went off Thursday morning in th UK at 7am . They are saying the timing is bad as it coincides with a few top game releases and it seems it is a free weekend on xbox live gold ( has Bill Gates been on the fiddle ) . Amazing how many on the blog want compensation for something that is in effect free ( or do we pay in other ways ? price of console ? price of games ? )

It was judgement day on Thursday acording to the Sarah Connor Chronicles. I think Skynet took down PSN. It got confused thinking it was the US missile launch control system. We will be cool though cos Arnie has spare time now he is out of a job and will get us back up soon once he deals with the TX360

Here is the past couple of updates from Sony

23rd April
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

24th April
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available

i´m so sick of this boringness. trainingmode sucks so much cause of the low ai. Either they attack you head on and miss you by 99% or they stumbel in circles in front of you which is easy to follow even if they had a spit under thier ai asses and you got a fw190! it is not compareable to the training you get with other human players. the ai are dolphins and the multiplayer aces are sharks to me. sloughting dolphins isnt right!

to the topic psn:

A) if the onlinenetwork isnt fixed until the next week i will be verry unhappy! but i will never by a 360 cause of that. the online mode is not free. this also means to have a shit disigned controller. i cant handle it. not to mention about the layout on this ugly thing. but i think thats exactly what the creator of this psn interruption wants to aim. see how people throw thier ps3s out of the window.

B) i remember a message i recieved a few month ogo. someone told me that the psn will not longer be free and we`ll have to pay for using the online network. if this happens ps3 is done for me.

BAD NEWS FROM PLAYSTATION.COM

The latest information on the PlayStation Network service outage.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. The following email has been sent to all PSN registrants; please read the help and support FAQ for more information.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at uk.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

Web rumours say 70 million accounts, ie. everyone. I suppose that makes the chances of it being you who gets ripped off very small..
If you say that to open and look at 1 account takes 10 seconds it would still take about 22 years to look at them all!

Did anyone else have weird sign in problems in the week leading up to this?
Auto sign in failed first time every time, but I could sign in 2nd attempt.

I also got an error when I tried to buy something from PS Store, it kept saying my address was wrong and my card was invalid, (pre switch off, obviously) which makes me wonder how long it was before sony noticed that someone got in.

well, parsing 70 milion of personal data file will take few weeks, few days,or maybe few hours using computers, hardly a single man or a team would look at those record by record, that would be an impossible and endless task. Lets says that Its up to the "hacker power and experience". Probably all stolen data ( usually just few record kilobytes for every psn account ) would be used to feed some software bot that probably will send you some mails or extract credit card numbers, address or... whatever. So check up for fraudolent transation on your credit card

Clarifying a Few PSN Points
We wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a point and answer one of the most frequently asked questions today.
There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion 19th April and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly yesterday evening.
For those who were looking there’s also an FAQ with some more on frequently asked questions
Thank you for your continued patience and support

Well thanks a lot Sony, you werent sure so you thought we'll wait a few days just to make sure..... horse, stable door and bolted spring to mind.
This is turning into a PR nightmare for Sony. From what was a 'When can i play again' community suddenly its now 'where the feck is my data, who's got it and what are they likely to do with it'.
Im glad I hadn't updated my Credit Card data when it expired back in February not that gives much comfort.
I see actions being brought against Sony should anyone find that during this 'understanding the scope of the breach' they've been robbed.

@Winny. I changed my auto- login a while back so that I decide if and when I log in. After the problem last year I changed my setup.
As for the store the last purchase I made was on the 15th and had no issues. I do still have credit on there so I would like to know what the current situation is. I did hear a rumour that as part of this hack people did recieve funds into their wallet although I've yet to see anything concrete. That said I think its time for Sony to start a charm offensive to give the 77 million community members some form of tangilble apology for this mess.

I agee Sony should have been a lot more vocal.

The bit I'm pissed off at is that Sony were storing this stuff un-encrypted... Especially Card numbers and passwords.. Even small online companies encrypt that kind of thing.

It'll be interesting to see if they catch whoever did it.

I bet they catch and hire them. This has been a real eye opener. We are all vulnerable to an extent. These jokers sent 70 million of us a message. As for Sony they probably will not say much. In there minds this is a complimetary service, and I am sure somewhere in the terms we accept for this service they have washed their hands. Easter time and Pontius Pilot goes hand in hand. I hope it is quickly resolved, lessons are learned, and we can get a better service back. The real pain in all of this so far has been a loss of the friends that gather daily to enjoy the game. Hopefully see you all soon.

LATEST FROM SONY

First off, we want to again thank you for your patience. We know that the PlayStation Network and Qriocity outage has been frustrating for you. We know you are upset, and so we are taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this outage has caused, and rest assured that we’re going to get the services back online as quickly as we can.

We received a number of questions and comments yesterday and early today relating to the criminal intrusion into our network. We’d like to address some of the most common questions today.

We are also going to continue to post updates to this blog with any additional information and insight that we can over the next few days.

