View Full Version : Anyone know why CloD makes my PC reboot itself whereas RoF does not?

OK, I know there is already another thread on this subject, and that I am banging this drum a lot, but it's pretty serious in my world - not only can I not play this game, but I'm also worried about what damage might occur.

I tried to play CloD again this morning with the new patch hoping that perhaps the reboot issue might have magically gone away.

It hasn't - I still can't play any of the dogfight missions through without reboots, even on medium settings at native resolution 1920x1200 (nothing touched in Advanced Settings).

All the fans in the PC are going mad, and then...BANG!

I know from MSI Afterburner that the GPU gets up to 75c and is maxed out in terms of clock speeds, VRAM usage, etc.

Now I understand from the other thread that my PSU might be the culprit here, and I am buying another, more robust version this week. The current one only has 32A between the two 12V rails, and the card specifies 40A.

What I do not understand, however, and where I'd like the advice of someone more expert than I (not hard lol) is why I can play Rise of Flight on almost maximum settings without getting reboots.

After the third CloD reboot this morning, I did an RoF test:

Settings at max. inc. AA & AF.
Post effects on.
Res: 1920x1200
Dogfight over Amiens at 1.000ft with 15 a/c per side.

Ran seamlessly, was beautiful (inc. Amiens and its cathedral), and I didn't notice any stutters or FPS issues (I don't bother measuring FPS btw - if it's playable without noticing FPS, then the FPS is fine. Doesn't matter to me whether I'm averaging 45 or 50).

I'll try using Afterburner tonight to see if RoF stresses the GPU like CloD does, but my fundamental question is:

Please can someone explain what CloD does to my system to make it reboot itself that RoF does not?

Because CoD is probably the most hardware demanding game on the market right now.

You should try a few benchmarking tools to see if you can reproduce the problem.

Thx, Swiss.

Yup, it's the PSU then.

Tried Furmark twice at the default test settings (1280x1024, 0xAA, full screen) and the PC rebooted itself during the test, just like while playing CloD.

Ho hum, another €130 on top of a new GPU...

Which one you wanna get?

Which one you wanna get?

PSU = This one: COOLER MASTER SILENT PRO 80PLUS Gold 135,70€

65A on a single 12V rail. Should keep things adequately and quietly fed for a while, and it's got a 5-year warranty.

GPU = This one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zotac-GeForce-GTX-Graphics-Card/dp/B004BDOJ7C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303235131&sr=8-1

GTX580 @ €100 less than I can get it Spain for! Was going to go for a 570 from here, but for the extra €60, it seems to make sense to go for the 580. Most other manufacturers (even via Amazon) still want €500+ for the 580, so good on Zotac for screwing market pricing to the benefit of the consumer!

The 2Gb RAM on the 6970 was tempting, but it's not all about CloD; especially the state it's in now. I'm an off-line player predominantly, and, whilst I foresee a couple of months of patches, settings optimisation/testing, once that's over I'm not sure how much there is in the game right now for off-liners.

Any comments about GPU choice would be welcome, but the Amazon offer is too good to miss, isn't it?

Just got a CORSAIR HX1000W...
40A for 2 12V channels total of 80A... should be enough even for a future 3 x GTX580 SLI (when ClOD will support it) and some room for o/c .
Will let you know my findings tonight.

Russkly, I think that the important thing is the 580 nvidia processor... Don't bother about the brand as soon as you don't o/c.
If I were you I'd go for a 1000+ W PSU to have some room for future upgrades...

Thx for the advice, Retaliator, and let me know if it solves the reboot problem for you. Furmark causes the same problem, so it's 100% a PSU issue.

Be aware that 40A on each 12V rail doesn't necessarily mean you have 80A available - see this thread on another forum:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22085001-PSU-Terminology-question-40A-on-12V-Rail

Still, you have plenty of amperage.

As you recommend, I'd like to go for more than 700W (the one I listed below is 700W, not 800W as I thought), but it's a question of what's on offer now. This one's got 62A on the 12V rail, so it's beefy, and I can't see myself going for SLI - RoF doesn't need it (at least not yet) and CloD doesn't deserve it (again, not yet!!!).

As for the GPU, I might hold fire until I see how CloD shapes up in terms of performance and playability for off-line users. At the moment spending €400 just for CloD does not seem worth it, and my other games (RoF, Arma 2, Combat Mission series, etc.) all run well with my current GPU.

If I do though, don't worry, I'll happily go with the cheapest manufacturer, especially since they're currently almost €100 cheaper than the others!

Cheers and good luck.

Got a new PSU (Corsair HX1000W) and the reboots are gone... I'm happy now !!
