Other than plummeting into the deck or the odd barrel roll. What tricks or manouverers can i use to shake a bogey. To date i have dropped the throttle and been overtaken but i need a few manouvers to pull out of the hat and other times ive made myself more of a target by climbing?

I have the same problems, it is often very hard to shake enemys off, esp. if they are veteran pilots. Climbing is a sure death against good players.
As a chaser i just have to pull my nose up and have a big area to hit since the enemy plane is climbing up the sky.
Barrell rolls are also not effective, when enemys start barrell rolling i usually never follow but stay up and wait till they start crossing my FOV again. (And they mostly do).
On Sim Mode i try to use the terrain to shake enemys off, flying very low over dark areas and NOT climbing up again.
Its kind of weird since many dogfights take place so damn low, but if you gain altitude you are so easy to spot.
So i stay loooow and hope to distract my follower so he looses me.
If it comes to a turn fight, i do the same thing as you do, zero the throttle and hope the enemy shoots past me. (Only works with rookie pilots).
Vets shoot your arse up for sure.

To sum it up: Watch your six ALL the time, if you have a good player on your six you are doomed. (I know, since i get my arse handed to me very often :-P)
And since i don´t use good turn fighters i need speed and the terrain to get the sucker off my back.

Nearly impossible to lose someone in Realistic. The arrows kind of help. In my experience barrel rolls are actually quite useful, especially if you get out of them in a turn. Like the poster above said, he usually doesn't follow, so if you start out level and leave the roll in a turn to the right (i.e. make 1.25 roll) it might be too fast for him.

Nurf, what plane do you fly and which plane do you find shooting you down the most?

I'm still saving up for my PS3, so I don't actually know how realistic compares to sim mode in terms of flight dynamics.

From what I've read and played in IL-2:1946 (which isn't much :-P), I may be able to help you out. So, if you're playing on sim, maybe I know a thing or two.

dropping off the throttle can help.

try doing a split S or pulling a loop.

in "dogfight" its every man for himself so if someone is on your 6 then the best thing to do is probably make peace with god....your gonig to be seeing him soon.

In "team battle" things are much easier, the BEST thing (i find) is to have a wingman. A good one helps :D

For example....

i fly the spit IX online (the XVI is good but not as good as the IX in a turn) and the majority of the time in team battle were up against 109's. So, our strong point is the turn.

Get someone on my 6 then i'll pull a tight turn, and keep it going, lowering speed helps because it tightens my turn and a rookie 109 pilot will try the same but wont be able to keep up, While he's to busy with me and trying to keep turning with me.... my wingman is now on his 6 and lining up an easy kill.

So from my point of view..best thing is a wingman. They have helped me out alot on this game and vice versa.

If no wingman...

then a mixture of everything you've been told above by the others :)

you will soon pick it up. It helps to know your aircraft though, know what its good at. And also know the weak spots of your enemy.

that's so true when someone is chasing me with no way to chake him out
=> It is really helpful the head towards a teammate (which is still difficult in SIM because you never know at first who is your friend)
So he can get onboard of the train. And save my ass

But Even if my teammate reveals finally to be another enemy I start turning like hell. And I hope that my chaser will get confused with the other plane.

Well I don't now if its really works but WHEN I've been the chaser, I 've been confused more than once by another plane and I've lost his track.

OR I killed the teamate of my first target instead.

So the tactics could be a bit vicious four your teamates....

EDIT: Well most of the time I get killed though

On sim mode it's good to break hard left or right and then dive in that direction. If your opponent is using the cockpit view you will be out of his line of sight for a short time giving you chance to get away etc. I really wish sim mode forced everyone to be in the cockpit though.

Anyone flying the german planes would have an advantage ;) lol.

Agree with you though about every flying cockpit view only. I love that view from my hurricane or spitfire, it adds more depth to the game and realism. Even more so when your oil tank has ben hit and your cockpit is covered in oil!! try to dogfight then lol.

The LA's have a great rear view from the cockpit too :) It looks cool when your shooting someone up and then your canopy gets plastered in oil. I find the game much more enjoyable from in the pit.

Yeah, the generic HUD/cockpit view is great for visibility, but poor for keeping oriented to your aircraft. No canopy or airframe visible to give you a cue as to what direction you're looking.

Can't wait for the 109 'pits.

LOL. Im a sucker for british aircraft and i guess if i could just have one choice id fly the Hurricane because its fast with a truckload of MG and i love their shape always have, you name it ive been shot down by it . Im doing all the missions in realistic and it does help but using the cockpit view is hard especially bombing.

HAWX does have an option where its pits only, but its still a far worse game than BOP. I am so glad it was one of the games I traded in for BOP.
