reminded me of saburo Sakai's book where he mentions flying a bomber escort and forgetting his altitude so when ge opened his fizzy drink it blew up and covered his cockpit in a film of sugar, I think that was the mission that he dived on some SBD and caught a bullet in the face. He was blinded in one eye and paralysed on his left side, still somehow managed to get home, very lucky.
