Has anyone got an knowledge about hosting a MP server and the required bandwidth requirements per client?

I assume this figure will be somewhat depentant upon the complexity & size of the mission being run.

My connection is crap.. the side effects of living in the beautiful countryside!

How many clients do you think i could host?

Thanks.

The system requirements says 128 kpbs upstream for online play, but I don't know if those figures are for hosting a game.

Setup a server and see how it goes or measure the traffic with some traffic monitoring software.

Yeah, cheers. Was just wondering if anyone had a handle on it.

If its like DCS i could host for about 4 players for a 'real' mission. My interest is in real missions using the full map. Not death match on the mini MP maps.

20 people will need about 2 Mbps up.
That is whats happening on mine.

hmmm that means each player is using 100kbits which is triple from the original IL2 , I think that it will be more like 60kbits per player will be needed when setting up a dedicated server.
The original IL2 said 64kb now they say 128 which is double but there were people who could play on a 56k dial up so I am going to stick with the assumption that we will just have to double the bandwidth from what the original IL2 game needed, which was 32kbit per player for me to run a 20 man server.

leadfarmer u should be able to host about 30 players provided your PC can handle it.

Thanks for the input, helpful.

Yes, it set to 42 players I can host for more like 60-70 with the dedicated server.

Its amazing how little bandwith IL2 1946 uses;)

I have the game installed on our dedicated machine. I'm in the middle east right now, so no chance of me playing it.

The dedicated machine has 1000mbps (1 gig per second) upload/download bandwidth and is a 12 core xeon with 48 gigs of DDR3. I'd gladly host something for you guys if A.) someone hooks me up with a mission and B.) tells me how to start the server software to do so.

Mind you - this will be full realism CEM on etc, no icons, but I will leave the 2 handed control option off as many have reported several bugs with it.

Edit: And yes it will be set to 128 players.

I thought I did :)

But my internet is so slow that I usually type it out and hit send before the page loads!

Sorry.

No need to be sorry. Have someone fire that monster up so we can all enjoy it.

I'll look into it if no-one else steps up. I created a 128 SP using MP map within the first day of release and fraps it for youtube. You shan't want that though. Was for performance testing only.

I got this far. Looks promising. I about it on the other thread I started.

Every once in awhile, you come across this exception:
System.NullReferenceException – “Object reference not set to an
instance of an object.” You see people asking about this
everywhere; about why are they getting this error. Below are a
few common causes for this.

Note, regardless of the scenario, the cause is always the same in .Net:
You are trying to use a reference variable who’s value is
Nothing/null. When the value is Nothing/null for the reference
variable, that means it is not actually holding a reference to an
instance of any object that exists on the heap. You either never
assigned something to the variable, never created an instance of the
value assigned to the variable, or you set the variable equal to
Nothing/null manually, or you called a function that set the variable
to Nothing/null for you.

i am going to guess that it is looking for objects that are listed but not allowed in a Dedicated server hence causing the error, I will test by loading a empty map .

Setup a server and see how it goes or measure the traffic with some traffic monitoring software.

That is exactly what I would do. I was also thinking about hosting my own server but I am not quite sure if I have enough knowledge in order to do this. Until now I always used a web hosting site (http://www.ixwebhosting.com/) and I was very satisfied. Maybe I will try it too but first I will also definitely need more information.
