While you can't take the free units out of the tower, you *can* fight keepers to upgrade items in the tower with the free units. The items stay upgraded when you leave.

A probable bug -- upgrading should be disabled in the tower!

The great entity within the tower might have mastered life and death, space and time, but the devil's in the details, it would seem. :-P
