the p47 is one of the best planes in the game if you use it correctly
dont be fooled into thinking its good at dogfights its not but it wasnt designed for that it was designed as an interceptor it was designed to take on enemy bombers and leave p51s to deal with the 109's
i have a little table here showing each class of plane
air supieriority fighters split into 2 catogories bnz eg 109 and tnb eg spit
interceptors designed to take out bombers eg me262 m163 p47 and the il2 is prety good at this too
strike planes/ dive bombers eg ju87 il2
light /medium bombers eg a20g blenheim
heavy bombers eg b17g masive payload and lots of protection

the P47 (if modelled accuratly after patch) shouldnt be to good at dogfighting, but will get you kills if flown right.
Someone on your 6? then dive! the jug did this extremely well!! it can get away from anything in a dive. Turning wont help to much.
You have enough firepower to take an enemy fighter down quickly, so shouldnt have to dogfight long. Just hit and run. That quick short burst on him before he even knew you were their should of been enough to cripple him.
In strike i find this plane to perform best. Its fast and has a great array of weapons. Get in hit the target and get out.

ahh but you havent got the speed to do hit n runs
the p47 is great though i can take out 3 b17s with the same p47 whilst sitting on there six and reciving loads of fire

Sorry my fault i didnt explain well enough :( it was assuming you had height over your enemy. Dive down on him and get the bullets into him, this is where your speed comes from. :D

true but if your going to have a height advantage then you need to climb so if you dont do it in 1 pass ur stuffed

Which is why you make sure your shots count :P ;)
Joking aside -
The P47 wasnt all that bad in a climb, sure the earlier models were which is why to evade the luftwaffe used to go into a steep climb, but as the later models came out (this game depicts a D) they had a fairly good rate of climb, and a superb roll rate. And above 30,000ft they were quite nimble :D
though they were not the dogfighter - the P51 was around for that. This "jug" was good at ground attack, thats where she belongs :D
its what i use her for.

I unlocked it by giving the playstation store $9.99
The DLC came with the Jug, and a few more single play missions. I love the plane, but the lack of missions for it is a bummer. This game would be a gold mine if it had a simple mission editor. Anyways.......
I think only pre-orders received the Jug for free.

You know Ive never had a proper dogfight at 30,000 ft in this game, not even in training. I will have to try it sometime, the P47 could be the best plane at that hight in this game and only a few people would ever know it.

I don't know. It just has too large a turning radius. Every time I try to pull it tighter, slowing down or using a little rudder, it stalls violently. In a straight line, it isn't any faster than the best fighters. Diving and trying to get lead in a target is damn hard. Congrats if you can do it consistetly. I keep trying this plane and the 51 in practise hoping to find some trick or something that would get my American fighters into the combat hunt. False hope so far. They just won't turn in sharp enough and that stalling is a bitch. Maybe the blackouts will help these two become more effective in anything other than strike, which hardly anybody is playing in sim.

Whoa what DLC? I thought we were waiting on this??? I know the patch is out and yes after my next mission I unlocked a bunch of stuff but not P-47. Do I have to go to the PS store? Are the German cockpits there?

Yup what you're looking for is at the PS store! I'm debating if getting the P-47 and a few extra missions is worth $9.99 myself...

pretty uncommon for two fighters to stop and dogfight at 30,000 feet - those that can even fly that high, that is... unless there's bombers around
I don't call p51 a dogfighter, but enough about that... the p47 had vicious machine guns, but was the heaviest world war 2 fighter built by the US, its wing loading was over 50 lbs/square foot with a full tank, and its range was too short for it to be effective for US objectives which were mainly: send bombers long distances and protect them with escorts, and find tanks and blow them up. So they were glad to replace it with the p51 for those reasons.
There were other American planes that were much better at dogfighting. Considering BOP is designed for low-altitude and short-range fights, with the average lifespan of a plane about 1 minute, it woulda been better to have the p-39 and p-40. They had weak engines but they were great fighters. The p-63 had a good engine and was a great fighter.
I was just testing some planes against bombers in training, the 109k, 190 and la7, using both bnz and weave tactics. The german planes were better at the weave, though only the 190 could attack up and down without falling into the gunners cone. The la7 was immortal at bnz, and torn to ribbons at weaving. Its cannons aren't powerful enough to kill the plane before the gunner gets lucky.

I hear ya!!!! A p63 and p40, maybe the p39 in early 40's battles, would be absolutely awesome!!!! I am hoping they are in a dlc soon. They gotta give me an American plane to get in there with.

That's been my experience, too.
I don't even try the Stang online, but I've taken the Jug up several times. It doesn't seem to have the speed it should - should be able to hit 300-400mph in level flight at low to mid altitude, more like 450mph up high. I don't recall seeing close to those numbers without standing on the WEP, or nosing over into a dive. And, the dives aren't all that impressive. Story was, if you wanted to climb a Jug up from 20K to 30K, the fastest way was to dive to 15K, then zoom up to 30K. Roll rate was reportedly very good in the Jug, but it only seems average in game - probably worse than the 109 and Spit (the non-clipped wing Spits could be out-rolled by a P-47). Turn fight, forget it. I don't think the Jug ought to be able to out-corner many of its opponents, but it ought to be more competitive than it is. Your best bet to get a kill is to head out from the fight a couple miles, turn around and come diving in on somebody who is distracted and flying a relatively straight path. Most of the time, your superior armor is what you'll be using as some asshole in a Spit or 109 sits in your six and chews your tail.
Very disappointing to have the Jug there, but be so under-represented. Maybe they modeled an extra fuel tank there...and forgot it had a turbocharger...and a PW R-2800...and ailerons/elevators. At least the Stang is getting fixed. Don't know about the Jug.
Only had one high altitude fight in a training mission. Took a Spit IX against a 262. Fight started a 30,000' and ended after about five minutes around 15,000' after I finally got the corner on him. I seemed to be just hanging on the blades up at 30,000' while the 262 could've engaged and disengaged at will if the computer wasn't flying it in big loops. The Jug ought to be able to show her stuff up at that height, but I wonder if the game will reflect that.

