I'm new to IL-2 but I'm progressing well through the campaign and don't find it particularly challenging shooting down too many AI. SO I thought I try online and it seems to me that only the elite are playing (even on Arcade which is my preferred difficulty) and I'm getting hammered and bored. If there are any other amateurs out there on PSN please say as I'd like to play with some players of my caliber (particularly on Strike or CTA as I haven't really tried these out).

I'm sorry if I've caused misunderstanding...
I'm an amateur and am trying to find other people who are fairly new to the game and a bit rubbish like me...

You might consider joining a squad to help cover you assets while in the learning process. Just a thought.

no they wont flame you continually. what they will do is do "free flights" with you. they will fly around WITH you....maybe play follow the leader to let you get comfortable learning the controls. someone may take you under their wing and mentor you....if you want to learn what they know...ask. they may let you take pot shots at THEM to give you a feel for deflection shooting....may let you try out the different ac to see what you are most comfortable in. then they may dogfight you and go easy not going for the throat. the simple fact of the matter is...we were all there. you are going to get eaten alive and take your lumps for a little while. then you are going to see your kill/death ratio change...then someone new is going to come to the game...and you get to explain it all to them. you dont want to learn with someone who doesnt know how to fly or fight...you want to fly and learn off those that do. only way you are going to get better and good at this.

Okay, thank you everyonefor offering help then.
Will finish off single player first before deciding whether there are enough people online to warrant me getting better.

Yo pilot. Welcome to a great game, a great forum and a bunch of awesome guys.
One of the ways we are learning and gradually building up skills to meet and kill these aces is by beeing hammered, battered, humiliated, chewed up and sent burning or spinning to the ground. Then we deal with the feeling of not being the Born Ace we all think we are, and respawn to get in there again, and again, and again...
Another way to learn and bulid skills to master the planes is to go for free-flights with a bunch of other BoP'ers just like bobby says. That way u can follow the leader, fly formations, dick around, have a beer and a chat - and certainly a good laugh. That's the way most of us learned how to keep the crates airborn - and in time kill a few opponents. It's about patience and dealing with being a clobber in my opinion. Among other things we did was to arrange air-races, historic missions, pure flying with just chatting, laughing, smoking and doing all kind of silly stuff with the planes, stick&pad.
If you really want to meet and fly with the nice lovers of this game you go realistic or sim. (There is a few of them in arcade to, but recently they have been too busy learning how to ride cars).
I made my own prescreption when i tried to mingle with the aces; Forget about how 2 win. Remember how 2 have fun. Then you might win a few 2.

Well I'm getting better. 1 kill to 9 deaths in a team battle and I almost got another guy but a teammate killed him and then he left.
I also got 2 kills in a CTA and one of those wasn't when they were on the ground.
I'm still getting hammered but I'm now fighting back.

I too just started playing this game and would like to meet up with a few newer players or those experienced players willing to help someone learn to get better.
I play on the PS3, and my user name is on the Trophy Card. Feel free to add me and put: IL2 in the subject line so I know who you are.

That would be awesome to meet up with a few others!
I am in California, Pacific Time Zone, and can be found online usually from 9:00pm - 3am PST (yeah, I am a late-night gamer).
Although I prefer gaming late at night, if someone wants to hook up earlier, just let me know. I am fortunate to be retired and have a open schedule; but have always preferred gaming late at night.
wade, you have come to a good place....welcome.
Thank you for the welcome and it does indeed seem like a nice place.