We are reading your comments. We are listening to your suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Thank you.

Q: Are you working with law enforcement on this matter?
A: Yes, we are currently working with law enforcement on this matter as well as a recognised technology security firm and local law enforcement to conduct a complete investigation. This criminal attack against our system and against our customers is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible.

Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

Q: Was my credit card data taken?
A: While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however, that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system.

Q: What steps should I take at this point to help protect my personal data?
A: For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number or other personally identifiable information.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your statements.

Q: What if I don’t know which credit card I’ve got attached to my PlayStation Network account?
A: If you’ve added funds to your PlayStation Network wallet in the past, you should have received a confirmation email from “DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net” at the email address associated with your account. This email would have been sent to you immediately after you added the funds, and will contain the first four digits and last four digits of your credit card number. You can also check your previous credit card statements to determine which card was attached to your PlayStation Network or Qriocity accounts.

Q: When or how can I change my PlayStation Network password?
A: We are working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. We will provide more details about the new update shortly.

Q: Have all PlayStation Network and Qriocity users been notified of the situation?
A: In addition to alerting the media and posting information about it on this blog, we have also been sending emails directly to all 77 million registered accounts. It takes a bit of time to send that many emails, and not every email will still be active, but this process has been underway since yesterday. At this time, the majority of emails have been sent and we anticipate that all registered accounts will have received notifications by April 28th. Consumers may also visit uk.playstation.com/psnoutage and www.qriocity.com for notices regarding this issue. In addition, we have taken steps to disseminate information regarding this issue to media outlets so that consumers are informed.

Q: What steps is Sony taking to protect my personal data in the future?
A: We’ve taken several immediate steps to add protections for your personal data. First, we temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and, second, we are enhancing security and strengthening our network infrastructure. Moving forward, we are initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway. We will provide additional information on these measures shortly.

Q: Has Sony identified the party or parties responsible for the PlayStation Network hack and subsequent theft of personal information?
A: We are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the situation and are working closely with a recognised technology security firm in order to find those responsible for this criminal act, no matter where in the world they might be located.

Q: When will the PlayStation Network and Qriocity be back online?
A: Our employees have been working day and night to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.

IT SEEMS LIKE AT LEAST ANOTHER WEEK THEN UNTIL WE CAN WHEEL OUR MACHINES OUT OF THEIR HANGARS AND ARE CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF

last time a search as i was getting some stick from my xbox buddies there was a trojan virus released into XBL on march 2011 but only affected a small percentage, as i said to my mate as microsoft are prob the most hated firm in the world nearly they will be under constant attack so few will slip through the net and with the recent PSN attack they will prob be on increased alert for anything untoward.

From todays Daily Telegraph

In a detailed letter about the security breach to a US Congressional committee, Kazuo Hirai, chairman of the electronics giant, said the the file discovered by investigators was named "Anonymous" with the words "We are Legion", part of the Anonymous motto.
He also linked the breach, which began on April 16, to denial of service attacks on Sony systems launched by Anonymous in response to legal action against George Hotz.
The 21-year-old American hacker, who goes by the alias "geohot" online, circumvented copyright controls on the PlayStation 3, allowing it to run unauthorised software. Sony sued him in January after he published his discovery of codes embedded in the console that would let any other owner do the same.
"Several Sony companies had been been the target of a large-scale, coordinated denial of service attack by the group called Anonymous," Mr Hirai said.
"The attack were coordinated against Sony as a protest against Sony for exercising its rights in a civil action in the United States District Court in San Francisco against a hacker."
In their denial of service attacks, Anonymous members use specially-created software called the "Low Orbit Ion Cannon" to bombard targets with internet traffic. The tactic is designed to overload servers and force them offline.
On April 11, Sony announced it had settled its case against Mr Hotz out of court, but Anonymous nevertheless vowed revenge. The collective was founded to protest against perceived threats to free speech online.
"In the eyes of the law, the case is closed, for Anonymous it is just beginning," a video message posted on YouTube on April 13 said.
It called for real world protests against Sony on April 16 and warned also warned the firm to "prepare for the biggest attack you have ever witnessed, Anonymous style".
In his letter to the House Commerce Committee, Mr Hirai said Anonymous' denial of service attacks had helped the data thieves, because "security teams were working very hard to defend against denial of service attacks, and that may have made it more difficult to detect this intrusion quickly - all perhaps by design".
The breach of the PlayStation Network, in which 77 million users' names, user names, addresses, email addresses, birth dates, and hashed passwords were stolen, was detected on April 19. The near-simultaneous theft of 25 million gamers' details from Sony Online Entertainment, a PC service, was not detected until 1 May.
Both systems are currently offline and under investigation by digital forensics contractors, and the FBI.
Speculation will now focus on whether Anonymous members were actually behind the thefts, or whether professional cyber criminals hijacked the denial of service attacks and planted references to the collective to cover their tracks.
"Whether those who participated in the denial of service attacks were conspirators or whether they were simply duped into providing cover for a very clever thief, we may never know," Mr Hirai said.
Most computer security experts have so far believed Sony's systems were targeted by a professional criminal or gang seeking to profit from identity theft and credit card fraud.
But although its activities have been dominated by denial of service attacks, Anonymous has previously hacked into target systems.
Earlier this year members breached HBGary Federal, a computer security consultancy that had claimed it could identify Anonymous' leaders. The firm's email archive was published online, forcing the resignation of its chief executive.
The breach of the PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment has already been damaged to Sony. Its share price tumbled almost 5 per cent last week amid investor fears that extended outages and a barrage of lawsuits from angry customers would hit profits.
Sony has been criticised by US politicians, particularly over the week-long delay between the detection of the breach on 19 April and the release of information to customers on 26 April, but Mr Hirai defended the firm.
"Throughout the process, Sony Network Entertainment America was very concerned that announcing partial or tentative information to consumers would cause confusion and lead them to take unnecessary actions if the information was not fully corroborated by forensic evidence," he said.
All 100 million victims have since been urged to change their other online passwords and to monitor their credit card and bank statements closely. The major credit card providers have not yet reported any fraud as a result of the thefts, however.
The FBI already has an active investigation into Anonymous, and issued 40 arrest warrants in January in relation to denial of service attacks against firms including Amazon, PayPal and Visa. The firms were targeted last year after withdrawing services from WikiLeaks.
Six British men and teenage boys are currently on bail after being arrested as part of a coordinated investigation by Scotland Yard.
Anonymous' full motto reads: "We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us – always."

