From what I can see in the vids, looking good.
From what I can here, sounds still SUCK. Especially the machine guns...just like a very bad drum kit. AMAZING.
I hope someone with real talent is already working on a fix.

Yeah mate, these amateur's have really been struggling these last 10 years, buggered if I know how they managed to give us the best flight sim ever when the have no talent? Blind luck I spose.
arrrrrrghhhhhhhh!!!!!!

So, just where are you going to find Spits, Hurris, 109s, etc... with fully functioning weapons to record?
And would you believe the sounds anyway if they did?
Real gunfire is not a Hollywood special effect, not even close.

What bugs me, is that the 109, stuka and hurricane all sound the same from external view.
Well, that's my impression from few the vids that's been posted so far.
Old Il2 has a bit more variety at least.

Youtube compresses sound as well as video depending on the settings of the uploader. It may not be indicitive of the actual sound played in the game.
But only a week or so away and we will have a chance of hearing it in person.
Of course my ears are stuffed due to loud music, loud cars and unprotected shooting during my formitive years! What you hear and what I hear may in fact differ.
In quiet moments of self-reflection you realize how dumb can young people be!
Cheers!

As I said, COD is beautiful to look at. But the sound is half the game. If ROF, Battle of Britain 2, CFS 1, 2 and 3 and every other flight sim or FPS can get the sound right, why not Oleg and company. The Stuka sounds like a lawn mower, the guns sound like someone beating a snare drum. SOUND has always been IL2 and company's blind spot. If they could fix it they would. They obviously can't. Maybe a very talented modder will handle it.

The sounds suck compared to what?
I feel they are wonderful and top notch!
Of course there are always complainers, because that is their purpose in life, to complain.
In the future they will record a real Merlin and DB601, for now it's the Klimov V12 that will have to do.

The souds suck compared to every single IL-2 1946 soundmod. Also there is one more sim that suffers from poor sounds and that is ARMA series stock vehicle sounds are just horrid

Internal sounds are nice but external engine sounds are not too good. I'm sure we can fix that though :)

How do you know what its supposed to sound like? Did you fly in the battle of britian? You did oh then you know what your talking about then.
Wow, that's is some real high quality sound you have there, holy moly:o
I think we would all be honoured to have your sounds in the game.

The retardation on these forums is laughable sometimes. Assessing an entire game from horribly compressed youtube videos! Really?
I'm going to tell James Cameron that avatar has horrible HD qualities JUST from watching this crappy 304/144 pixel pirated video camera job I download from a Hong Kong torrent site.

I've felt similar, playing Il-2 for a few years. The droning, low quality sounds really started to grate on the nerves after a while.
However, the problem remains that in order to get quality you first need to find working machines/weapons from that era, sample them well from multiple locations, with an array of mics, and then use someone with a good knowledge of audio and fidelity to mix them down.
Being an audio engineer as a day job, I'd gladly offer the mixdown and processing service, but I neither have the time, means, nor inclination to go out hunting for ancient guns and aircraft to sample!
Either that or one can skimp on the 'authenticity' element, and simply sample close analogues and use them as the processing base instead. The reality is that very few people care about sound - or it's authenticity, even those who fancy themselves hardcore simmers. I'd be happy to make that compromise in order to get some audio beef going on.

and also, why you suppose that sound mods will be possible? cracking the code again? let's give CoD a full development cicle before before starting with this "mod" debate.
And another thing, you guys know someone who can record the real samples with the required equipment for a binaural recording?

Yes, I did fly in the Battle of Britain and after the war played drums in a band. So...I know brownings when I hear them and a snare drum. COD guns sound like a snare drum. My Spit sounded like machine guns when I fingered the firing button. Anything else I can clarify for you...dolt!

You know, there is no rule that says that engine and gun sounds has to sound cool , infact most of the time they're not even close to hollywood or war films and their "cool factor".

Sounds of guns in the planes are pretty much spot on. Also loved the hitting sound of bullets against your own plane -- like stones thrown to a metal plate. Pretty much spot on too. They did a great job as far as I can see in the youtube videos.

we know from great videos shot on flybys and footage inside the aircraft how they sound, the game is nowhere close to the engine sounds external sounding mainly .

so far some of the externals on better videos dont sound too bad - if you're not sure what 109 should sound like on externals try listening to this (sorry no gunfire!!) http://www.youtube.com/user/TheKevanB?feature=mhsn#p/a/u/0/Xs0_R0iP7tc

i do agree with you the internals are not to bad sounding, again its trying to capture the beautiful external audios , i have came up with a good plan to try add them into the sim hopefully it will work ok, recapture the sweet sounds ingame.

I heard lots of stuff through youtube and other amateur sources, and those are crappy microphones AND usually major distortion (the sound is too loud for the microphone to correctly record. It is called 'clipping'). The sounds I've heard so far in this game is what I would expect it to sound like in real life, when removing the distortion & low quality microphones. Convincing, fascinating and satisfying. They also sound pretty similar to the very few high quality recordings I have heard of a Bf 109 in flight (some audio CD recording for hardcore fans).
The guns firing should probably be kind metallic plonky. The bolts in the MG's/cannons slam hard and quickly back and forth, and since the guns are directly attached to the frame of the aircraft, the vibrations go all the way into the cockpit. Lots of cavities and hollow spaces inside for the sound to bounce around in, too. On the other hand, the loud bang from gases shooting out of the barrel, and supersonic crack of the projectiles, have to go through a thick glassed canopy and pilot flight helmet / radio. This should muffle the bang & supersonic cracks.

and your qualifications as to what are correct sounds for varying ww2 warbirds are?
I have heard some atrocious sound mods for Il2 so IMO your opinion is wrong.

Oleg,
Looks really great. I have loved everything about WW2 fighters since I saw my first one...probably a P-40 with shark markings when I was a kid. My dream to actually fly these planes has come true partly due to the efforts of you and your team. Thanks for all your amazing work and for making this 53 year old kid's dreams come true. I'm sure the finished game will be awsome.

Oh what a coincidence I also flew in the Battle of Britain and played drums in a band. In fact I usually brought my drum-kit into the cockpit and practiced during dogfights. That's just how I roll. I have to say I would sometimes hit my snare as 109s would fire their 20 mm at me and they sounded nothing alike. But of course I haven't flown a 109 personally. Oh except that one time I did, but that's another story.
