^ Wow, that's pretty unfair... Steam Store page shows 31 March over here in Europe (Germany).
Do you at least also get a free copy of Silent Hunter III for pre-ordering the game over there, too?
Steam version available April 1st for $49.99 here in Australia (with free SH3 when pre-ordered). Hard copies are advertised elsewhere as being available on the 25th March. That's highly suggestive of the DVD versions not being as tied up with Steam after all, if at all.

Yeah, I get SH3 free. I already own it twice, but I guess it'll be nice to have a steam integrated version LOL.
I'm trying to find a work around to get CoD on the 31st like the rest of you, just e-mailed Just Flight about it, as they list the game available in 3 different currency's.... We shall see.. I'm thinking at worst I won't be able to play online until it officially releases here.. But offline play will do me just fine till then!

SH3 is an awesome game. If you start getting into it, try the GWX mod for it.. Makes it all the more better. It's over at subsim.com
2 things to remember though,
1. Don't save while you are under water (likely to corrupt your save)
2. Don't save while you are near a bunch of ships (likely to corrupt your save)
Other than that, you should be good to go. Happy hunting!
I think I may dig mine out and start playing it hehe.

Dunno. Must just takes longer to cram all thoes informations across the internets, all the way from moscow to the US, it's a long way man. It's cold up there too, you kno, teh pipes shrink and stuff. Makes it harder. We probly get it quicker in oz though cos it's still a long way, but it's easier to push it downwards. You know, like, with Gravity. It's scientific man. Can't explain it:grin:
Seriously though, it is hard to explain. Marketing? Sorry USA, I guess there's still a chance you might get in quicker if you can get hold of hard copies. The world will be waiting.

I'm pretty sure most aussies on are doing the same because we're not getting screwed for once - see how that works ubisoft? happy customers spend $$
Hope to keep my collectors unused on my shelf, but the real challenge is can I resist it for 24 hours!

Ordering from steam..
Ubi said if you have a boxed version, including CE you need internet to initialize the software with steam. If you have boxed version after you initialize your software you can play offline anytime without logon to steam.
So.. they specifically indicate if you have boxed version. I conclude, if you don't have boxed version you cannot play offline without being Online with steam.
In other words, if you have steam version regardless you must be online to play, even if you are playing on your own computer and not online server.
Correct me, if I'm wrong. I was just reading carefully the message given about boxed versions.
If the above is correct, then I definitely will buy only a boxed version of COD.
Internet connections can be fickle, and fail. Not that it would cost me anything financially, if the connection failed.
I just feel, if I have to be online all the time to play whether I'm online server or only on my local PC that is a recipe for trouble.

Thats a bit of a jump/assumption. Not saying its wrong but I didnt read anything in that quote to say steam was not the same deal, as all steam games can be played offline after initial dl.
Also they need to check the 500s for compatibility ASAP, nvidia has ceased manufacturing 400s since months ago so all that is left are the cards already stocked (new stock will only be 500s).

Good news indeed, thats 30 million accounts that will have that information shown to them the next time they log in, even if just 5% decided to pick it up thats 1.5 million potential sales which should more than cover the naysayers living under their tin foil hats that won't buy because of Steam.

Doubt it. Constant internet connection would have to be in the system requirements as it was for the last round of notorious ubi titles. Constant online was ubi's idea and opposed by steam.

I doubt that as well.
STEAM-Games don't require constant online-connection per se. Especially not those with STEAM-DRM. They can be played offline and also via LAN.
The only exclusions to this rule is the additional DRM built into some games, like it was for Rise of Flight. But obviously, that is not due to STEAM. We shouldn't jump to conclusions (especially those people shouldn't, who don't have ANY personal experience with STEAM at all...)

