***official deathmatch thread***

Welcome to Deathmatch! A competition to determine the best dogfighter in Birds of Prey. Pilots will choose between the LA5 or 7, Spifire, BF109, hurricaine, or YAK3 and do battle with it for the honor to be called the best. I salute you all!!!

Rules:
1. Pick your fighter. Once your final pick is in, you cannot change.

2. Maximize points. As many as you can, any way you can. Nothing is illegal.

3. Pilots compete against the others in their plane types. Head to head will mean nothing till the final round.

4. Pilots not showing up will forfeit. A replacement pilot will fly in any heat in this case in that pilots plane.

5. Join errors will be dealt with in the usual way.

6. Pilots who quit will be shamed. Everyone will know you quit. You signed up knowing the score. See it through.

7. Disconnects will be handled as they happen. I don't anticipate this being a problem.

8. Ties will be broken by deaths. The least wins. If still tied, a 10 minute landing contest in CAT.

9. Round 1: 11 heats 6 planes per heat 20 minutes. We have 32 pilots. Each pilot will fight 2 battles. Your lowest score will be tossed. This maximizes our fun and allows all pilots a fighting chance to get to the next round. Saturday the 20th.

10. Round 2: 3 heats 6 planes per heat 20 minutes. Top scorers from round 1. 6 Spits, 6 109s, 6 LA5/7/Hurri/YAK3

11. Semifinal: 2 heats 6 planes per heat20 minutes. Top scores from round 2. Sunday

12. Wildcard: 1 heat, 6 planes, losers from semifinals. 20 minutes. Winner is in the final regardless of plane type.

13. Final: 1 heat, 7 planes, 30 minutes. Winner gets all the pennies. Sunday

Special awards:

1. Best dogfighter in BOP: winning plane
2. Ace of aces: winning pilot
3. Record: best score of any heat
4. Top Guns: winners of the heats
5. Captains: round 2 pilots
6. Colonels: semifinal pilots
7. Generals: Final pilots
8. Poor sport: Do not flame your fellow pilots. Anything is legal that the game allows. Everyone will give it their best and we will respect that. Blaming no credit, kill steal, intentional crashing, rockets, wheels down is an excuse. We all have those options. I understand emotional outbursts. Fine. But, DO NOT FLAME YOUR FELLOW PILOTS! Please do not make me hand out this award.

I need to know your final plane selection and the times you can fight this Saturday, your time. I am working on the schedule now. I will adjust it as I need to as the time approaches. NOTIFY ME IMMEDIATELY IF YOU HAVE TO CHANGE TIME!!! I will try my best to get us all there. ****I NEED THIS INFORMATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE****

I need to clarify things. The object of this competition is to find the best 7 pilots in the best fighter aircraft this game offers in a 30 minute deathmatch. I will not get the best 7 in head to head competition. I am seeding the heats by leaderboard standings, personal experience, and reputations. Do not worry about who is in your heat. SCORE! DEFEAT THE ENEMY! Even the best will have their hands full with 5 snarling dogs on there ass. The last 7 standing will have had to fight their way through hoards of savage beasts. I fully expect new stars to arise and old foes will be defeated. SCORE! DEFEAT THE ENEMY AT ALL COSTS!!!

So all Spits, all 109s, and all LAs are grouped together. Hurricaines and Yaks are grouped with the LAs. There will be at least 2 of each type in every heat. Three heats will take place in round 2. The top 6 pilots by score in each type move on to round 2. YOUR COMPETITION IS THE PILOTS IN YOUR PLANE TYPE. THEY ARE IN THE OTHER HEATS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE 1 IN YOUR HEAT. Everybody got it?

12 spits. 10 109s. 6 LAs. 3 Hurricanes. 1 Yak3. Precisely as the poll showed! 4 pilots dropped out.

Filler pilots: ARkozz, SubaruGaz, gordonvembu, Bunny287 volunteered to fly in assigned planes in the first round heats for competition sake. They cannot advance. They can, however, win top gun.

Replacement pilots: If a pilot does not show up, I will ask any pilot in the competition who is online at the time to come take that pilots plane and compete for competition sake. He cannot advance. However, he can win top gun.

Here is the schedule. Heat times, written next to "Heat", are all US CENTRAL TIME. That is my time. The time written next to your name is YOUR TIME in your house on your clock.

All pilots check to make sure I am right! DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE OUR TIMES ARE CORRECT! Do not fail or I'm screwed!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm very tired and losing sleep. My wife is tolerating it OK. It is very difficult, but I am so excited I can hardly concentrate at work! It will all be worth it. I believe some of the finest pilots in the game have signed on and it ought to be one hell of a slugfest!!!!!

I will assign you to the LA's. I would go with all English with the Spit but there are twice as many Spits as the other two. So far, the LAs are getting the short end. So that's where you will go. I have to warn you, though. You'll have to beat me!!!!!!!

Heat 7 is your filler slot, so far kozz. Your slot is marked "filler pilot". I need you to fly the g6 and not the yak3 to even up the planes in the heat. I changed up the secondary pilots to filler pilots in the rules. All the plane catagories are well represented so you won't move on from the first round as a filler pilot. Your job is to "fill up" the heat with 6 planes and give the other 5 boys competition. If you win the match, you are eligable for a top gun award, but you will not move on from heat 7.

Your 2 primary heats are 10 and 11. Those count!!!!!