Im not a huge fan of egon meyer!!
it was clear to him that the P47 was in a bad way from the minute he got on its six and it didnt try to evade. Even then after a few bursts when he pulls up on his wing...he can clearly see the damage thats inflicted, yet he still goes around for another 2 passes.
I know its war but you have to show some compasion to stop you becomnig a complete animal. And to shoot at a pretty defenceless aircraft must be great for that nazi morale. Was quite disgusted by it actually.
ironic that meyer was shot down and killed by a P47! thats karma.

That P-47 video you posted was the entire reson I bought BOP lol... I really wanted to fly the JUG after seeing this. I *almost* bought the DLC immediately, but I wanted to wait to see how the developers made her fly in this game. Sadly, it appears they didn't make the JUG perform like it should, so I'm not paying $9.99 more for it.
Good thing I like a few of the other planes though! I just wish I could be a proper JUG pilot.

I can understand where you are coming from, but, Meyer may have been thinking, if i kill this pilot, he won't be able to shoot down anymore german planes.
I imagine that replacing pilots is alot harder than replacing planes.
Plus, it is war, Meyer may have lost a great deal of friends to the Americans. His heart could of been filled with revenge. We were not there, so it is almost impossible to speculate.

He's a leader of men, should set an example to others, no matter what his personnal opinions are etc. Its just ruthless.
I can though see your side of the arguement, which is fair..... Which is why if that was true, he could of show SOME compassion and just shot the P47 down, not flown along side him to let the poor guy know he was going to kill him. Thats just plain sick. No ifs or buts.... its twisted.

I see him as a man who was dedicated to shooting down enemy planes but also had respect for the pilots who's planes he shot at. I think its clear that he didn't want to kill Johnson (he could easily have shot at the cockpit from ubove). Waving to and finaly saluting Johnson after his ammo ran out isn't something an angry, revengeful person would do.
Also he could have been each time he came alongside Johnson, giving him the chance to bail out (he didn't know he was trapped)

The pilots were much more valuable to both sides than the planes were. Even the best German aces were shot down numerous times.
During the Battle of Britain, Göring wanted the Luftwaffe to shoot pilots who had already bailed out. Many of them wouldn't do it.
If you have an ace pinned down, it is wiser to kill them before they can bail, or they'll just get another plane and do more damage than 10 average pilots.

Moral issues aside, it makes more sense to kill the guy trying to kill you rather than let him away to try again tomorrow.

Erich Rudorffer was shot down 16 times including 9 bailouts. He ultimately racked up over 200 kills to become the #7 all-time fighter ace, even considering the different scoring systems used by Germany and other countries. No doubt the Soviets would have killed him if they could, instead of just shooting him down. He's still alive.
Günther Rall, who was the highest-scoring living ace till he died 2 months ago, was shot down 8 times and finally retired from combat when his thumb was shot off by a p-47 pilot. Though he had downed 2 p47's first. But he was returned to combat later even without his thumb. Wounding him wasn't good enough.
Adolf Galland was shot down early in his career over the English Channel but was rescued and would claim 55 spitfires and become chief of the Luftwaffe's fighter wing.

yeh its true that pilots are more valuble than planes but i have this therory if it comes to a war of attrition
if its over your teratory let him bail take him prisoner prisoners are worth more than kills
if its over enemy teretory kill him so he cant go up again.
however i couldent bring myself to kill a person whether it was for my country, my family or anything pluss what comes around goes around if you let him go you may be shot down and let go rather than killed

Makes me think about buying it also. Being one of the only people who regularly flys the pre-patch P-51D online, it would be nice to fly the plane that the cockpit is actually ment for. I'd probably use it quite a bit in dogfights on sim for its quick roll and dive.

yeh its aq good plane
the things i like most about it are its not too bad at turning it can take an endless amount off 303 fire alot of 50 fire and quite a bit of cannon but its better at taking machine gun fire than cannon fire. and i know cannons are more powefull but 1 solid hit on a wing from an la7 and ur going down although not as fast as other planes would.
also i love its guns very accurate lots of ammo and alot of dammage

If you could be so kind, let us know how fast the plane is... it's a big jug but then it's got that huge engine plus I believe the JUG had some sort of turbo... to be specific, how fast is it at around 100 meters (basically on the deck) with full WEP in kph? No rush... thanks!

P-47 does 560 kph with WEP and at level flight (without bombs and/or rockets). It is a flying tank hard to take out. Did I mention that it is easy on the eye? lol :)
Does not roll like the FW's more like the Hurricane I would say