Yeah, as others have said, a bit off the mark there.
"Ubi said if you have a boxed version, including CE you need internet to initialize the software with steam." They didn't say you had to initialize with Steam, just that you had to initialize online. Seeing as we know SolidShield is involved, it's safer to assume they meant that, not Steam. And as they said later on that the DRM aspect of Steam wasn't being implemented on the boxed versions, it's pretty much certain that no, you won't have to initialize with Steam, but with SolidShield.
"If you have boxed version after you initialize your software you can play offline anytime without logon to steam." Given the above, yes, as Steam never enters the equation. But even if Steam were involved you could still play offline (even though the Steam program itself would have to be running, see second paragraph below).
"So.. they specifically indicate if you have boxed version." Yes, they make it clear there are differences between the boxed and downloadable versions. Whether there's a difference between downloadable versions from Steam and other vendors still isn't known.
"I conclude, if you don't have boxed version you cannot play offline without being Online with steam." No, you can always play offline with Steam if you want to. But the Steam client that you installed on your computer will always be running in the background if you want to play a Steam game. All your Steam games are effectively programs installed within the Steam program. You just choose whether or not you want the Steam program to be connected to the internet once you start the Steam program up to play your game through it.
"In other words, if you have steam version regardless you must be online to play, even if you are playing on your own computer and not online server." Again, no, you don't have to be online, but you do have to have the Steam client running on your computer in the background when you're playing a Steam game, online or offline.
All that said, there are still some missing pieces of information in regards to the boxed versions and whether or not they still require the Steam client/program to be installed at all, even if it's never used to connect to the internet.

Hey, I wouldn't argue with anything you guys mentioned.
After years of working with software I've learned a few things.
If it's not said, it's not there or if it's not said to match your needs it's probably not there.
So, I guess we could use a better articulation for OFFLINE players.
I appreciate all the responses, but does anyone agree we need a better explanation.
Afterall, like everyone else I can buy DL from steam and be onboard the date of release, otherwise I have to wait additional time.
So, if I can't be OFFLINE and do OFFLINE play without being connected to internet I'd better wait to acquire a hard copy.
As it is now, I will buy hard copy only. No sense to buy steam DL version and pay again to buy Boxed version, because I am principally Offline player

Not necessarily all of Europe. I'm in Estonia and I can't view it on Steam (the announcement is on the news page, but I click it and it says 'Oops! Sorry! Not available in your region!').
And no, Estonia is not really Eastern Europe. We are only 200km away from Finland who are getting it on the 31st, so why we wouldn't be is beyond me. Hopefully there's just a delay for us and I'll be able to wake up one day this week and be able to see that it's there for us on Steam on the 31st.

1. It's a game.
2. There were dozens of people demanding an exact date. Apparently you can't do it right for everybody.
this steam realy sucks price-wise: its 49 USD and 49 €, which makes the price of european release 20 USD higher (i.e. 69 USD).

Generally speaking, I agree. But looking into the details of it, there are still a lot of unanswered questions, about what's been implemented, what could have been implemented, and what might be implemented (or even worked around) in the future. We just haven't been given enough information to be able to state categorically what people will be able to do with the game without resorting to using illegally modified versions of it (which is not really an option for me I might add.)

Im a practical guy. I can accept if it doesn't come out till the 19th of April, that's just the way it works.
But...
If I can order it boxed from the UK and have it shipped a bit earlier I might just do that unless there's a problem activating it with Steam.

Yes Steam is required to play any version of the game, at least in Multiplayer. You might be able to play it single player without, since it does not use steam DRM, sadly.

I am from EU and through Steam the game will cost me 383 kr (49,99 EU). That is very cheap for a game here. Usually they cost 499 or 599 (depends on how popular they are)
But I am still wondering if I will go for the boxed collectors edition or just get it through steam. If the stores don't have it here the 31 mars I think I will go for the Steam version.

As others have stated im fairly sure its something to do with the US English, licensing or something like that but to in all honesty AHAHAHAHAHA taste your own medicine how i can't count the number of games that were released in the US before anywhere else, even some games developed in the UK came out in the US before the UK!!!!

Steam is now supporting voice-chat for browser and ingame, using the Skype-Technology.

Steam chat with SILK is now also automatically available for all games that take advantage of the Steamworks Voice API.
I don't believe Steam is integrated into Il-2:CoD to this level.

Apparently, you can also run the voice-chat in the background, while playing the game. Just as the chat-option. This is not depending on the game, though games will probably benefit from it more, if they do. (e.g. setting side-channels, etc)

Available: 31 March 2011 is the UK STEAM release date.
Available: April 19th, 2011 is the US STEAM release date.
How can this be? Isn't steam one company? If they have the game then they have the game correct? Im really confused on this one.
Is this just a case of one hand not talking to the other?
I get that some publishers might get the game at different dates, but this is the same publisher why is it different?

I think this is 19th of April now for the world.... at least if I check steam from Hungary, this shows 19th of April now.

It's curently sceduled for 31 march in The Netherlands (and I assume the other BENELUX countries as well). I find it quite strange as well that there is such a big difference between the US and UK release date.

Maybe it's more about paperwork and regulations than mechanical publishing type issues.

Could be a mad dash to have everything translated to English....
