It is called the most beautiful plane of WW2. It's a legend & larger than life. It got something that's beyond articulating, and the guys still alive to tell they flew them, are approaching 100...

A lot has been said and written about the crate, as I understand the pilots called the bird during the war, and I just wondered... Is all said? Is that really possible?!

The Spitfire is still flying.

A whole lot of care must be going into the airworthy ones left. They weren't really built to last 75 years! Hopefully they'll keep em flying as long as spare parts are available.

Good point, the amount of work (and love) that goes into maintaining these gorgeous old birds is astounding. One plane that never ceases to amaze me is the ol' reliable DC-3. I mean, she aint much to look at, but several examples are still working the line and turning a profit for their owners. Not as pampered museum pieces, but actually making money at the task they were originally designed for some 75 years ago. Talk about tough.

Hmmmm. I can understand it being called beautiful, but THE most beautiful WW2 aircraft?

Rivalry and the fact its NOT the most beautiful aircraft of WW2 (Hawker Hurricane takes that accolade im afraid) aside....


Congrats on making it through 75 years and wowing the crowds with your merlin/griffon engine. A sound that gives you goose bumps all over. A remarkable piece of machinery and surely the greatest fighter plane of WW2..... AFTER the Battle of Britain ;)