I CAN TRANSLATE WITH GOOGLE,ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS NEW

On 29 April, the official PlayStation Blog announced a start of good news.

Our employees are working day and night to allow a return as soon as possible to our network and we are looking at a possible return of some services in a week beginning 27/04/11.

Including well this brings us to May 4 So yesterday. Since nothing. And no further communication except for a "soon". Obviously Sony does not want to put its online service as its sanctity has been verified, re-verified on-verified. The problem resides elsewhere herein. It is impossible to ensure a secure network to 100%. Impossible.

At the same time, a rapid relapse of the PSN would be even more devastating impact on the image and the business of Sony. So what? We will have to resolve to submit the online PlayStation Network, the most secure manner possible. Unbreakable? No. William Lovett, an expert on cybercrime, we had also said. A situation that complicates the situation diabolically.

However, each day brings its lot of gray areas, doubts, lack of revenue to the developers of frustration for players ... 16 days after stopping the service and the commencement of hearings in court, it is reasonable to wonder how long it will last another blackout PSN? A few days? A week? More than that? The latest news release from Sony recalls now, and unspecified "May".

Certainty, if the NHP is not restored before E3 (early June), while Sony will face a crisis with consequences far more serious than imagined even a few days ago. More than ever, like Sony, gamers, publishers and developers hope that the crisis does not change the economic drama and fun. The multiplayer mode of Uncharted 3 needs NSP, NSP needs the Journey, Amy needs the PSN, Call of Duty requires the PSN FIFA and PES need the PSN ... like so many other crucial games for Sony's online business. Not to mention the frustration of the PlayStation +, who pay for "privileges" additional.

The issue is thorny and is communication from Sony. An exercise of the most delicate, but necessary in times of crisis does not leave room for rumors. As such, it is likely that the manufacturer no longer evokes dates so you do not handle disappointment if they are not required, but instead actively communicating on the concrete steps taken and the progress of the situation .

I think what they mean is that all services will be back up by the end of May. For example the PS Store will be restored sometime after online gaming and chat functions are reinstated. Which makes me wonder how valuable PSN+ will be without the PS Store.

It seems they are doing internal tests before turning psn back on
I bet there will be many problems after they have turned it back on anyway

From what Im reading this morning apparently hackers are planning further attacks on Sony this weekend. Suggests that they are also planning to publicise the information they have found on servers too. F'ing joy!
I'll edit this post further if I find anymore out about it.
What a pack of total and utter w@nkers.

Edit:
From CNET

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.
An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.
Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.
Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.
Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.
Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.
Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft.

What control do these 'leadership' heros think they have over who they're dealing with in their distributed and decentralized group? What's so noble in developing and distributing tools for grand scale robbery while claiming not to condone it?

As far as control goes probably as easy as trying to herd cats!
As for nobility, the word doesn't exist in their vocabulary.

Latest from the playstation blog...
Nick Caplin- Head of Communications (some irony there!) 7th May
As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects..
When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

So nothing new there then

Latest from the blog....I'm downloading the update at the minute.

We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.

If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

PSN is up in the Northeast United States. The Blog for my region crashed due to many people accessing, then refreshing the page. Interesting.

EDIT: @JR, if you are using your original PS3 which you created the account with, then you should be fine. You will be prompted to change your password, and i'd recommend getting an e-mail that you intend to keep.
