so... if oleg decided to show you a guy driving a tank, you ask if we can still fly planes?

its would be idiotic to have the channel map out of MP, its been on the features all along, and you know il2, we have had this symplystic and arcadish maps from day 1 along side the big "real" maps.

see you cross channel

Great. Terrain colours look spot on now. Lighting too.

A lot of interesting features shown - like the instruments only view. The Heinkel getting shot up and different damage effects are great.

Also, nice to see the individual bullet holes when realistic gunnery is on.

Excellent. Thanks for finding and posting.
Trees look great, colours are better.

I think it would look better if the beach texture had a broad area of grass (or just green colour) at the land edge; before the fields and roads start.

I am really looking forward to this game. It looks like it has been worth all the waiting.

Interesting Video, thx!

Just a question about the engine sound. IMO the spitfire engine sounds very much like the current fw 190 engine. We heard it before, but it would be interesting to know if it's a place holder or the final sound (btw how hold is this video?).

Damage looks great. The .303 "feels" realistic. Some well aimed shots and the cooling system of the 109 is gone. The bomber can take a lot more. So, it feels very realistic to me.

Realism perfect? Ilya said this was on medium settings if I'm not mistaken... Individual bullet holes? It's the same scripted visual damage modeling we have in Il-2, ie. texture overlays, nothing new there. Have you even played IL-2 before? :D

Well, if it is indeed in medium settings, and you look at the terrain in this video of the Beta version, with an average machine, I would say it is perfect ......Much much better that anything we have seen yet from COD developpement...
The same goes for everything you see in that video, including damage modeling...Go back to last Friday's video and you will see what level of damage detail we will get...Put every bits and pieces of information we've got so far togheter and you will get an idea of the magnitude of this game...
I just don't know if it is possible with current PC's horsepower to have every settings maxed up at a decent fps...

ps: what the hell is IL-2 ?

Read up on the interview published about a year ago where a German (I believe) journo was given a preview of the game in Moscow.
One of the programmers demonstrated the individual bullet tracking on a Stuka.

Do you even know ANYTHING about this game!!? :)

Actually - tracking EVERY bullet fired from even one Spifire is going to be a major achievement, so there is probably some 'cleverness' going on to make it all manageable - but something along those lines was demoed in the report.

Learn to read, FFS. And if you honestly believe you are going to see dynamic damage and hundreds of accurately placed miniscule bulletholes on a Stuka -- I have some awesome oceanfront property in Fukushima you might be interested in ;)

Note, I'm NOT shitting on the game - on the contrary, just being real. BTW, Maddox stated a while back during a Q&A that damage granularity though improved will be nowhere near realistic. It's just too expensive for now.

I dont see how bullet holes at the exact same spot are so important to you, IL2's damage model is good for me, it indicates where you were hit, just not that tiny .303 round that struck on your wing, and you might not even have noticed in real life, from what I've seen the damage in the latest videos, looks really good, a lot more detailed than IL2 so that's a big plus.

But that's not the main thing about the new damage model, it's the inside, the many separate components that can be destroyed there, that's the real thing. And I'm much looking forward to that. There's where the simming starts for me.;)

While true, Il2 already does this since a few years ;) Of course with much more detailed plane components modeled, the final hit calculations will be slightly more demanding, and that's where the real progress of the damage model will be, not in visual bullet holes.

As damage decals seem to be a quality setting it's possible they were disabled here. That cumulative damage is still represented by more generic damage textures should be a non-brainer - nobody calculates physically correct deformation of rigid bodies in real time.

Strike
03-22-2011, 05:43 PM
infact i could see individual bullet hole decals in this vid. Right after shooting at the 109, and showing the closeup at . As the camera pans below you can see bullet holes under the belly (06:45) and afterwards riddle the tailplane (07:04). I am a little scared because AI behaviour looks just like IL-2. A little wingtip damage and then an unrecoverable spin towards the ground. If you've ever been shot at in IL-2 and nearly lost a wing to damage, you know it's still flyable enough to get back to base, even if you can only bank in one direction (use rudder to induce roll).

