It's never comfortable seeing pictures (or video) when you know that real people probably died in them...

This is true, but its normal for people to actually be interested in them. They show it on the History and Military channel all the time.

They had a whole "WW2 In HD" series recently that was a huge hit. It is upsetting, but we have to remember that it has already happened. Its upsetting, but not to the pont where i cannot look at them at all.

Just think about all the people that viewed the 9-11 footage over and over.

I am not arguing with you by any means, im just saying these pics are nothing new to me and millions of others. And I do agree with what you said.

And I agree with you 100% - there is an oddly morbid curiosity in us all. Like how many people rubber neck when they see flashing lights on the motorway?

But to bury our head in the sand and ignore things like this is kind of disrespectful, and we won't learn anything from it. But by the same token, I think media has made us slightly de-sensitised to the horror of them. Especially when it is just pictures of destroyed machinery - it becomes easier to forget or block out the fact that there are people inside the machine. It would be harder if there were pictures of a pilot burnt to death or hit in the head by a cannon round, and I think the reaction would be stronger. It's a strange thing...

I'm not critising this thread, any of the guys posting in it or the pictures. I just guess we have to remember that the pictures depict horrific things, and are not just "cool".

Seeing those pics brings two words to mind..

F**k that...

I don't think I could have done it. It makes you realise how scary it must have been seeing stuff like that on a daily basis.

At least in IL-2 nobody ever dies! Amazing how they all always get out AND the chute opens..

Ever seen those films where the 'chute opens and gets ripped off the back of the poor guy bailing out? Talk about having a bad day...

If I was in WW2 I think I would much prefer to be a pilot over a foot soldier or in a tank.

I think it would seem to me that in a combat zone, any sense of control would be primarily an illusion. It all seems quite random. Obviously I've not been in such a situation and am just going off BoP and OpFP: DR experience. Maybe Gunny could contribute an opinion more grounded in reality...?

But I know what you're saying - I would like to feel as much in control of my fate as possible.

Not Exactly true there, mate. I have shot down several Bombers/ Fighters and was shot down several times my self, were the Aircraft just simply fell down to mother Earth with out Parachutes. wich means that the crew have been killed. You can let your crew Bail out in moments like these by hittin' start and select ''Bail out''. Then your crew gets out the plane.

Is there a "f**k the crew, I'm outta here" button too? I'd use that.

If I was in WW2 I think I would much prefer to be a pilot over a foot soldier or in a tank.

Lets take a Tank for example: as a tank Expert and Historian, I know and have Records of Several M4 Sherman Crews who actually Bailed out in whats know in Tank Bissniss as ''The Exit to Hell''

The Emergency Exits on the M4 sherman ( I beleive all versions of it) are:
Driver: Drivers Hatch witch is the same size as your midle waist.
Co-Driver: Same kind of Hatch as Driver
Comander: that Lucky B*sterd got to open up the Hatch and Jump out and Roll of the Tank.
Gunner: Actually Had to Wait after the Commander had left, or if the Commander is Killed, Push the Commander out, so that the Gunner could leave the tank.
Now, Loader: All in all, it is the Loader who has the ''Best'' way of Leaving the Tank, on the Loaders possition in the M4 Sherman, the Loader actually stands on-top of his Excape Hatch. It is an emgency door inside the Shermans Floor.

I've spoken to meny Sherman' crew and they still coulden't beleive that someone who had to be the size of a lepracon could leave the tank trough a Hatch that small.

Did you knew why the Germans actually called the Sherman tank the ''Ronson'' or ''TommieCooker'' ? Because the Crew of a Sherman had only 10 to 12 SECONDS to Bail out the Tank! Later variants of Shermans gave the crew 16 SECONDS to bail out because of their Wet ammo Storage.

So it seems that the Sherman Litteratly earns it name for ''Ronson''
'Cause it allway's Lights!