The second round starts Sunday at 1pm us central time. That is 11am pacific, 12 pm mountain, 2pm eastern, 7pm Europe. I will post the heats immediately after the first round ends saturday night. Plenty of time to rest, especially me! It is your responsibilty to check this page for results and heat times for Sunday. I will send a PS3 message to round 2 pilots Saturday night. That's all I can do. The tournament will not stop Sunday till it is finished!!!!! Plan for it. All deserving pilots should make every effort to see it through Sunday. A true champion must be crowned, both plane and pilot.

Thanks guys. This BS with the Sony servers is aweful. It has to be the servers, right? We cant here each other even in a small room. The lag sucks. I had to restart one of the heats because of that. That last match took about 30 minutes to get off because of join errors.

And I had no idea that the highest you can set the kills in dogfight is 100. There is no unlimited selection. Nobody knew this. Mergirvin got 100 points with 1:30 to go and won the game. Damn that! We'll never know how many he can get. That guy is good! And a good guy, too. And the other guys in the heat lost 1:30 of scoring. I really felt like shit over that, but what can we do? It hit the game limits. The show had to go on. That 3rd heat was awesome!!

The leaders did really well.
Several guys had their best scores ever. Thanks so much to the guys available as replacement pilots. Their scores only count toward Top Gun, nothing else. With the number of no shows, we would not have had 6 pilots in every heat. But we managed to do so. SNOWOLF-7 came out of nowhere. He had a simply outstanding night. As Bunny287 also had his best going on. krsansic was excellent in the g6, nailing 2 Top Guns along with SNOWOLF. And SINNSR! And Watermanr7 basking in that Hawaiian sun! And killerhawk had his top game ever. They came out of nowhere also. All these guys brought their A game.

I think lots of guys were nervous. I sure was. The pressure of competition! Lots of disappointed players, but that's the way it goes. The cool, calm guys did the best. This thing is wide open for the taking. I think tomorrow we'll see some really good scores.

I wish it was the Sony servers. That would mean we had dedicated server support instead of crappy old p2p. The two heats I played were quite laggy. Not overly so, but it's that really irritating line where you just get a bead on the target and he warps a few feet, rinse and repeat.

Last game had a whole boatload of crashbugs on both ends for me too. Still, it was fun, apart from all those Spits zipping about! :grin:

A good night!! As you guys can see by the scores, the aces were scoring. Tagem was on the mark as was ARkozz, both of whom had 2 TOP GUNS. Unfortunately kozz cannot make the 2nd round. That damn job just gets in the way of everything! Dinho, WhiteRhino (barely missing his 2nd TOP GUN by 1 death), and cep34 were smokin! They are going to be very difficult to knock out! Olife showed up too and made it to the second round. Rookies McKinneyJD and R3ECKON1NG_FORCE played excellent and both are in the 2nd round. Great job and a successful first round to everyone who held up their commitment and gave it their best shot. You are all number 1!!!

I guess you guys must have scared the shit out of several pilots who never showed up. With the exception of skeii and Olife who were dealing with family matters (and both of them made the 2nd round), everybody else didn't even bother to cancel (except SubaruGaz, who happily enjoyed several rounds of AvsP right in front of everybody). edal86 re-retired. Still haven't heard from them. haitch40 caved in (sorry buddy, you did), but he showed up and held up his end anyway. Better than I can say for the rest.

I busted my ass and to have guys just not show up is disappointing.

Tomorrow should be very good if everyone shows. These guys advanced fair and square, although the LA/Hurri/YAK catagory got the biggest impact by the noshows. A pity, but it is what it is.

Those of you who didn't make it, and everyone as soon as this is wrapped up, check the prototype team ladder rules. It's about ready to start as soon as this is done. Keep in mind it's designed for a completely different style of flying, like the earlier tournaments it's least deaths instead of most kills. Then form up teams and prepare for glory

OK. I just witnessed the most awesome match ever. I can't believe SNOWOLF hit 100 points in that damn Hurricaine. Against Dinho and WhiteRhino no less.
I'm swear I'm in shock right now. My hands are shaking! I'm 2 hours late and upset the entire tournament. I was ready to just give up. Then I get home and throw this match together on the fly. I really thought it was game over. No joke. These guys are patient and telling me everythings cool man, calm down and don't worry about it. So we start the match.

I'm flyin overhead in my A20. Feelin really, really defeated at this point. The scoring starts. SNOWOLF led the entire match. For the first 5 minutes he was walkin away with it. I was like, no way, he's getting lucky. But he kept scoring. Dinho and WhiteRhino really started picking it up and, neck and neck, began closing the gap to SNOWOLF. With 12 minutes to go it was 55, 48, 47. No shit.
My fuckin mic breaking up as usual. I still didn't think about the 100 mark. At the halfway point, it was still neck and neck, with SNOWOLF satrting to open a lead again. I stated on the mic "the game limit is 100 guys, it will end if someone hits it". That was it. SNOWOLF took off. 80 points, 85, 83 81, 86, 91 and I'm saying "SNOWOLF has 90 points!" Dinho and WhiteRhino hit at least 10-15 points apiece the last minute of the game. At 2:30 left in the match SNOWOLF hit it. 100. New record. He kicked ass!!!!!!!!!!! I aint takin that away. Fanfuckintastic.

I'm on central time as well, but I can't make 12 unless it's tonight, friday, or a weekend. Damn that job and all. I'm usually on 6-10 weekdays and am available most weekends at any time until beach season rolls around. Thanks for all the hard work Lost.