Sounds are poor. Period. They're the ones from the original series in this vid. I think they have better ones for the release.

I was referring to the account of the visit to the devs by Grégory Lemasson last year - round about February. There was a fair bit of info about different aspects of the game. Had a search for the article but can't find a link, but I had saved it and just had a read.

Here is the bit I was talking about:

"Roman (lead programmer) carries on with demos of the Junkers damage model. He is using his mouse and select an english .303 weapon. He then clicks like hell on the Stuka and explains that all small caliber bullets will be taken in account in the aircraft DM and indeed after two dozens of mouse clicks I notice after every click a hole appeared in the aircraft fuselage at the exact location where he clicked.
For shells the behavior will be a bit different as visually the effects will be similar to IL2 but the damages themselves will be modelized within the internal structure which has a very detailed modelization."

See also the attached pic.

Maybe you should do a bit more reading yourself. Certainly would be nice if certain blowhards around here didn't take to jumping down people's throats every time a difference of opinion comes up.

It should be no problem then, since the picture matters more than the predictable dialogue? Just kidding;)

The map is obviously a deathmatch arena map, so i'm not fretting over it.

On another note, if you pause at 5:57 you can clearly see three individual bullet holes on the left wing of the crash-landed Spit (right after the 109 makes a strafing run on it).

The map is just wrong, but the ground textures itself look better than even in some most recent screenshots and vids IMO.

All aircraft of this era had flaps which were not useful in combat, they were too fragile. That includes the 109 even though its flaps could be deployed in increments, instead of being either up or down. The only aircraft which could deploy flap-type devices at higher speeds was the Stuka, and those were dive brakes.

In this particular video, you can see Luthier is jumping from one Spit to another, the one with the flaps deployed, he slows the Spit down and deploys the flaps as if for landing, the 109's are going much faster and overshooting. The historical flaps deployed till they were either up or down, you can see that is the case in the video, they did not stop halfway.

By the way, re. flap deployment speed, the 109 flaps were handcranked, and took 30 seconds from completely retracted to completely deployed.

By the way, the 109 continues to look quite plastic, not sure if this is a function of its weathering not being finished at this point in the Beta.

Can we get back on track?

Each individual bullet hit is shown exactly where it strikes, as a individual bullet hole decal.

In addition to that, large Il-2 style holes are displayed in predetermined spots when the damage is heavy enough. We still cannot do large holes dynamically, or rather, we can't make them look very good, jagged edges, internal damage, etc.

Compared to Il-2, the planes are split up into many more smaller individually damageable sections, each of which display their larger damage individually. For instance, an Il-2 wing was made up of three sections, and a BoB wing is 14 - or in total, while an Il-2 plane had about 30 damageable components, most planes in BoB have over 300.

This means that you rarely see similar-looking damage, as it's hard to damage the exact same components every time.

Hi Luthier - great video! You look very relaxed :) Best relaxed demo that been released yet.

BTW - I like the little dogfight map. It's nostalgic - brings back memories of the Il2 islands and other small dogfight maps that were the rage in the early days.

This video made me think/hope for something new - especially for new pilots who never flew Il2 like we did. I'd be very happy if I opened up the sim and found in the new FMB maps labled "Online 1, Online 2" etc.... Exact recreations of the "Mountain Map" and a few others at least. It would be very, very cool.

Sometimes you guys have no appreciation for Pop aesthetics.

It's cool in the same vein as 'All your base are belong to us!' and because many of us learned to dogfight on maps like that - although I guess not all are man enough to admit it :)

Besides, it'll provide some relief from the "Scheisskanal".

Sometimes I think there's this vocal minority of "Recreationists" who live to spoil fun. I've lived and loved locked cockpit, no icons for at least 7 years - but the other things can be fun if you just open yourself up to them. Again, think about all the Newbs for once.

If you think I'm going to fly my 109 at stall speed after 18 August because "Goring tells me too" or that I'm going to limit team flying on RAF to Vics and "idiotrotte" then you've got another thing coming.

Quick question, when a wing structure I.e. Spars... Are heavily damaged will we see evidence of elastic and plastic deformation under high loads or will we just see it snap?
