I know nothing of producing games or sound in games but I am blown away from the generic engine sounds I have heard in game from the Videos. They are below par to say the least. I am no expert but how tough would it be to put realistic sound files for the aircraft engine sounds? For example my favorite of all time is Jafaem's who does them for IL2. So I ask Luthier or anybody who has pull in developing to look into this and maybe do this. I think the sound(s) of the game make the game. It would bring more people to the game I think since your making a full Realitisic sim so should the engine sounds.
Ex} imagine IL2 COD your sitting on the airfield in your Hurri or Spit and see a Spit take off with these realistic sounds. I would cra* myself.

Jaffem has many great WWII aircraft sound as well as the bf109.
Just throwing it out there.
Cheers.

That's more like it! So many people have seen merlins in action at airshows that you just can't get away with a generic hum these days.
Maybe one day eh?

Has anyone heard of Tiger 33's Ultimate sound Mod, I'd love to see that running on CoD. Epic it would be!
Test it out, link is below the video.

Yeah I agree Tiger 33's Ultimate sound Mod just brings tears into my eyes ..just like the real sound of Merlin at the airshow (same goes for 109s).
But this generic sound ...I think the Merlin sound is the same as the sound from Fw190 in unmodded old IL2... just doesn make the same impression like nice graphics..but the opposite.

I recently digged that link back up from December 2010... in the description it says the sound (the same as ingame now) is a placeholder. I really do hope they get that fixed.

yup i agree the sounds need a serious overhaul.
the only ones i like are the bullet impact sounds and the plane ground explosion is also not bad.
but the rest of the sounds have about a 10 year old quality ;)
im shure that its just a matter of time till 1c or the community will bring a sound workover...
thanks in advance!

Agree.
My biggest issue with the game at present is the sound, most particularly the engine sounds.

wow perfect this is what we want ingame transfer this mod into the sim plz:cool: externals are awesome
Normally I am not too picky when it comes to sounds, but when I heard how the FW 200 sounded like, I thought that was a bad joke.....a moped sounds more powerful than that. Then when I think of those up date threads where there was one where there was a lot of talk about the sounds, and lots of videos presented with the various engine sounds and this is what comes around.....looks like people where more busy with the decoration than the main game.

I don't mean to bash down on tigers sound mod. But to me, the flyby's are the feature that ruin the soundmod. It's a flyby sound from an airshow that just loops each time you press F3. Doesn't feel like the plane in game is producing the sound, it feels like it's just being there as a placeholder. Personally I'd like to have sounds that are created by the game. Much like FSX, depending on angle you're viewing the aircraft, speed, rpm, supercharger etc.
Not saying this sound is superb, it's quite old but it is showing what I mean about the sound generation method. That it's the angle of the camera viewing the plane that determines what sound is dominant. This video demonstrates the spitfire coming in with a generic sound, then switching over to more of a defined exhauststack "putter" sound as it goes by.

ARMA II is a game that does pretty good at simulating aircraft noise:

Typically you'll hear the more defined jet sound in front of the plane, but in the back you'll hear more of a "windburst" tearing up the air. I know this from working with F-16's too. It's unbearable to stand infront of the F-16 without hearing protection, but behind the nozzle you're fine.
I can only imagine the props of wwII had more defined exhaust sounds behind the plane than infront, especially at high RPM's since sound travels through air and have to work their way through the propwash first.
Well this is how I would hope the 109 would sound like

"Par" isn't just a golfing term.
"Par" means equal or the average or usual amount.
Whilst in golf being below the par number of strokes is good, in general something that is below par is below the average or usual standard. This is not so good.
If you want to annoy everyone by being a smart arsed pedant, at least get it right.

"It looks like Letum is having some diffuculty on this Par 4, he's sliced and put the ball into the rough. Let's see if he manages to catch up to the pack on the next hole."

Sound is sooooo important with this sim. If this was about Ferraris and they used lawnmowers instead of a V-12, it would not work. It' does not work with Spits and 109s either. Almost everyone hears the problem, I just hope someone comes up with a good solution.:)

Yes! Is a "Fly by view" sounds, the evolution of fligth simulation sounds, can work with JAFA sounds inside and outside.
1C just need let a way for a unoficial improvement, all will be perfect.

I have searched and searched for these sound mods but all the links are dead.
The default engine sounds, well I won't even go there.

Sounds got a lot better since the official patch release but still there's a hell of a lot of work to do- the first thing that comes to mind is the RAF 8x .303; do you know what a hell of a sound that would be? That would almost drown out the 24 liter V12 engine at full song... What we have at the moment is a piss take.

They have a new sound guy that has done wonders since the original release.
Remember that they have to make these sounds artificially because of all the different variables for engine load, speed, doppler, inside, outside, prop pitch, damage and other things I havent even thought of.
Using a flyby or engine sound from an airshow only really gives you one dynamic.
This has been discussed before and the biggest issue is the cost it would take to sample all the different aircraft inside and out under all the different scenarios you would want. Sound is probably one of the hardest aspects to get right because you cant record the sound quality as a blueprint... Where as just about everything else about the planes has a fair amount of information about to make the visuals and flight models. Anyway its food for thought for those that havent considered the difficulty of getting this right.
I have heard quite a few warbirds in action including spits and 109s and it would be lovely to get the game sounds closer but i think its a pretty tall order!

I thought the 109 external sound in the current 1.5 retail version was excellent. The whine/whistle of the supercharger send chills through me; it literally sounded like Death approaching. As a Spit/Hurri flier, I was admittedly jealous and wished this sound fellow could work similar magic and provide us with the iconic Merlin external sounds instead of the current delivery truck external sound/.
Alas, not to be. Furthermore, the last two betas have "nerfed" that classic 109 engine sound. Perhaps it's just me, but this was a case where it wasn't broke but it got "fixed" nonetheless. To me, the 109 now sounds more like Honda Civic with fartboxes for mufflers. Hardly any reason to fly a Spit or Hurri with canopy open anymore.......

I really have to agree on this one. The sounds seem very muffled to me. Listening to videos of Merlins and similar engins it seems to me that the open exhausts emit a very sharp almost a gunshot sound on each firing stroke. As these individual sounds merge together as the engine revs increase they produce a sort of rhythm and combine with the increasing and complex noise generated by the prop to produce the characteristic growl of a big V12 aero engine. The only time the game comes close is when the engine is throttled back during landing etc.
