I have a copy of Win 7 just never loaded it as XP has been rock solid for me.
However is there really any advantage in loading a new copy of Windows 7 64 bit (for the game and an extra 4mb ram I'm thinking of getting...)
Any advice welcome. :)

I have often thought the same thing.
Looking forward to hearing some input about this.

I am really happy with Win7 x64. After hating Vista, that is.
I would clearly recommend Win7 over XP. The most obvious change would be, that a x64 system supports more than 4 gigs of RAM alongside some other important things not possible with XP like DirectX10/11 ...
So you will not be able to use more than 4 Gigs of RAM with Win XP. So this is a clear 'go for it' for oyur plan on getting more RAM.
Give it a try. It's worth it. ;)

I can't really reply as to whether it'll run the game better, but I have found Win7 x64 Professional to be an extremely good platform. Even more resiliant to my game playing than XP was.
Your mileage may vary, of course, based on specs.

For DCS A-10c its definately worthwhile. But I also think the game (like DCS-A10c) should be programmed in 64bit to be able to take advantage of the extra memory.
To my knowledge DCS a-10c is the only game programmed in 64bit to date.
Please correct me if i'm wrong about both assumptions.

The game is built around the DX10 API IIRC so unless you want to run one of the unofficial ports of DX10 to XP I would say yes. Just loaded Win7 Professional 64-bit myself over XP, and I've had no problems with it at all, once it's set up there's very little difference anyway, just make sure you turn UAC to never notify and be aware that you can't have the classic Start Menu style any more.

What other posters have said... Win7 can run directx 10+, can address more memory (installed as 64-bit) and has overall better resource management.
I waited a while to switch from XP to Win7 and now I'd never consider not using Win7. I've had zero issues with it.

Running Windows7 x64 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate on three different rigs since day of release w/o any issue. My conclusion; Windows 7 is the best Microsoft OS since DOS 3.11.....
Give it try, you won't regret !
I love it. I came from Vista 64bit and holy shait, the difference is huge.
For anyone else that comes from Vista, get a new HDD or SSD for W7 and keep the old one hooked up. Dual OS FTW, you just choose which one you want to use at startup. :) I don't know about XP though but I assume it applies to XP as well.

Hi Wulf. Long time no see.
I did the switch to Win7 (64bit) ( bootcamp on the Mac Pro) and it is alright. had less issues with it than expected.
Just a note. If some setup (usually install ) program does not work / give you blue screen ( I had two btw when installing the TrackIR software ), make sure you right click on it and "Run as administrator"
The games etc all work flawlessly.

I would recommend a clean new install.
After all, if you run Adobe CS3 or newer, Photoshop will greatly benefit from an x64 system, as it supports that.

Id definitly upgrade to windows 7 64bit. Only thing I would check though is if you have any special or specific hardware that you are using currently to make sure that they make windows 7 drivers and check to make sure those drivers are working from forums ect. There is still a few hardwares out there that either doesnt have no windows 7 drivers or the the windows 7 drivers dont work good at all.

I'd definately recommend it. You might spend a few days finding the bits and pieces they moved around from XP to Win 7 but overall it was a good switch for me from XP to Win 7 64 Bit.

Moved to Win 7 64 Bit from XP Pro 32 and haven't really looked back. You will really need to have about 4 gigs of ram though to let it breath a bit. It has higher overhead but when you launch a game it does a great job of giving you all the resources.
I did a side by side comparison because I have another drive with Win 32 just using IL2. I get smoother game play with Win 7 than with XP. Also with 8 gigs of ram I have yet to have a game give me any studders or slowdowns except for the normal stuff.
Win 7 was ready for prime time from the start.
The only game that will give you headaches with this move is Falcon 4 both FreeFalcon and AF if and only if you use an Nvidia Card. ATI doesn't have any problems.

Just regular Home version will be just fine, the other versions contain apps and features generally better suited for the business type environment.

Running windows 7 x64 bit professional here without a problem. I agree it has to be the best microsoft OS in a long time. I have 8 gig of ram and it sees it all. I was running Vista 32 bit and windows only saw a little over 3 gigs. Much better gaming results than with Vista 32. I did the upgrade to Win 7 x 64 and popped in a geforce 2 gig 560ti and I have not regretted it. I run ROF on all the highest settings and run low 40s to upper 50s fps. I guess I average around 50. And this is on an old Asus p5k deluxe with a Q9550 overclocked at 3.6. Cant wait to get my hands on COD, gogamer moved my date back to April 19th.

Win7 x64 clean install on a SSD is a must. I would not recommend an upgrade. And get a SSD disk, best thing that has happend to my computer. Put all your applications and games that you use the most on the SSD and the rest on a large HDD.
But if you have a large Steam folder then you need to think twice, Steam can only install to one disk.

64 bit home version limits you to 16 gig of ram. Pro limits you to 192 gig of ram. also microsoft support of home version ends in 2015 for pro it ends in 2020. Pro is only about 30 to 40 bucks more.

There is a chart on this link that shows all the differences between versions. I have the professional 64 bit version and dont regret getting it over the home version at all.
