are the AI more "lethal" in single missions?

As for the fighters, they usually chase me for a while and fire some pot shots in my general direction. They then try to escape me, often only to spin out of control and crash.

A bug? Probably not.

I think the AI is pretty good actually, it's just not aggressive enough. Maybe it has something to do with the missions themselves. A level with a lot of fighters would probably be harder, I think.
