Cant quite get my head around this. The recent videos for COD are all wide screen. Does this mean the game will be best viewed on wide screen monitors ? The problem here is that everything else on a PC is surely better suited to a 4:3 screen is it not ? I would for example have to get a pretty massive wide screen monitor to match the depth of a standard ratio 19 inch screen ?
Your expert opinions much appreciated

You should be running on wide screen - it's pretty much the standard now.
And no, 4:3 isn't always better. It might be good for resolutions less than 1200 height, but when you get above 27" @ >= 2560x1440 - wide screen clearly wins. I notice that you were referring to 19 inch screens - if you are buying a new monitor, look for minimum 23".

I expect Cliffs of Dover will have wide-screen resolutions to choose from. As the visual interface, and the bit where the game user traction takes place, having a nice big high definition screen in a supported resolution is what you want. I use a 24" monitor and a 37" hi-def lcd tv, both are 1080 x 1920 and many i've no doubt CloD will be able to service that resolution. Older games, even Il2, don't look so hot on the big screens as its not a resolution it was ever intended to support. There may be some mods for il2 to allow it to format for widescreen hi res monitors, but I haven't got them.
A 19" screen would seem hopelessly inadequate to me now I've been spoiled rotten by the big screens. Sitting in front of the 37" is virtually i-max. If you can afford it, and hi-def LCD tvs are relatively cheap now everyone's pumping out LEDs and 3d TVs, get one.

22" 16:10 widescreen here and I would never go back to a 4:3
Everything is better; gaming especially but the extra screen real-estate benefits browsing and generally navigating your desktop too.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
CLOD will most probably support 4:3, 16x10 and 16x9 monitors.
My take is that you shoulg get a 16x10 instead of a 16x9.. That way you get just a bit more view in the vertical.
They are harder to find as most monitor (and HDTV) are now 16x9.

Looks good, but no HDMI or mini-DisplayPort, and its a 16x9, not a 16x10 (1920x1200)monitor. 16x10 monitors are about 1.5x time more expensive.
So,in your price range its a good choice.

Since air combat turn and burn is all about the relative vertical, I have my widescreen turned 90 to be a thin screen. I can see straight up while looking through the gunsight ... and I can JUST see the sides of the armor glass ...

whilst Bnzooming, most targets come in from the sides tough.... 3 screens side beside, so i can see that lag coming in from the kitchen, into my sights XD

while all you widescreen fashion victims are happily flying along, trying to look up (yes the quickest way to turn is to roll and pull back, this isnt an FPS :D), i shall be upside down pprox 1km above and ahead of you, waiting for my moment to pull back and dive down out of the sun with that perfect 90 degree angle on your pilots barnet. with my 4:3 screen i will see you much easier :D

Well, continue dreaming :-D
If the viewing is closer to real as IL2-1946 you wont see any enemy against the ground easily.

That is what i have now, a 19" iiyama, it still works great, so why replace it. but i am a little jealous of the peeps with huge screens.
