View Full Version : Is London in COD ?

Just a thought...

I have not seen any pics of aircraft over London in COD or London buildings for a long long time, and no in-game videos of the London area, in fact almost every single pic and video has the sea or coastal areas in it...put that with the fact of calling the sim ' Cliffs Of Dover' which would imply the game only features coastal action?

So can anyone confirm London and many of it's famous landmarks is still in COD?

Or will this be added later?

How can you have a Battle of Britian without London?

I am sure London is there, I doubt Oleg would allow it not to be.

That's what I mean, we have those very old pics, but they are not in-game pics and nothing has been said about London at all in 2011

I would have thought that in-game video or pics featuring the famous landmarks in the heart of London with barrage ballons and flak bursts above would help to sell COD very well indeed...

I really hope it's a frame rate problem and not that a detailed London is one of the features not included in the initial release...remember this game is not Storm Of War: Battle Of Britain it is now IL2: Cliffs Of Dover....

We'll find out either way very soon !

Yes, 1940's London has been modelled.

Sorry...not good enough only a background ! :)

Also features the exact same Ju88s and Bf110 from the official website main pic !!

It will be fantastic if we have a huge London with warehouses, factories, docks, and famous buildings...

If you bale out over London can your pilot be run over by the number 47 bus? or any vehicle for that matter? Will the pilot run for a bit and dive on the ground like IL2 or will he just stand/lay there ?

There could be many reasons why they're not showing certain aspects of the game. But...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ_U4Ljx7C0&feature=player_embedded#at=48

Watching this video between about 40-56 seconds and seeing the drastic popping in and out of ground details, I can understand why it might not be a good idea at this point to show London city, if huge swathes of it would be appearing and disappearing in a similar way. Better to emphasize the positives in your product or project, especially when knowing there'll be no shortage of people ready and willing to emphasize, or even over-emphasize, any perceived negatives or failings in it.

In several WIP updates london as ingame screnshots were to see. And on the big campaign map it is also!

The pilot will immediately make for the nearest pub and, depending on how long he had been in-flight - and therefore distressingly sober - may or may not be cognisant of ground-based vehicles. As such, a 'fighter boy' who has been perhaps up to 12 hours away from the ale will disregard everything around him in his furious dash toward said bar and therefore may indeed become yet another casualty of the London transport system. We lost many good men this way.

Should his need for ale be not so pressing, it's entirely possible he will be able to negotiate his journey at a more leisurely pace and therefore avoid death by bus.

:)

Prehaps Spifire girl works behind the bar pulling pints for the brave RAF fighter boys?! and you get cockpit blur when you've had one too many!

Anyway...I think you might be right about not showing London due to performance issues...but the cat will be out of the bag in a few days when the game is released, cannot remember ever wanting a game this bad...

I have it on good authority that all production of the game has been held up while they try to fix a bug in which the farmers that bail you up with pitch-forks and the civilians that offer you cigarettes keep getting stuck in behaviour loops, not allowing you to race off to the pub at all. Most frustrating. But I've been assured that when you include a hip-flask in your pilot's load-out you can still get pissed on the spot anyway, so not to worry.

Incidentally, along those lines, I still haven't been able to convince Oleg to allow pre or in-flight drinking from said flask, but I suspect he's just holding out so he can include it as a new feature in the Eastern Front expansion. I know for a fact they've got all the game mechanics worked out for it, blurred vision and altered responsiveness of the controls etc. There's even a part of the campaign where your drinking gets out of control and you're grounded until you straighten out, then, ironically, later on in the campaign when you've become flight leader you have to discipline your wingman for doing the same thing, after one unfortunate incident too many, shooting up friendly ground-targets I believe.

Anyway, to sum up, yes, on-ground collision detection has been written into the game engine, but won't be included in the initial release and neither will be the realism setting whereby you must control your pilots level of sobriety. Technically though, the drunken pilot thing has been in Il-2 from the start, but people just assumed when the pilots and crew bailed out and ran for a while before keeling over it was out of a sense of relief or self-preservation. No, they're just too pissed to go any further. But Oleg and the crew had to cut out the pre and in-flight drinking animations to keep the game's PG rating, and the old Il-2 engine wasn't really up to giving you the necessary level of realistic drinking control anyway, and you know what Oleg's like, if the feature can't be done properly, it gets ditched.

Cheers.

NO! London will not be in CoD ... because there's no 24 Core / 5000 Jhz (Jigga Hertz) processors on the market yet that can render it on the screen. :-P

Why would London not be included?

Have you read anything EVER about the Battle Of Britain?
The whole reason (imo) the Germans began to loose was because they switched from bombing the airfields to targeting London...

Thanks for that Mini ! ;)

My worry is that COD is unplayable when flying and fighting over London, so maybe a fully detailed London has been put on hold like many other things, ie-

New Clouds

Weather system

DCG (Dynamic Campaign Generator)

Spitfire Pilot position

etc..

Who would have thought that this fantastic sim would have a totally stupid looking Spitfire pilot and no DCG?

As this game has now been renamed 'Cliffs Of Dover' prehaps the included campaigns will only have coastal/sea action?

We will find out very soon!!

Its explain why the game is not called Battle of Britain, and instead Cliffs of Dover.
You are able to fly and fight one in front the Cliffs. :)

I think London is going to be a no fly zone no matter what PC you have, thats most likely the reason the devs seem to be avoiding showing any video footage of it, with the emphasis of the game slowly moving away from the Battle of Britian to more early channel skirmishes I very much doubt that bombing London will even be in the luftwaffe campaign due to the FPS drop.

Defender
03-07-2011, 09:20 PM
^^ That may be the case in the beta stage prior to really optimizing everything. DCS A-10C had crap FPS for me during the initial betas and the released version is a night and day comparison.

Who knows though, we'll find out soon enough.

you flew missions over the Berlin on the IL2 Berlin map, lets say 2002-2003 ?

i can remember building missions for the VOW onlinewar, the city was a "no go" for us missionbuilders in the campaigns :D
it took some years, nowaday its almost no proplem anymore.
i expect the same development for London in CoD , it will took some years till we can fly missions without proplems over the city :)

but true, we will see soon.

I heard from a friend who has a cousin whose best friend's boyfriend's father works for Ubi that, due to performance issues, all missions in CoD will be air-starts over the Channel. The only terrain modeled will be the Cliffs of Dover. Plans are also in place to add the coast of France, 'if time and resources allow,' sometime in the next year.

But they are making all their videos with the 3d video rendering tool remember, so by your own logic your logic is flawed.

Even if flying low over London would slow things down, bomber formations would fly above 20.000 ft. At that altitude things are probably optimized enough for playable framerates. Most battles where flown East and South East of London and over the Channel. Anyway, just thinking out loud. In a few weeks we'll know for sure.

I played Il2 mostly in the QMB for the first few years. Four vs Four, preferably over water. The fact that it was light years ahead of it's time and looked stunning, made it worth it. Did a lot of wonder woman view as well, just to keep the fps up. If I have to do this for CoD for a while I'll still enjoy it for the same reasons I enjoyed Il2.

According to the developer there are options to alleviate fps issues while flying over London.
