I got the saitek AV8R online for like $39 all told

http://www.buy.com/prod/mad-catz-aviator-stick-for-xbox-360-and-pc/q/loc/101/210876845.html

I like it. easy to work...rudder with a twist of the stick... throttle placement is ok. i sit on the floor and prop it up between my knees and have at it. closest thing to real flying...if they could just figure out how to make you feel G-force...haha

Does a joystick make it alittle easier to fly in realistic/sim mode?

Definetly. It has a small deadzone which is quite annoying but thats the xbox rather than the game. The only thing really about the sticks is that the wheel brakes don't work when you land.

I cant do flight with a regular controller....frustrates the heck out of me. That is why I didnt play any flight combat for years...til i got this stick. I love it. You have so much more control....do adjust the sensitivity down in your settings for the game. I have mine back to where the maneuvers are pretty close to realistic and luckily the game seems to compensate by adjusting the opponents by the same. As for the brakes. Seems to me pulling the stick all the way back after you have bled off some ground speed seems to act as brakes. pulling elevator on a real plane doesnt cause that much drag to slow you as fast as in the game.

i was able to pic up the 2 piece ace edge flight control for $30. The guy selling it had bought it, then never even really used it. Its in about 95% condition. nice set up 4sure

if you can pick one of those up at that price...DO. but in the event you cant...or are too impatient to wait for one to show up cheap like me ( there are missions to fly and i dont want to be grounded!!!) get the saitek...trust me...you will flying with a stick and throttle..... second best feeling in the world!

I might have to get a stick for this game.Being incredibly ignorant of airplanes, I wonder if most of the original planes used pedals for rudder control, and how having a hands free rudder control would improve performance in the game.

yeah the original planes ( as do most ) used pedals for rudder and brakes. it would be great to have petals but on the AV8R the rudder is in the grip itself. i found that was pretty easy to adjust to just a little twist gives you what you need and in a dog fight a little rudder is all you need to put the boogie in your line of fire. i got extremely frustrated with a game pad...a stick makes a world of difference...well worth it.
