Well - in my mage impossible game (unless I missed something obvious) no canoners loaded. No you might not like canoners but they are a key ingredient to black knights :(

Pity a scroll won't load them :(

Meshmere also makes Black Knights out of Foremen, so you can check if you have some available. It's 1:1 and in addition to that, foremen are cheaper than cannoneers (600 vs 800 gold if I recall correctly).

Also can be made from alchemists, can't they?

vaguely I thought I needed 1 canoner to complete the quest so he would make dark knight from foremen.

Ah, yes, you're right. If there are no cannoneers to be found, you are indeed unlucky. Have you tried checking with the KB scanner?

never used kb scanner; always thought it was a bit er dishonest but maybe I will give it a try near the end - only have 4 more things left; island of demons, island of lizards and gremlin tower. Usually one dwarf stack pops in reha so maybe I will find some there; if not I might try the scanner before doing the gremlins.

Using the KB scanner might be considered "dishonest" if it's done at the beginning of the game to discover what artifacts, etc the game holds, but even then I wouldn't consider it dishonest as it is mostly used by players who have mastered the game on the highest difficulty and are looking for additional challenges so they want to see if what they need is present in the new game.
In any case, I don't see how it could be viewed as dishonest in your case, mid-game, where you would be overcoming one of the game's shortcomings - no concise list of what the shops you've visited offer (hear that, Katauri?).

Two things:
1) I think KB scanner is perfectly reasonable as a way to see if you missed a spell/unit/item that was there. Just removes the hassle of running around re-checking all the shops.
2) Next KB game will be 9001 times better if when you have an interface to see all shops you've visited, and the items available at each
Ooh, or maybe a 'dimensional salesman' that you can 'use' and he'll let you activate a shop remotely. The screen for it would come up just as if you were standing there? Maybe we could re-use Lews Therin again?

Well to be honest I think part of the game is discovery aspect. I suppose a concise summary of what you've seen would be within this framework. Anyways no cannoners in land of the demons; so only one island left :(
Ok I broke down and cheated; one stack did load. I goofed bad; I had to tell him (linkage factory) I was sent there after completing that last quest (driller) to see the cannoner. That's why i couldn't find them. Ok so one stack does load this game and i'm a cheater :(
On the inverse side of things time back did not load. It shows up in the scan at one location but that shop does not actually have it (not sure how this is possible). Hum. Conversely I'm down to three fights (gremlin, nasty in reha, and final fight) so I'm not sure I actually missed the spell.

That's odd, considering how many places there are on the two dwarven continents where you can recruit dwarves, I always found all unit types in abundance. I had more troubles with Lizardmen, who are only available on Reha and in a few shops only. Only two places sold Gorguls and that got out of stock soon...

Yea it was a sad game; playing mage and time back did not load and canoner were only visible after doing that quest that provides the special weapon (which is why i missed them - they were the only stack in the game). In my current impossible paladin game there is something like 8 stacks of them. In fact I was able to complete this very quest by level 20. Compared to the mage game this game has been very rich (though I have to admit it is weak in royal griffons (only one stack of a 100; where as the mage game had something like 4 stacks for a total of 800)
